Sommer Stockinger Quartet and Quintet Vocalist Sommer Stockinger, a native of Tacoma, has been performing jazz throughout the Northwest since she graduated high school in 1997. She attended Pacific Lutheran University for three years, where she continued to explore and expand her musical interests, and refine her skills, through music classes, and ensemble participation. Sommer has evolved through traditional and Brazilian jazz, blues, and R&B, listing as her strongest influences: Nina Simone, Chet Baker, Nat King Cole, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Etta James, and Aretha Franklin. In an industry where labels dominate, Sommer refuses to be defined by any one style of music. Instead, she draws from many different genres to create a sound all her own. To see and hear this angelic looking willowy blonde singing the sweetest ballad, and then turning around and moaning a soulful, pain ridden blues, is truly a revelation. More surprising yet, is hearing her whisper a rendition of a Brazilian classic performed in it's native Portuguese. Not only is she versatile and eclectic, Sommer has the ability to absorb and communicate the intense emotion of a Strayhorn lyric, which completely defies her youth.
