EIGHTEENTH WORLD CONGRESS
ON VIKTOR FRANKL’S LOGOTHERAPY
JUNE 22-26, 2011
DALLAS, TEXAS
THEME: FOSTERING SPIRITUAL VITALITY
FOR OUR WORLD IN DISTRESS
PRESIDENT EMERITA
Bianca Z. Hirsch, PhD
Box 15211, Abilene TX 79698-5211 USA
Telephone (325) 692-9597
Fax (325) 692-9188
Pre-Congress Workshops will be
scheduled as follows: Introduction to
Logotherapy, Tuesday and Wednesday,
June 21-22. The three Intermediate
Courses will be Monday - Wednesday,
June 20-22, including Franklian
Psychology:
Attitudinal
Change:
Meaning-Centered Intervention; and
Theory and Therapy of Mental
Disorders.
The Congress will open with the
Presidential Reception at 8:00 p.m.,
Wednesday, June 22. The Keynote
Address and opening session will be
Thursday morning at nine o’clock
followed by multiple, simultaneous
presentations, workshops and plenary
sessions all day and evening Thursday,
all day Friday, and again Saturday
morning. The festive Awards Banquet
will be Friday evening and the Clinical
Colloquium is scheduled for Saturday
afternoon.
After three days of intellectual,
emotional and spiritual “overload,” our
International Fellowship Evening
Saturday will feature a fabulous Texas
Barbeque followed by a Texas Line
Dance with participants from 18 to 80+
discovering more energy and fun than
they knew they had in them.
The
International
Friendship
Breakfast Buffet will end by midmorning on Sunday. Our closing
moments together are always filled with
poignant, meaningful interaction before
parting to go to distant corners of the
world. Many of us remember the Sunday
morning at a previous World Congress
when Hadi Asghari from Iran came to
the microphone and said “Goodbye and
Thank You” in 8 languages!
Our Logotherapy World Congresses
have been described as mountain top
and life changing experiences. At our
World Congress last year, there were
participants from 37 nations, major
cultural diversities, and 5 major faiths.
Many who came as strangers to each
other reported feeling a sense of
belongingness and oneness. Truly the
spirit of Viktor Frankl was calling out to
us to say YES to life, to choose health
and wholeness, and to find and share
meaning and purpose. The Institute’s
International Board of Directors and
Congress Committees hope you and
many in your influence will plan now to
participate in the Eighteenth World
Congress on Logotherapy.
The Call for Papers will be sent out
next month with registration applications
soon after. The Congress (including all
programs,
scheduled
meals,
and
activities) will be held in the MarriotQuorum Hotel, one of Dallas’ luxurious
hotels where the $279.000 per night
room is available to Congress
participants for the incredible group rate
of $114.00 per night, single or double
(maximum of 4 per room). Details,
including Continuing Education credit
availability, will arrive soon!
The James Crumbaugh Memorial
Research Award will be inaugurated
and presented for the first time at the
Eighteenth
World
Congress
on
Logotherapy, 2011, along with a second
new award for Excellence in Graduate
Student Research.

ACADEMIC ASSOCIATE AND DIPLOMATE CERTIFICATES
Not an award, but certainly an achievement
of distinction, Academic Associate and
Diplomate certificates were presented during
the Awards Banquet at World Congress
XVII. These certificates represent successful
completion of advanced study in a specific
discipline, namely Logotherapy. After 2 or
more years of supervised study, individuals
proudly display these coveted certificates in
homes and offices around the globe. Our
Board of Directors frequently reiterates that
certification in the Institute’s stellar
educational program is certainly not
equivalent to completing an academic
degree and in no way bestows faculty status
on the candidate any more than earning a
university degree automatically elevates a
student to faculty status. The following
certificates were presented at World
Congress XVII in June, 2009.

Reports from fully affiliated Institutes in
South Africa and Israel
In both South Africa and Israel, expertly
prepared faculty members continue to teach
the APA approved curriculum material of
the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy
headquartered in the United States of
America (VFIL/USA), including the
Introductory, Intermediate, and Advanced
courses. At the Viktor Frankl Institute of
Logotherapy in South Africa, monthly
meetings are held relating the concepts of
Logotherapy to various issues and concerns
in South Africa communities. Dr. Teria
Shantall recently addressed a meeting
attended by more than 300 women on the
topic, “Finding Our Destinies in Life.” The
response was such that a CD was made of
the recorded presentation.
Heading the educational program of the
VFIL of South Africa which is based at the
Center for Applied Psychology of the
University of South Africa in Pretoria, Dr.
Teria Shantall is assisted by four faculty
members, Mark Durston, Audrey Weiner,
D. Kanda, and Sorette Roos. Each of these
individuals holds Diplomate credentialing
from the Viktor Frankl Institute of
Logotherapy headquartered in the United
States of America (VFIL/USA). The
VFIL/USA’s APA approved courses have
full accreditation from the University of
South Africa and the Health Professions
Board of South Africa.
The Viktor Frankl Institute in Israel.
After several years of negotiating and
meeting mutual approvals and requirements,
the Viktor Frankl Institute of Israel is a sister
body of the VFIL/USA, and is now legally
incorporated in Israel. Under the leadership
of Gideon and Judith Millul, the Institute’s
fully sanctioned educational program holds
the rights and privileges of reciprocity of
credentialing with the VFIL/USA. A two
year educational program in Logotherapy
was recently completed at the Gordon
College of Education in Haifa where the
Logotherapy Institute in Israel is
headquartered. The courses were taught in
Hebrew by Gideon and Judith Millul,
Haya Horvitz, and Dida Kimar, assisted
by Dr. Teria Shantall who is also a
member of the International Board of
Directors of the Viktor Frankl Institute of
Logotherapy, USA.
Dr. Shantall, Dida Kimar and Batya Yaniger
have recently started a two year course in
Logotherapy which is taught in English. The
VFIL/Israel is negotiating with the Bar Ilan
University in order to expand Logotherapy
activities in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
Gideon Millul reported that, in addition to
those who completed the two year Academic
Associate credential, 13 individuals have
now completed the additional advanced
requirements over a period of time to earn
the Diplomate in Logotherapy credential, 5
earning the Diplomate Clinician, and 8
the Diplomate Educator/Administrator.
These individuals have returned to their
communities throughout Israel, fully
prepared to use Viktor Frankl’s concepts of
Logotherapy
in
their
contemporary
responsibilities. Some of these graduates
received their diplomas at the 2009 World
Congress in Dallas. We hope others will
have completed requirements and can be a
part of the rich international fellowship
during the Eighteenth World Congress on
Logotherapy in Dallas, June, 2011.
The Canadian Chapter of the Viktor
Frankl Institute of Logotherapy has been
organized and officially approved by our
International
Board
of
Directors.
Headquartered in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the
Canadian Chapter’s President is Edward
Marshall, MD, PhD. Two regional groups
are already active, the Logotherapy Study
Group of the Maritimes under the
direction of Maria Ungar Marshall, PhD,
and the Logotherapy Study Group of
Vancouver under the direction of Paul
Ungar, MD, PhD. All three individuals are
Diplomate Clinicians in Logotherapy and
Board approved Faculty members of the
Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy.
In Finland, after a decade of diligent work
and visionary leadership, Dr. Irmeli Sjolie
often has as many as 5 Logotherapy courses
being taught simultaneously in Finland and
adjacent Scandinavian countries. Marianne
Prado comes from Brazil several times
each year to teach the Art Therapy
specialization
combined
with
the
Logotherapy curriculum in Finland. In
addition, Marianne Prado and other
VFIL/USA
Board
approved
faculty
members continue to teach the Institute’s
Logotherapy curriculum in Brazil.
Logotherapy in Australia is now in its
beginning organizational stages for an
educational program of outstanding quality
in which Viktor Frankl’s Logotherapy will
be expertly taught.
The Distance Learning program of the
Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy is
now making it possible for the Institute’s
Logotherapy curriculum to be taught in
more than 40 countries. Dr. Ann Graber,
Dr. Cynthia Wimberly, and Dr. Ann Marie
Neale continue to make dreams and goals
become realities for individuals around the
world who could never travel great distances
in order for their lives to be enriched by
studying Viktor Frankl’s Logotherapy. Dr.
Ann Graber reports that our newest Distance
Learning students are from Japan, Russia
and Singapore.
