Ceramics Program - Office for the Arts at Harvard Registration for January 2010 offerings Mini-Courses 3-weeks : January 2 – January 23, 2010 BeginningIntermediate Basics and Challenges The construction, refinement, and glazing of wheel thrown and hand built forms will provide beginners with a strong foundation. Creative approaches to altered and combined elements will provide challenges for experienced students. 6 sessions Monday and Wednesday evenings, 6:30 – 9:30 pm or Tuesday and Thursday mornings, 9:30 am –12:30 pm Young 6 sessions IntermediateAdvanced 6 sessions 4 sessions 4 sessions Workshops Instructor: Wayne Fuerst Instructor: Stephanie Print Transfer Techniques on Clay Instructor: Kathy King Monday and Wednesday mornings, 9:30 am –12:30 pm Students will learn a variety of print transfer techniques on clay as a means of personal expression. Course experiences will include mono-printing, screening, stenciling, creating water-slide decals, embossing and relief printing onto plaster and clay. Historical and contemporary examples of these techniques will provide inspiration. Collaborative Tiles and Murals Instructor: Wasma’a Chorbachi Saturdays, 10 am – 1 pm, January 2, 9, 16, 23 Participate in the collaborative design and construction of a tile mural, and learn strategies for planning, creating, and installing tile murals in schools, community centers, or residences. Considerations include: site evaluation, permission/contract negotiations, developing themes and subject matter that allow for collaborative expression and inspiration, assessment of material and equipment requirements for fabrication, installation, and mounting. Moldmaking/Slip Casting in Four Easy Lessons Instructor: Forrest Snyder Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 6:30 – 9:30 pm January 12, 14, 19, 21 Using clay, plaster, and found objects, we’ll make molds and slip cast prototypes, multiples, and/or unique curiosities. We’ll go fast and get dirty and learn all about that gruesome word “undercut.” Techniques explored have wide applications for making molds and casting in other materials. Ceremonial Gifts and Commemorative Vessels Tuesday, January 19, 11 am – 1 pm, 2 – 5 pm Instructor: Miranda Thomas This workshop will include a demonstration, hands-on lettering class, and presentation on Miranda Thomas’s ceremonial and commemorative work for public and private events and clients, including the United Nations and the White House. Marketing by Yourself in the Digital Age Instructor: Kristen Kieffer Wednesday, January 13, 6 – 9 pm Direct marketing is essential for survival as an independent studio potter. Learn how Kristin Kieffer effectively uses her website, her blog, Facebook, and Etsy to publicize work, connect with fans, and sell online. Photographing Work Instructor: Christopher Adams Thursday, January 14, 6 – 9 pm Christopher Adams is a master of photographing ceramic vessels and sculpture. This workshop will include an introductory overview of photography basics and lighting/photography demonstrations with work from three representative workshop participants. Objects have an intimate and powerful presence in his photographs because his careful coordination of focal length and aperture provides a good depth of field for close-range shots and because his effective use of shadow provides dramatic three-dimensional information. Independent Study Studio Access Studio Party 7 days and evenings/week Independent study and studio access is available for a fee for all those enrolled in either the Fall ‘09 term or the Spring ‘10 term who have previously enrolled in a class. Clay All Night Producer: Caroline Lowe ‘12 January 29, Friday, 8:30 pm – 1 am Undergraduate Studio Party with clay, food, and music. Shuttle bus service every half hour from Holyoke Center (Mount Auburn Street side) to the Studio. No fee for undergraduates just attending the party and not saving their experiential creations. For a fee of $20 (which can be worked off by Clay All Night Party clean-up), those who wish to have their work glazed and fired may return to the studio for 1 – 3 scheduled instructional sessions.
