Syntax of the English Phrase

This course gives an overview of the structure of
different types of phrases in English. The course
consists of 4 main parts: the first part is an
introduction to the basic mechanisms of syntactic
argumentation, the second part focuses on the
structure of the verb phrase, the third part analyses
the structure of the noun phrase, including adjective
phrases, and the fourth part is on the semantic and
grammatical properties of adverbs and adverb
phrases.
After completing this course, students will be able to:

- explain, and illustrate the use of, different syntactic
tools in the identification, analysis and evaluation of
verb phrases, noun phrases, adjective phrases and
adverb phrases
- correctly apply linguistic metalanguage in the
description of syntactic phrases
- evaluate the structure of different phrases in terms of
their grammatical correctness
- create different types of phrases
- compare and analyse the similarities and differences
between the English and Croatian syntactic systems
