UPDATE ON LANDSLIDING / LAKE (VILLAGE ATTA ABAD) - PERIOD COVERED UPTO 1800 HOURS 18 MAY 2010
Latest Situation
 Blockade. FWO has completed excavation work on the spillway and has
pulledout its elements since 15 May 10. Current details of the lake are as

 Expected time of over flow is likely b/w 20-30 May 2010.
 Upstream Area. Following villages have been inundated and population
shifted to safer places:o Ainabad

 Downstream Area.
Basing on worst case scenario (dam breaches
within one hour of overtopping of water). Following number of population
centres and communication infrastructure are likely to be affected:o Population Centers
 District Hunza-Nagar
25 villages
(including Atta Abad & Sarat)
 District Gilgit
14 villages
o Bridges
 RCC
9 (Ganesh and Hini most vulnerable)
 Suspension

 KKH. 22 Kms of KKH has submerged in the lake.
Response by NDMA/GBDMA
 Monitoring mechanism / early warning system established at the site /
Hunza.
 Army troops deployed in Hunza, Gilgit and Chillas to assist civil
administration.
 Boat operation cancelled due to safety considerations.
 2 x Helicopters (6 Aviation Sqn), 2 x MI17 (Army) and 2 x Helicopters of
Agha Khan foundation has been / are being deployed to cater for any
unforeseen.
 Food / NFI provided to GBDMA by ERC (PRCS and FOCUS also
contributing).
 Army Engineer Corps made responsible for maintenance of bridges.
 FWO made responsible for road maintenance.
 UNICEF asked to despatch 500 x Toilets for probable camps and potable
water supply (treatment, storage & bowzer delivery) for upto 30,000
persons.
 Coordination Mechanism. To coordinate response three tier command
and control system devised. In that regard 3 x Control Rooms established
at Hunza, Gilgit and NDMA (Islamabad).
 Evacuations
o Overall resp of evacuation and early warning lies with GBDMA, (Army
will facilitate GBDMA).
o 4647 Individuals (558 families) evacuated from 25 x Villages of District
Hunza Nagar and shifted to 15 x Camps.
o 35% population of affected villages (14 in number) of District Gilgit
have also been shifted to safer places.
Future Challenges
 IDPs Rehabilitation
o Survey of IDPs concerning village Sarat and Attaabad completed and
rehabilitation plan is in process.
o Survey of IDPs concerning villages (submerged) upstream will be
conducted once the water recedes.
o Downstream villages which gets affected due to flooding of water (after
the overtopping of the lake) would be carried out only on
materialization of flooding.
 Opening of KKH. A total of 22 kms of KKH has been submerged in the
lake. After overtopping of the lake, once the water recedes, then detail
survey for opening of KKH would be carried out.
