WS/FCS 6-8 Science Curriculum Guide Overview In order to address the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS) for Science in middle school, WSFCS is adopting a combination of inquiry materials National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Science Education for Public Understanding Program (SEPUP), the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The new SCOS for Science mandates Inquiry as a major goal at each grade level, therefore WSFCS identified the best Inquiry-based materials available for our students. SEPUP materials are developed at the Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of California at Berkeley. NASA Educational products are developed at the 10 NASA Research centers across the United States. The 2005 North Carolina Standard Course of Study for Science states that all students should have the ability to do scientific inquiry and have an understanding about scientific inquiry. They should demonstrate the ability to perform safe and appropriate manipulation of materials, scientific equipment and technology. The pacing guide on the following correlates NASA, DPI Units and SEPUP activities to the state objectives and lists and estimated number of class periods for each. All the adopted NASA and SEPUP modules lead students toward a mastery of process skills. Students acquire, process and interpret data. They design investigations, identifying variables and their relationships. Students construct hypotheses and experiment to test their validity. Students formulate scientific models and consider evidence and trade-offs to their decisions. Each module is correlated to the National Science Education Standards; those correlations are found in the teacher’s guide. Ancillary Materials and Media The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction has purchased a broad range of science video resources appropriate for the middle grades. These videos and teacher’s guides have been made available on North Carolina Public television and on their website. Teachers and schools have copyright permission to copy and use them in their classroom for as long as the materials are useful. SCIMAX has burned these to DVD format and is making a complete set available to each middle school’s Media Center and the IRC. These programs will be made available in older technology (VHS) however the schools will need to provide blank tapes. The program guides contain: an outline of the program; a complete script and sample review quiz and/or activity. 1 WS/FCS 6-8 Science Curriculum Guide Grade 6 Modules NASA Modules and DPI Units Astro-Venture: Geology Training Astro-Venture: Astronomy Training DPI: Energy and the Universe DPI: Solar Sensations DPI: Our Unique Planet DPI: Ecosystem Interactions DPI: population Dynamics DPI: Waves of Energy Investigations In Earth Science: Earth and the Solar System (not adopted) SEPUP Modules Science and Life Issues: Ecology Investigations In Earth Science: Soil Investigations In Earth Science: Rocks and Minerals Energy from the Sun Household Chemicals II Investigations In Earth Science: Plate Tectonics (not adopted) Investigations In Earth Science: Shaping the Earth (not adopted) Grade 7 Modules SEPUP Modules Science and Life Issues: My Body and Me DPI Units DPI: Human Body Science and Life Issues: Our Genes Ourselves Issues Evidence and You: Force and Motion DPI: Weather DPI Heredity and Genes NASA Modules Astro-Venture: Atmospheric Science Training NASA Connect: The A-Train Express Rockets- Newton’s Laws of Motion The Brain in Space Muscles and Bones NASA Connect: Atmospheric Detectives 2 WS/FCS 6-8 Science Curriculum Guide Grade 8 Modules SEPUP Modules Science and life Issues: Evolution Science and life Issues: Microlife Issues Evidence and You: Water NASA Modules Mission Geography-remote sensing Mars Student Imaging Project DPI Units DPI Units : Chemistry of matter DPI Units: The Hydrosphere Ocean Odyssey DPI Units: The Cell and Cell Theory DPI Units: Evolution and Landforms NIH Module Chemicals, The Environment and You Scientific Inquiry Kit Refurbishment Starting in the fall of 2005 we will have a refurbishment meeting once each semester. The kits will also be replenished over the summer in preparation for the following school year. 2009 kit refurbishment will be slightly delayed and should be complete by the end of September 2009. 3 WS/FCS 6-8 Science Curriculum Guide Activity Grade 6 Evaluating Advertisements Exploring Chemical Interactions between Solids and Liquids Exploring Chemical Interactions Among Liquids Surveying Students’ Perceptions of Chemicals Investigating the Effects of Bleach CAREER Start Lesson 1 Using inquiry skills Determining the Optimum Use of Bleach Chemical Safety in the Home Product Testing; A Case Study Designing a Household Chemical Student-Designed Testing of Student-Designed Products Making Evidence-Based Qualitative and Quantitative Claims CAREER Start Lesson 1 Using inquiry skills Investigation: Focus on this Source SEPUP SEPUP Module Household Chem. 2 Household Chem. 2 Classes 3 3 NC Objectives Grade 6 101, 1.02. 1.05, 1.06, 1.08 1.01, 1.04, 1.05, 1.06, 1.08 SEPUP Household Chem. 2 2 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, 1.05, 1.06, 1.07 SEPUP Household Chem. 2 2 1.01, 1.02, 1.04, 1.05, 1.06, 1.07, 1.08 SEPUP Household Chem. 2 1 1.06, 1.07 1 1.01, 1.05 Career Start SEPUP Household Chem. 2 1 1.01, 1.06, 1.07, 1.08 SEPUP SEPUP SEPUP SEPUP Household Chem. 2 Household Chem. 2 Household Chem. 2 Household Chem. 2 3 2 3 3 101, 1.02. 1.05, 1.06, 1.08 1.01, 1.02, 2.03, 2.04 1.01, 1.02, 1.03,1.04,.02, 2.03, 2.04 1.01, 2.02, 2.03, 2.04 SEPUP Household Chem. 2 2 2.04 1 1.01, 1.05 2 6.01, 6.04, 6.05 Career Start SEPUP Energy from the Sun 4 WS/FCS 6-8 Science Curriculum Guide Activity Grade 6 Investigation: Comparing Colors Investigation: Keeping Cool Investigation: Invisible Light Investigation: Ultraviolet Power Source SEPUP SEPUP SEPUP SEPUP Module Energy from the Sun Energy from the Sun Energy from the Sun Energy from the Sun Classes 2 2 2 2 Investigation: Follow the Bouncing Light Investigation: SUNsational Protection SEPUP Energy from the Sun 2 6.01, 6.04, 6.05 SEPUP Energy from the Sun 1 6.01, 6.04, 6.05 Planet Tic-Tac-Toe NASA StarChild CD 2 1.09, 5.01 Scavenger Hunt NASA StarChild CD 1 The Planets and Moons of Our Solar System Where Oh where, Does that little Planet Go?
