The following code of practice must be complied with: Code of Practice for Manual
Handling (Wellington: Department of Labour, 2001). Available from the Occupational

The following code of practice may be relevant in some workplaces: National Code of
Practice for Utilities’ Access to the Transport Corridors (Wellington: NZ Utilities
Advisory Group, 2009). The code is available for downloading from

Assessment against this unit standard must take place in a workplace environment.
Assessment parameters will be dependent on company and site specific equipment,
procedures, and practices. Practices must reflect industry best practice and comply
with legislative requirements.

Definitions
Company requirements include the policy, procedures, and methodologies of the
company. They include legislative and regulatory requirements which may apply
across the company or to a specific site. Requirements are documented in the
company’s health and safety plans, traffic management plans, contract work
programmes, quality assurance programmes, policies, and procedural documents.
Job instructions are those given to the operator prior to undertaking a job. They may
include site safety instructions, contract drawings, and written memos.
Stand over refers to work on gas, telecommunications and power services that
should be carried out under supervision of the relevant service provider.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Prepare for excavation.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Job instructions are confirmed with supervisor in accordance with company
requirements.
Range
1.2

materials, services identification, stand over permit, safety.
Hand tools and equipment are selected for specified task and checked for
serviceability.

three of – shovel, pick, crowbar, spade, grubber.
Outcome 2
Carry out manual excavation operations.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Excavation is carried out in accordance with company requirements and job
instructions.
2.2
Handheld digging tools are used in accordance with the Code of Practice for
Manual Handling.
2.3
Excavation is cleared of loose material in accordance with company
requirements.
2.4
Excavation tools and equipment are cleaned, maintained, and stored in
accordance with company requirements.

Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA, or
an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can
report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading
to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by
NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.
