If you miss a class, be sure to contact another member of your class (or group). I recommend that you get the names and telephone numbers of at least three (3) students in the class. You are responsible for all materials discussed in class, whether you are present or not. This includes changes in assignments, exam dates, etc. If you must arrive late or leave early, it is courteous to speak privately with the instructor about your reasons for doing so. If lack of attendance is affecting your grade in the course, then you will be withdrawn from the course in accordance with the college policy. Tardiness: Being late to class or leaving early is a disruption to the class and is discourteous to the professor and the other students. All students are expected to stay for the entire class period. If you are more than 15 minutes late for the class, please wait and see the instructor after the class instead of entering the class late. Algebra preparation for the calculus sequence. Topics include a symbolical, graphical, and numerical analysis of polynomials, exponential, logarithmic, power, and rational functions; matrices, sequences, induction, binomial theorem and conic sections. Applications emphasizing connections with other disciplines and with the real world will be included. Technology tools will be utilized in addition to analytical methods. Required materials: 1. Precalculus with Modeling and Visualization, by Gary Rockswold, Third Edition, Addison Wesley, 2006 2. TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator Optional materials: Student solutions manual Attendance: Attendance is required and attendance will be taken every day at the beginning of class. If the student is not present at that time, he/she will be marked absent. Students are responsible for all class materials and any announcements made in class whether or not they are present. Regular attendance and class participation are significant factors that promote success in this course. The instructor may exercise the authority to withdraw any student with more than 4 absences. There will be no “excused” absences. Textbook Homework: There will be suggested homework. The key for success in this course is to do the homework. Depending on your understanding of the material, you may wish to do more than or fewer than the suggested number of problems. Optional Online Homework Assignment There is online homework available for this course using the MyMathLab software that came with your book. There will be an online assignment for each section that we cover in class. At the end of the semester, the homework average from the online homework can be used as an additional grade added into the points in the course. The online homework assignments are due on midnight, the day before the corresponding chapter test. Quizzes: Unannounced quizzes will be given periodically during the semester. Some of the quizzes may be in class and others may be take home. Any take home quizzes are due by the next class period and within the first 10 minutes of class. Late quizzes will not be accepted. Each quiz will be worth 5 points and the best 20 scores will count towards 100 points of your final score at the end of the class. Projects: Throughout the course, hand-in projects will be given. The average of the highest 5 scores on these projects will count as 100 points towards the final grade. Projects are due within the first ten minutes of class. Projects will not be accepted late, nor will there be any make-ups on the projects, no exceptions. Examinations: There will be 3 tests and a comprehensive final given in class. Each test will be worth 100 points and the final will be worth 100 points. Test problems are similar to homework problems, examples in the book and/or examples worked in class. Not taking the final exam will result in a grade of "WF". Tentative test dates are on the attached calendar. The final exam is scheduled for Monday, April 23, 2007, 1:00 – 3:30pm. Only one calculator is allowed on any of the exams. Grades: If you choose not to do the online homework, your grade will be based on the following: 540 - 600 points = A; 480 - 539 points = B; 420 - 479 points = C; 360 - 419 points = D; 0 - 359 points = F If you choose to do the online homework, your grade will be based on the following: 630 - 700 points = A; 560 - 629 points = B; 490 - 559 points = C; 420 - 489 points = D; 0 - 419 points = F Make-ups: NO make-up tests will be given. In case of a medical emergency or legal situation, the final exam grade will replace the missed exam once documentation has been presented and approved by the instructor.
