PROJECT BRIEF
1. Title of the Project: Disabled children send to schooling in India
2. Summary :
The Institute for the Handicapped and Backward People has a plan to provide free education through schooling for
children with disabilities who are healing from the poorest sections of society in West Bengal and also provide for the girl
children with disabilities free meals, cloth, uniform, book, medicine artificial equipments etc.
3.
Project Need and Beneficiaries:
India has some 40 to 80 million persons living with disability, it is estimated that about 30 per cent of them are children
below the age of 18 years. India is of the country disabled children do not receive any form of education Poverty is the
biggest cause of disability in India.
Low literacy rates and widespread social stigma are making disabled people among the most excluded in India society.
At least one in twelve households has a member with disability.
Illiteracy and poverty among the disabled in high. Children with disabilities are 5 time more likely to be out of school than
average.
You are aware of the last year’s Severe Cyclonic Storm “AILA” over the Bay of Bengal during 23-26 May, 2009 in which
two districts had been totally demolishes so there more need of education, food, water and hut for re-construction of the
villages. Not only that there are more disabled children are residing at risk position, they immediately need support
service in all respect. We are working to that area. Instead of warehousing them in a refugee camp, Institute for the
Handicapped and Backward People will provide them with a family, a home, education and an opportunity to become &
part of a larger solution for their community.
Ensuring quality education to out-of-school children with disabilities:
A good education, while having the intrinsic value of securing a more dignified life, also has an instrumental value in
reducing migration, particularly amongst vulnerable groups such as children with disabilities and youth. With limited
engaging local opportunities, migration often becomes the preferred option. Other studies, both in south and north 24
parganas and slums of Kolkata District and nationally, also point to the extremely low levels of learning among children
who have attended school for a few years. Accordingly, Institute for the Handicapped and Backward People’s efforts
have focused on addressing the quality of education to strengthen the attractiveness of special schooling. To this end,
village level non-formal special education centres and residential literacy camps are eager ed for out of school
children with disabilities, thus improving educational status & simultaneously serving as demonstration sites that
engender recognition of quality education at the community level.
Education Scholarships:
Economic poverty is one of the main reasons for children with disabilities going for migration and, accordingly, for not
receiving education. On average, however, children with disabilities and adolescents are able to remit a eager amount
of about $ 60 per annum and this too at the expense of their education. In response to this phenomenon, Institute for the
Handicapped and Backward People has been considering the idea of providing scholarships to such children with
disabilities and their families so that children do not have to leave school due to economic reasons. Investigation into the
feasibility of this solution and others will be an important part of the comprehensive plan.
