College of Natural and Health Sciences Curriculum Committee Minutes November 7, 2007 Present: Audrey Bopp, Sue Kent, Missy Parker, Steve Smith, Jenny Weber Richard Schwenz (provided feedback via email) Absent: Igor Szczyrba Guests: Ruwang Sung, Rob Reinsvold, Mary West-Smith The meeting was called to order by Jenny Weber. Minutes The minutes of the October 24 meeting were approved with minor revisions. PROPOSALS TO REVIEW SCI 532 Energy for Today and Tomorrow A re-review of a new course for Graduate Interdisciplinary Degree Program. MA K-12 Natural Science Teaching Emphasis Missy Parker/Jenny Weber moved to approve the course proposal with minor revisions in the course description for the catalog. Committee recommended approval by consensus. MA K-12 Natural Science Teaching Emphasis Program revision to better reflect the purpose of providing K-12 teachers with advanced study in science content, pedagogical knowledge and practice. Steve Smith/Audrey Bopp moved to approve the program proposal with the following revisions: name change to Natural Science K-12 Teaching Emphasis, remove a line from the catalog description of the program, re-add the comprehensive exam line, few minor typos. Committee recommended approval by consensus. SCED 562 Principles and Teaching of Cell Biology New course that was taught as an SCED 513 in Summer of 2007. Missy Parker/Steve Smith moved to approve the course proposal with the following revisions: update Disability Access Center to Disability Support Services; clarify the grading evaluation on the syllabus. Committee recommended approval by consensus. SCED 578 K-12 Science Inquiry New course for the MA K-12 Natural Science Teaching Emphasis. Steve Smith/Audrey Bopp moved to approve the course proposal. Committee recommended approval by consensus. SCED 600 Science Education Research for K-12 Teachers New course for the MA K-12 Natural Science Teaching Emphasis. Steve Smith/Audrey Bopp moved to approve the course proposal with the following revisions: update Disability Access Center to Disability Support Services, clarify grading scale for students, remove paragraph listed after office hours, clarify wording in course objectives, and make clear how the course is delivered (on-line, campus, etc.). Committee recommended approval by consensus. SCED 697 Action Research in Science Education New course for the MA K-12 Natural Science Teaching Emphasis. Missy Parker/Jenny Weber moved to approve the course proposal the following revision: update catalog description to clarify that a student can only take a maximum of 3 credits. Committee recommended approval by consensus. SCED 699 Thesis New course for the MA K-12 Natural Science Teaching Emphasis. Missy Parker/Steve Smith moved to approve the course proposal with the following revisions: add S/U grading and remove Natural Science (listed twice) in catalog description. Committee recommended approval by consensus. CRJ Criminal Justice Minor Minor revision – making CRJ 370 a required course and adding two other 200 level courses to the electives. Missy Parker/Audrey Bopp moved to approve the program proposal. Committee recommended approval by consensus. MATH 510 Seminar in Mathematics: Population Modeling II Variable title course to be taught in Spring 2008. Missy Parker/Steve Smith moved to table the course proposal. Although the required elements of a syllabus were identified, the committee needed more detail within each element to make an informed decision about the course. Committee recommended tabling the course by consensus. Curriculum Deadline for NHS Proposals (for 2008-2009 Catalog) All course/program proposals for the 2008-2009 Catalog are due to the NHS Dean’s office by Monday, November 26, 2007. The November 26th deadline allows the Committee time to review proposals for approval and submit for the February 1, 2008 Catalog copy deadline.
