THE FOURTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY
AT
CHRIST CHURCH ANGLICAN
SAVANNAH, GEORGIA
1
We pray that everyone who comes to worship at Christ Church Anglican leaves with a clear understanding of the Gospel.
Everything that takes place in our worship is there to offer the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all who wish to receive it.
What is this Gospel? It can be summarized in four elements:
CREATION – We have been created in God’s image, as the crown of His Creation and the delight of his heart.
SIN – Due to our selfishness, we rebelled against God and sought to live life according to our own wants and desires.
JUDGMENT – Our rebellion distorted the divine image within us beyond recognition and has alienated us from our Creator,
resulting in great pain and confusion and bringing us under His righteous judgment.
REDEMPTION – God, in His mercy, provided a remedy: Jesus Christ, who died in our place on the cross, taking the just
punishment that was rightly ours, and rising bodily from the grave. Through repentance from sin and faith in Christ’s act of
love and mercy on our behalf, God gives us forgiveness and the gift of the Holy Spirit, who transforms our lives and offers us
new life, beginning in this world and carrying us into the glory of the world to come.
WELCOME TO CHRIST CHURCH ANGLICAN

ON THE COVER: THE JERUSALEM CROSS The four smaller crosses are said to symbolize either the four books of the Gospel or the four
directions in which the Word of Christ spread from Jerusalem. Alternatively, all five crosses can symbolize the five wounds of Christ during the
Passion, the Pentateuch and, presumably, the first five Christian Churches.

THE ORDER OF SERVICE
From the 1662 Book of Common Prayer
The time before worship is a time to be quiet before the Lord, to prepare your heart and mind for worship through prayer, to
review the worship bulletin, to prepare your prayer book and hymnals, or to read through the music notes. As we move into the
musical prelude think of it as prayer, as a means of drawing you from the street and into God’s Holy Temple. Let us then, in
silence, prepare ourselves to worship the Living God. Latecomers are encouraged to enter at times when the congregation is
standing.

The Nicene Creed
I believe in one God, the Father Almighty
maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages,
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He shall come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church.
I acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE LITURGY OF THE TABLE
The Celebrant addresses the congregation:
If you truly and sincerely repent of your sins, are reconciled and at peace with your neighbors, and
intend to lead a new life, following the commandments of God and walking from this day forward in his
holy ways; draw near with faith, take this holy Sacrament to strengthen and comfort you, and make your
humble confession to Almighty God.
The Confession of Sin
Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all people, we acknowledge
and confess our many sins, which we have committed from time to time by thought, word and deed
against your divine Majesty, provoking most justly your righteous anger against us. We earnestly repent,
and are deeply sorry for all our wrongdoings. The memory of them grieves us and the burden of them is
too great for us to bear. Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father.
For your Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past and grant from this time forward we
may serve and please you in newness of life, to the honor and glory of your name; through Jesus Christ
our Lord. Amen.
The Celebrant then declares God’s forgiveness:
Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those
who with sincere repentance and true faith turn to him: Have mercy on you, pardon and deliver you
from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life, through
Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Celebrant Hear the words of assurance addressed by our Lord Jesus Christ to those who truly turn to him:
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28)
God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but
have eternal life. (John 3:16)
Hear also what St. Paul said: The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus
came into the world to save sinners. (1Timothy 1:15)
And hear what St. John said: If anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the
righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole
world.
The Great Thanksgiving
Celebrant The Lord be with you.
People
And with your spirit.
Celebrant Lift up your hearts.

Standing
The Celebrant continues
Holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, Creator and Preserver of all things, it is good and right at all
times, and in all places, to give you thanks and praise…
Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim and magnify
your glorious Name, forever praising you and saying:
The Sanctus
All sing together
The Prayer of Humble Access (in unison)
We do not presume to come to this your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in
your abundant and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your
table. But you are the same Lord, who always delights in showing mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious
Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may
be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may
evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.
The Celebrant continues,
Almighty God, our heavenly Father you, in your tender mercy, gave your only Son our Savior Jesus
Christ to suffer death upon the Cross for our redemption: who made there (by his one oblation of
himself once offered) a full satisfaction, perfect self-offering and sufficient sacrifice, for the sins of the
whole world; and instituted, and in his holy gospel commanded us to continue, a perpetual memory of
his precious death, until he comes again.
Hear us, merciful Father, we humbly pray, and grant that we receiving these gifts of your creation, this
bread and this wine, according to your Son our Savior Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of
his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed Body and Blood: who, in the same night
that he was betrayed took Bread; and, when he had given you thanks, he broke it and gave it to his
disciples saying: “Take, eat: this is my Body which is given for you: do this in remembrance of me.”
In the same way, after supper, he took the Cup; and, when he had given thanks, he gave it to them,
saying: “Drink this, all of you, for this is my Blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for
many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
The People respond AMEN.

Agnus Dei
All sing together
The Celebrant says the following Invitation
The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed
on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.
All believing Christians baptized in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, are invited to receive the
sacrament. To do so, place your right hand on your left and lift your hands, palms up, towards the Celebrant. Lightly grasp
the base of the chalice and help guide it to your lips. Should you prefer not to sip from the chalice, allow the Bread to
remain in your palm so that the chalice bearer may dip it in the wine and place it in your mouth. If you are not baptized,
or if you prefer not to receive the Sacrament, fold your arms for a Blessing instead. If you are physically unable to come
forward but do wish to receive communion, inform an usher so that the sacrament may be brought to you.
Intercessors are available for prayer in the back of the nave

After all have received Communion, the Celebrant says, with all standing,
Let us now pray in the words our Lord has taught us, saying,
Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil;
For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory,
Forever and ever. Amen.
Post Communion Thanksgiving
Remain Standing
All say together
Almighty and ever-living God, we most sincerely thank you that you graciously feed us, who have duly
received these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son
our Savior Jesus Christ. We also thank you that you have assured us in this Sacrament of your favor and
goodness towards us, and that we are true members of the mystical body of your Son, the blessed
company of all faithful people, and are also heirs, through hope, of your eternal kingdom, by the merits
of the most precious death of your dear Son. And we humbly ask you, heavenly Father, so to assist us
with your grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as you have
prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be all
honor and glory, forever and ever. Amen.

MUSIC NOTES
About our new Hymn for September: God is Working His Purpose Out—In 1894
Arthur C. Ainger (b. Blackheath, England, 1841-1919) wrote the text for use by the boys at
Eton College, where Ainger was a popular schoolmaster from 1864-1901. Educated at Trinity
College, Cambridge, England, Ainger wrote numerous songs and hymns for use at Eton.
"God Is Working" provides a clear testimony that God is the Lord of history, that he "is
working his purposes out" even when we cannot fathom his ways. The entire text affirms the
passage from Philippians 2 where we are commanded to "work out your salvation with fear
and trembling, for it is God who works in YOU to will and to act according to his good
purpose."
The tune (Purpose), written by English composer Martin F. Shaw for this text, was published in
the 1931 edition of Songs of Praise. Purpose is a vigorous tune that suggeststhe folk idiom that
Martin Shaw loved so dearly. The entire hymn requires singing in long lines (lots of breath!)
and a marching articulation on the organ. Clearly, it is a powerful tune, one that allows the
singer to feel both God’s feet, and ours along with Him, marching through time.
