FY 1993-94 NRS Annual Report
PART 7. NARRATIVE
Campus:Berkeley
Reserve:Frances Simes Hastings Natural History Reservation
Prepared by: Mark R. Stromberg
Research Program
Hastings is primarily organized as a research facility. Full time resident researchers include Associate
Research Zoologist Dr. Walt Koenig and Research Associate Dr. Janis Dickinson. Dr. Koenig continued his
active research on Acorn Woodpeckers, and worked with a graduate student, Ginger Bolen, on Yellowbilled Magpies. In 1994, Ginger Bolen was granted a four-year NSF Doctoral Fellowship. Dr. Mark
Stanback worked this year (his last of 3) as a postdoctoral fellow with Dr. Koenig. Dr. Joey Haydock, the
new post-doctoral fellow on the Acorn Woodpecker project, spent some time overlapping with Dr.
Stanback in June of 1994. Dr. Koenig and Dr. Dickinson had a group of up to five research assistants.
Hastings’ Research Ecologist Dr. Jim Griffin, although retired, continued to contribute to Hastings through
early June, 1994. Additional part-time research is done by Academic Coordinator Dr. Mark Stromberg who
also has administrative duties as the Reserve Manager. Current projects by these and other researchers are
listed elsewhere (Part 5, Current Research). Support continued from several significant grants to these
researchers from national and local competitive sources (Part 5, Current Research). Among these are an NIH
postdoctoral grant to Dr. Janis Dickinson and an NSF grant to Dr. Walter Koenig. A wide variety of research
results has been published by the investigators mentioned above (Part 6).
In addition to the work of residents, a broad variety of research topics is being explored at Hastings
(see Part 5, Current Research and Appendix 1). Dr. Keith White, the resident research ecologist in the early
1960s, returned to Hastings to visit, and spent three weeks resampling stands of Monterey Pines in the
Carmel/Monterey area. He and his wife stayed in a private house in Carmel, arranged through Dr.
Stromberg. Dr. White’s data span 30 years and will be used to evaluate the status of this endemic,
threatened species and the effects of urban growth on this species. Dr. David Gubernick, Univ. of
Wisconsin-Madison, was awarded a grant to test the value of male care in a monogamous mammal. Dr.
Gubernick selected Dr. Taye Teferi who will move to Hastings in July of 1994. Dr. Tim Halliday (Open
Page 1
University, UK) spent a month observing behavior and population status of local salamanders. Dr. Juergen
Kesselmeier (Max Planck Institut, Germany) spent a month monitoring atmospheric carbonyl sulfide uptake
by lichens, studying their role in global sulfur balance. Dr. Jenella Loye, from UC-Davis, spent the last of
her three summers at Hastings conducting field work on parasites of Western Bluebirds. Graduate students
from several universities lived and worked at Hastings, including Jean Knops (Arizona State University; role
of lichens in nutrient cycling in oak forest), Gretchen LeBuhn (UC-Santa Barbara; population biology of
native lupines), Uwe Kuhn (Max Planck Institut; with Kesselmeier), and Sanjayan Muttulingam (UC-Santa
Cruz; population genetics of gophers) . A long list of visiting scientists worked at Hastings, many for only
brief periods (Appendix 1).
A recent trend in the use of Hastings is the continued adjustment in the number of user-days to the
level more suitable to our housing availability (Figure 1). Numbers of user-days also reflects a trend by
researchers to make repeated short trips to Hastings, often day trips. The increase in different individuals
using Hastings (Figure 2) is largely due to the number of research assistants present. Research assistants
arrive from many different colleges and universities (Appendix 1) to engage in “hands-on” learning and
work.
Many articles from Hastings staff or researchers working at Hastings were in press or
published in 1993-1994 (Part 6, and below). Dr. Dickinson’s research on the behavioral ecology of Western
Bluebirds is starting to enter a productive period of publications. Dr. Koenig and his colleagues continue to
publish work on social organization and ecology of Acorn Woodpeckers, and they have published the first of
several papers on the ecology of acorn production by the oaks of Hastings. A somewhat humorous article
and a more formal article were published on the incidental observations by Jean Knops and Bill Schlesinger
on lizards falling into buckets set out to collect litter - leaves, falling lichens, acorns, etc.
Educational Program
Hastings hosted eleven groups (Part 4) during the reporting period. Five of the groups were
traditional classes, with six other group visits from private or non-profit organizations. A total of 278 userdays were registered by these visitors. Several of the usual classes which visit Hastings were not offered this
Page 2
last year (due to sabbaticals or biannual class schedules), but are scheduled for fall of 1994. A significant
new class, that of Marine Biology from UC-Davis, has moved from Bodega Marine Lab due to the better
dives at Carmel Beach and more readily available housing here. Dr. Grosberg expects to return with his
marine biology class on a regular basis. Hastings has only one large building suitable for classes (10 beds
in Robertson House, with nearby tent sites); it is only available during the fall and early to mid-winter.
From July 14 through August 18, Hastings organized public lectures which were presented each
week in Pacific Grove and Carmel Valley. Six speakers from around the state presented lectures to about
150 people a week. A descriptive flier for the lecture series is attached. Support for the lecture series was
provided by the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History (PGMNH) and others.
From April 9, 1994 through June 30, Hastings presented a display of 12 research programs underway
at Hastings. A series of posters, photographs, equipment, stuffed animals and prepared plants were included
for each research topic. In addition, a display on the history of the Hastings Reserve was prepared. Over
2,500 elementary and secondary school students as well as over 2,000 Monterey County residents saw the
exhibit. We acknowledge the contribution of the PGMNH and particularly that of Dr. Steve Bailey’s
generous help.
A monthly newsletter was written and distributed. More detailed narratives of activity at Hastings
can be found in the newsletters. The newsletter is written and distributed to inform adjacent neighbors and
friends of Hastings, as well as those doing research on Hastings, administrators on the Berkeley campus, and
the statewide NRS office.
Facilities Development
Funds from various campus sources allowed us to prepare bids and award a contract for installation
of six 3,500 gallon water tanks, a new water main and 4 fire hydrants. A new fill line from the well to the
storage tanks was installed. Storage tanks were installed on the hillside above the older 10,000 gallon
redwood water tank which has been kept filled and available for fire suppression needs. Ozone injectors
were installed on each storage tank to purify the water. An automatic control mechanism was installed to
Page 3
keep the tanks filled. A new pump motor was installed after a failure in the power line caused the old motor
to burn out; a new electronic pump motor protector was installed at the Hastings well.
Private funding allowed us to rebuild the Hastings Cabin, installing a new foundation, new wiring,
new plumbing, new septic tank and field, insulation in walls and ceiling and major repairs to the windows
on the porch. New flooring in the kitchen and a new air-tight fireplace completed the rustic rehabilitation. A
new entrance was installed and an old, eroding road was closed and planted with native grasses.
Funds from the Office of the President, Natural Reserve System, allowed us to hire two carpenters
from early 1994 through the end of the fiscal year. Working with Mark Johnson, Dave Smith and Barry
Powell worked to prevent rodent entry into the buildings. The purpose of the work was to reduce the
exposure of Hantavirus to residents. Hantavirus is a deadly respiratory disease carried by deer mice and has
been identified as the cause of one death on the Valentine Reserve and on a ranch in nearby San Luis Obispo
county. New foundations were installed in Fanny’s Cabin, the Robertson House and the Red House.
Trapping revealed a dramatic decline in mouse captures; in most buildings no mice were caught. Thousands
of chewed out holes in old wooden foundations were sealed and areas around chimneys, doors, windows and
vents were sealed.
By September, 1993, legal negotiations on the status of Martin Road were complete and a new
electronic gate was installed at the entrance to Hastings on the Carmel Valley Road. This gate is tied to the
phone systems of the residential buildings. Having a closed gate at the entrance near Carmel Valley Road
provides much-needed reduction in public access. With dramatic increases in the population of Greenfield
and Soledad in the Salinas Valley, traffic on the Carmel Valley Road has increased dramatically. Cost of the
gate was shared by Hastings, Natural Reserve System, Boekenoogen Ranches Inc., and the Tregea Trust
(Palo Escrito Ranch).
Our reserve steward, Mark Johnson, continued to provide logistical support to all the researchers and
to keep our facilities in the top possible condition. As a part of the Hanta virus clean up, considerable
vegetation was removed from around the buildings, and many rodent-infested piles of old building material
and junk were removed.
Page 4
Helen Johnson and Fanny Arnold, both private donors, made it possible for us to purchase a used
Ford 1715 4-wheel drive tractor, loader and 7’wide grading blade. This tractor will allow increased
productivity and efficiency in maintenance, and will allow us to start replanting native grasses in old fields.
