politically a Protestant country with Henry Supreme Head of the
Church. In reality, England was still a Catholic country.
Henry reformed the English Church and this event is called The
Reformation.Thomas Cromwell became the king`s chief
minister.Henry and Cromwell started a careful survey of Church
properties and quite often they found out that some monks were
lazy or they did not obey the rules of their monasteries. As a
result, hundreds of monasteries and religious houses were
closed. Many people were not sorry but monks objected.they still thought of the Pope as
their leader.Henry had another important reason for closing the monasteries as they were
rich and he wanted their wealth.Henry also wanted to be popular with the rising classes of
landowners and merchants. He therefore sold much of the monasteries `land to them.
