Noun- Person, Place, Thing
Singular Nouns- name one person, place, thing
Plural Nouns – name more than one person, place, thing.
Rules for spelling plural nouns:
 Add “s” to form the plural of most nouns (fruit =fruits, pea=peas)
 Add “es” in words that end in ch, sh, s,x, or z. (lunch=lunches,
dress=dresses)
 Change y to I and add “es” if the word ends in a consonant and y.
(puppy=puppies)
 Change spelling in special words. (man=men, tooth=teeth,
mouse=mice)
 Some words don’t have changes (elk=elk, deer=deer, sheep=sheep)
5. Common Nouns are nouns that name any person, place or thing (not
capitalized) (boy, state, city, people)
6. Proper nouns name a particular person, place or thing.( capital letters) All
parts of a proper noun are capitalized. (Dan, Georgia, Rocky Mountains,
Lake Erie, Front Street) All weekdays (Saturday), months (June), holidays
(Fourth of July) are capitalized.
7. Names and Titles – All words in a person’s name are capitalized. (Daniel
Lee Smith, A. J. Jones, Fluffy, Mr. Mark Silver, Dr. Driver)
8. Singular Possessive Nouns – A possessive noun shows ownership. To show
a singular possessive noun add an apostrophe and s (‘s). (Jim’s book,
book’s pages, fur’s color, mouse’s eyes, Mr. Evans’s class).
9. Plural Possessive Nouns – To form a plural possessive noun that ends in “s”
juast add an apostrophe. (divers’ suits, swimmers’ caps, pirates’ ships) To
form a plural possessive noun that does not end in “s”, add an apostrophe
and s (‘s). (Children’s toys, men’s hats, sheep’s wool)
10.Compound words are words formed from two words. (boathouse, beehive,
baseball, popcorn).
