1779. Nathan Cole was born in MA (1850 Census).
1781. Polly Cole (Cole) was born in MA (1850 Census), may have also been called Mary Cole.
c1800. Nathan and Polly were married.
1804. Nathan and Polly moved from the town of Winfield in Herkimer Co NY to the town of Pamelia
in Jefferson Co NY, which is about 12 miles N of Watertown NY on SR-37. It is not clear if they
moved to the town of Pamelia or the township of Pamelia: In NY state townships are called towns.
1812. During the war of 1812 they lived near a blockhouse to which the children were taken
whenever there was a rumor the British were coming.
1850. Census of LeRay Town/Twp of Jefferson Co NY indicates: Nathan Cole age 72, farmer,
$2,500 real estate owned, born MA; Polly Cole age 69, born in MA (p128/d343/f349); Chauncey
Cole age 37, born in NY; Esther Cole age 35, born in NY; Elimira Cole age 17, born in NY; Sanford
Cole age 15, born in NY; Serena Cole age 13, born in NY; Pembroke Cole age 8, born in NY;
Raselus [Rassealus] age 7, born in NY; James Oscar Cole age 5, born in NY; June Cole age 4, born in
NY; Leona B Cole age 11/12, born in NY (p128/d343/f350). Chauncey is Nathan's son and Esther is
Chauncey's wife. Sanford, James Oscar & June are probably Chauncey & Esther's children, but are
not confirmed by a second source as the other children are.
1854. Aug 8th, Polly Cole (Cole) died, buried in Sanford Corner Cemetery in Jefferson Co NY,
which is about 8 miles N of Watertown NY on US-11.
1861. Jul 8th, Nathan died, buried in Sanford Corner Cemetery.

12 miles N of Watertown NY on US-11. 2 Children:
1. Mary8 Stewart (Goulding) married Amos Goulding in 1843 and she died in 1908.
Apparently there are no descendants as she bequeathed her Bible and other personal things to
Josephine Cole (Beckwith), daughter of her brother Charles (See 14th child below).

NY] (100 acres, N 1/2 of Lot 25 Concession IX Bayham Twp Elgin Co). Eden is only 12 miles S of
Norwich ON where Emeline Cole and William R Sherman were married: Emeline is the daughter of
Charles's brother Silas (See child number 8 above). 5 Children:
1,2,3. Unnamed8 Cole died at birth or early infancy.
4. Josephine P8 Cole (Beckwith) was born May 30 1852. Married Dec 24 1871 to Millard
Cleon Beckwith by Geo Rockwell. 3 Children:

Note. The 1880 Co Map of San Fran Twp Carver Co MN shows a W Cole and a William
Cole in sections 20, 29 & 30, which is about 15 miles E of Norwood MN on the MN River.
<Check 1870, 1875 & 1880 censuses to confirm this is the correct person>.
Also on the above 1880 map, in sections 4,5 & 8 in Young America Twp in Carver Co MN is
a Nathaniel Cole family (relationship unknown), this is 2 miles W and 1 mile N of Norwood
MN.
The 1870, 1875 & 1880 censuses indicate: Nathaniel Cole farmer, born 1815 in CT, both
parents born in CT; Mary Cole born 1818 in OH; Silas Cole born 1849 in IN; Martha Cole
born 1852 in IN; Emily Cole born 1857 in MN; Ida Cole born 1858 in MN; Emma Cole born
1860 in MN; Jured Cole born 1802 in CT, both parents born in CT; Orpha Cole born 1809 in
CT. It is possible Nathaniel & Jured are brothers.
A 1882 Carver Co History indicates Nathaniel Cole came from Warwick Co IN in 1856 and
had a brother named Alfred Cole that lived near by. In 1859 Nathaniel was elected as Justice
of the Peace for the town of Young America. In 1858 a John Cole was elected constable for
the town of Watertown MN. (Copy at Carver Co Historical Society, 119 Cherry St, Waconia
MN 55387).
16. Olivia7 Cole died at age 10 months.

1813. Lucy Steel was born in NY State (date from cem/WT; location from 1860 Census & JCB).
c1814. Silas Cole was born in Town/Twp of Pamelia in Jefferson Co NY, The town is located about
10 miles NW of Watertown NY (JCB).
1820+. Much of the following information about Silas Cole will not apply, but at this time it is
research material to help find his location(s) from 1820 on, and his place and date of death.
1820. Census Index indicates a Silas Cole in OH (LDS/AIS).
c1830. Silas and Lucy were married.
1830. Census Index indicates a Silas Cole in CT, MA, NH, OH, PA & VT (LDS/AIS).
1830/50. Silas Cole does not appear in the Land Record Index or the Biographical and Genealogical
Index of the Archives Of ON (letter from Archives, Oct 13 1988).
1834. Oct 12th, daughter Emeline Cole born in NY (1870 & 1900 Censuses) or in Canada (1880
Census), see below.
1840. Census index of New York State lists two Silas Coles: (1) LeRay Town/Twp in Jefferson Co
(LDS/AIS p26), and (2) Wales Town/Twp in Erie Co (LDS/AIS p297). Neither were listed earlier in
the 1830 or later in the 1850 census index. There were also Silas Coles listed in CT, IN, MA, NH,
OH, PA, RI, & VT (LDS/AIS). <check Tuscola Co MI>.
1840. Census of LeRay Town/Twp Jefferson Co NY indicated a Silas Cole family: The age groups in
the census matched Silas, his wife Lucy, and 4 oldest children named Benjamin, Emeline, Charlotte
and Willard (p26).
1840. Census of Tuscola Co MI indicated no Silas Cole. Census of Lapeer Twp (all of the NW corner
of county) Lapeer Co indicates no Silas Cole, but a Rueben Cole family with 8 males and 2 females
(p20).
1841. <Check censuses for Oxford & Elgin Counties ON.
1845. <check census for State Census, Tuscola Co MI>.
1847. Son Alfred born in Michigan (1870, 1880 & 1910 Censuses below).
1847/66. Silas's brother Charles Grandison Cole lived near the village of Eden in Elgin Co ON, after
which they returned to the US (100 acres, N 1/2 of Lot 25 Concession IX Bayham Twp Elgin Co).
Eden is only 12 miles S of Norwich ON where Silas' daughter Emeline Cole and William R Sherman
were married.
1848/55. Apparently they lived in West Canada (Ontario) as some of their children were born there,
Lucy Cole born 1848 and Willard Cole born 1855 (1860 Census of Attica Twp Lapeer Co MI).
1850. Triplets were born, they died young (JCB).
1850. Morality Schedule for MI had 9 Coles, but no Silas.

1850. Census Index for MI indicates no Silas Cole in the State, but in Washington Twp Macomb Co
it indicates a Lucy M Cole on p137. <check census for Lucy>.
1850. Census index indicated there were Silas Coles in the states of IN, MA, MI (Cass Co) MO, NH,
OH, PA and RI (LDS/AIS). Check of actual censuses indicated all were the wrong family.
1850. The following census was interesting because of the given names, but wrong family. Census of
Stark Twp Coos Co NH indicated: Silas Cole age 35, farmer; Lucy M Cole age 35; Emeline Cole age
14; Fanny Cole age 11; Ralph [unclear] Cole age 9; Seth Cole age 6; Lucinda Cole age 3; all born in
NH (p140/d117/f48).
1850. Censuses of Tuscola Co & Lapeer Co indicated no Silas or Lucy Cole. It is believed they lived
in ON, near the border of Oxford and Elgin Counties, near Tillsonburg.

1854. Mar 21st, daughter Emeline Cole married William R Sherman in Canada, could have been in
Norwich Twp in Oxford Co where William was born and raised. Emeline's mother Lucy Steele
(Cole) was a witness. No knowledge that the Cole's lived here, but it is likely they at least lived
nearby. Silas's brother Charles Grandison Cole lived in Eden about 12 miles S of Norwich in Elgin
Co ON.
1854. MI Census index of Pokagan Twp, Cass Co, MI indicates a Silas Cole (LDS/AIS). Wrong
person. See 1850 above.

1854. Sep, their son Hugh Cole was born in West Canada (1900 Census below for Hugh).
1854. Oct 26th, Alinas Cole settled in Akron Twp Tuscola Co (1883/h). Relationship unknown. See
1858 item below.
1857. May 8th, William & Emeline's son Alonzo was born in Blandford Twp in Oxford Co ON.
1858. Jul 15th, A [Alinas] H Cole was chairman of the Council that organized the First Baptist
Church in Tuscola Co (1883/h). See the 1854 item above.
1859. Hugh Cole, their son age 4 years who was born in Canada West, immigrated to US (1900
Census of Elba Town/Twp Lapeer Co MI (p107/d112/f121): Probably immigrated with his mother.
1860. Census of Tuscola Co & Lapeer Co indicated no Silas Cole.
1860. Census of Attica Twp Lapeer Co MI indicated: Edward Woodrow age 70, farmer, born PA,
$14,000 real & $571 personal property [uc]; Lucy Woodrow age 48 [aka Lucy Cole], keeping house,
born in NY; John Woodrow age 24, farmer, born in Canada West; Mary Cole age 12, born in Canada
West; Hugh Cole age 5, born in Canada West (p697/d457/f449). See 1870 census below.
1860. Silas Cole was either dead or divorced, which could have happened after the conception/birth
of his youngest child in 1855 in ON and before July 1st 1860 when Lucy is shown married to Edward
Woodrow and living in Lapeer Co MI. There are no death records for Silas Cole in Tuscola Co MI or
Lapeer Co MI, so if he died it was probably in ON.

1860+. There was no Silas Cole shown on the maps of Tuscola Co (1875/map; 1888/map;
1902/map).
1861. S Cole, born USA, Baptist, single (1861 Census, Bayham Twp Elgin Co Ontario, div 5 page
10). This person is unknown.
1862/65. Internal Revenue Assessment Lists for Tuscola Co MI indicated no Silas Cole (IRAS).
1864. <Check MI census, Tuscola Co>.
1870. Census of Watertown Twp in Tuscola Co MI indicated a Lucy Woodrow age 55 [aka Lucy
Cole], without occupation, born in NY, she could not read or write (p14/d113/f112). She was living
with William R & Emeline Sherman, and is Emeline's mother Lucy Steele (Cole) (Woodrow). See
1860 census of Attica Twp Lapeer Co MI above.
1870. Census of Tuscola Co MI indicates no Silas Cole.
1870. Census of Young American Twp in Carver Co MN indicates a Silas Cole (p304/d17/f17). This
is a 21-year-old son living with his parents, not the right Silas Cole.
1874. No Coles in Deerfield, Marathon or Rich Twps in Lapeer Co (1874/map). <check Attica Co
Lapeer Co>.
1875. Lucy Steele (Cole) (Woodrow) died, and is buried in grave 1 lot 394 old Watertown Cemetery
(cem/WT). TUS/DR not found. Margie Cole Greene (who is Alfred Cole's granddaughter) said Lucy
Steele (Cole) (Woodrow) is the Lucy "Mother" buried with Alfred Cole and family in lot 394. <check
Lapeer Co for death record>.
1881. Census of E Oxford Twp S Oxford Co ON indicated: Edward (uc) Woodrow age 83, widow,
farmer, born in ON, W Methodist, English origin; living with William & Ann Bertrem family (p6566/d237/f243).
1883. Silas Cole not mentioned in the History of Tuscola Co (1883/h).
1888. No Coles in Watertown Twp (1888/map).
Note. The flow blue stoneware milk pitcher I have is said to be from this Lucy Steel (Cole's)
mother: It was from "grandma Steele." (LSL).

1841/42. Simeon Ostrander was born in Upper Canada: Parents Andrew Ostrander born 1797 in
Upper Canada and Sarah Ostrander born 1803 in Upper Canada (1871 & 1881 Censuses below).
Sarah Ostrader nee Sarah Buchner, 1802-1883 (Bob Mutrie, Ontario). Nov 12 1847 Andrew
Ostrander obtained Patent from the Crown for 100 acres (S 1/2 of Lot 24 Concession IX Bayham
Twp Elgin Co ON.
1861. Census Index Bayham Twp Elgin Co ON indicated Simeon Ostrander age 20, labourer, lived
with parents, preference shown as New Connection Methodist Church (p5-6). <get actual census>.
1862. Nov 26th, Simeon Ostrander age 21, born and resident of Bayham County, son of Andrew and
Sarah Ostrander, married Charlotte Cole, born in NY and resident of Bayham Co, daughter of Lucy
& Silas Cole (Eligin Co Marriage Records 1858-1869).
c1863. Photograph of a young couple, possibly on their wedding day, taken by J Pollards
Photographic Studio Broadway in Tillsonburg ON (4 miles N of Eden). Identified as Charlotte & Sim
Ostrander (owner Norene Sherman (Hill), Rochester MI).
1865. Dec 30th, 50 acres transferred from Andrew Ostrander to Simeon Ostrander (W 1/2 of S 1/2 of
Lot 24 Concession IX) (Elgin Co Land Record 3696). This is near the village of Eden where
Grandison Cole, Silas's brother, lived 1847-1866 (N 1/2 of Lot 25 Concession IX Bayham Twp Elgin
Co).
1871. Census Index of Bayham Twp Elgin Co ON indicated: Simeon Ostrander age 29, farmer, born
ON, Methodist; Charlotte Ostrander age 34, born USA, Methodist; Eusebia Ostrander age 7, born
ON, Methodist; Lovisa Ostrander age 5, born ON, Methodist (p4-30). <get actual census>.
1877. Atlas of Bayham Twp indicated an S Ostrander, just E of Eden, in Lot 24 Concession IX.
1882. Feb 10th, Charlotte Ostrander, an adult, was Baptized by Minister John Wilson at the Jefferson
Ave Methodist Church in Saginaw MI (Saginaw Timerlog Spring 1977 Vol V Issue 3).

1894. Census of Port Huron Ward 6 indicated a Charlotte Ostrander lived with Albert & Fred W

1900/10. Censuses of Cass City MI and Elkland Twp Tuscola Co indicated there were no Ostranders
living there.

different Daniel Cole because of the age difference, but reportedly is this same Daniel Cole (JBC).
There was a Daniel Cole born 1804 in Oneida Co NY, married in 1839 to Louisa Phelps who was
born Jul 19 1818 in Jefferson Co NY, daughter of Barret Phelps born c1789 in Washington Co NY.
Lived in Rodman NY, about 10 miles S on US-11 and 4 miles E on SR-177 from Watertown NY.

1874. Oct 6th, Alfred R Cole, living in Marathon Twp in Lapeer Co MI, bought 40 acres in
Watertown Twp in Tuscola Co MI from James H Campbell for $700 (SW 1/4 of NW 1/4 of Sec 3)
(TUS/LR 36-565).
1875. Aug 4th, Alfred Cole and his wife sold the above property to Isaac Kelley for $1,000 (TUS/LR
39-445). Name shown as I Kelley (1888/map).
1875. Sep 18th, Alfred Cole bought 80 acres, across the road from the above property, for $800 (S
1/2 of NE 1/4 of Sec 4) (TUS/LR 39-534).
1877. Alfred Cole and family were apparently in MN, as their son Leland was born in MN (1880

1908. Mrs A R Cole and daughter Dora May Cole of Columbiaville are visiting R C Meyers and
others relatives (MMN June 4 1908 p1c1). [Could be Norma M born 1906].
1908. Mrs A Cole and daughter of Columbiaville visited at J Maler's the first of the week (MMN
Jun 11 1908 p8c2).
1910. Census of Oregon Twp Lapeer Co MI indicated: Alfred Cole age 63, born in MI, parents born
in Canada; Catherine Cole age 49, born in NY, both parents born in Germany; Christine Lunnwebber
[unclear] age 22, step-daughter, single, born in NY; Norma M Cole age 3, daughter, born in MI; both
married 2nd time for 13 years, she had 1 child & 1 alive; owned farm free of debt; all could read &
write; farm schedule 190 (p272/d275/f220).
1919. Possible: Alfred married at age 72 to Eva R Sutton age 64, born c1855 (LAP/MR 5-183).
1920+. Alfred married again when quite old and had a girl who died in her teens; she was never very
healthy; Alfred lived in Florida in his old age with daughter Lucy until he passed away (LSL).
1926. Alfred Cole died. No TUS/DR. <check for TUS/PR> Buried in grave 4 lot 394 old Watertown
Cemetery (cem/WT). Alfred left no descendants by the name of Cole. 8 Children:
1. Cora E9 Cole (Brown) 1868-1888. Jun 4 1884; Frank A Brown age 22, farmer, born &
living in Watertown; and Cora E Cole age 16, born and living at Watertown; were married at
Mayville by Rev J H McCune; witnesses were Mrs J H McCune of Mayville and David B
Sherman of Watertown (TUS/MR 3-188). No TUS/DR found. "Cora Cole: 1868-1888" is
buried in grave 7 lot 394 old Watertown Cemetery (cem/WT).
2. Wilard M9 Cole 1870-1876. No TUS/DR found. Buried in grave 5 lot 394 old Watertown
Cemetery (cem/WT). <Check Lapeer Co death records>.
3. Sanford P9 Cole 1874-1956. Married Nora Rice, 1873-1928.
c1900. Sanford and his brother Leland went to Northfield MN and bought farms. Dec 12 1917
Sanford returned to MI and bought for $3,400 40 acres of the William R Sherman's farm in
Watertown Twp (NE 1/4 of NE 1/4 Sec 11) (Liber 173 of Deeds p198).

Cole age 45 born 1875 in MN, father born in MI and mother in MN; child Merle A Cole
(e199/p37/s10/d231/f247).
1928. Nora died and is buried in grave 3 lot 351 old Watertown Cemetery.
1934. Sanford was witness to the signing of the will of Hannah L Sherman on Aug 13 1934,
his residence was shown as Sunshine FL.
xxxx. Sanford P Cole, a widower of Mayville MI sold the farm he bought in 1917 to Thomas
J & Emogene Corwin for $1 and other valuable consideration (Liber 249 of Deeds p530).
1956. Sanford died and is buried in grave 4 lot 351 old Watertown Cemetery (cem/WT). No
TUS/MR or TUS/DR. 3 Children (LSL):
1. Margie10 Cole (Greene), married Clare Greene, lived in Detroit MI, had no
children. <check TUS/MR 4-72>.
2. Dorothy10 Cole (Vaughn), lived in Detroit MI, had a son who had a son.
3. A Merle10 Cole was born 1905 in MN. Died 1920, buried in grave ____ lot 351 old
Watertown Cemetery (cem/WT).
4. Leland D9 Cole 1877-unk (died prior c1917). Married Gertrude R Rice, who was a sister
to his brother Sanford's wife, Nora Rice (ft/ajb).
c1900. Leland and Sanford and their families went to Northfield MN and bought farms.
xxxx. Leland died in MN and was probably buried there: Reportedly struck by lighting (LSL).
No record of death in MN between 1908/20 (mc/ letter from MN Dept of Health, Oct 13
1987).
xxxx. Gertrude married 2nd a Mr Morrel (TUS/MR 7-282).
1944. Gertrude married 3rd in Flint MI to Mahlon Butler of Watertown Township (TUS/MR
7-324).
1963. Gertrude died (TUS/DR 61-228), and buried in grave 1 lot 363 old Watertown
Cemetery with Mahlon Butler. No children (LSL).
5. Charles A9 Cole 1879-1899. No TUS/DR found. Buried in grave 8 lot 394 old Watertown
Cemetery (cem/WT).
6. Lucy C9 Cole (McDonell) 1881-1969. After her husband died she moved to Florida, had
an orange grove. She is buried in grave 8 lot 351 old Watertown Cemetery (cem/WT).
7. Agnes9 Cole 1883-1883. May 8 1883 Aggie Cole, age 0y1m26d, born and died in
Watertown, died of an unknown cause, parents Alfred Cole of Watertown and Maggie Cole
deceased (TUS/DR 3-136). Buried in grave 8 lots 394 old Watertown Cemetery (cem/WT).
8. Norma M9 Cole was born Jul 1906 in MI; born to Mr & Mrs A R Cole of Oregan Twp
Lapeer Co a girl (MMN Jul 19 1906 p1c1).

1860. Census of Attica Twp Lapeer Co MI indicated Mary age 12, born 1848 in Canada West, lived
with her mother and her mothers 2nd husband Edward Woodrow (p697/d457/f449).
1870. Census Almont Twp Lapeer Co MI indicated Mary Cole age 24, domestic servant, born in MI,
lived with a farm family named Abner Hall (p23/d239/f352). <check marriage of Mary M Cole in
1898, TUS/MR 4-210, also check LAP/MR>
8,9,10. Triplets8 Cole were born and reportedly died young in the 1850's (JCB). Hugh Cole below
may have been one of the triplets.

lived with his mother and his mother's 2nd husband Edward Woodrow in Attica Twp Lapeer Co MI

12. Willard8 Charles or Charles Willard8 Cole. Relationship Unresolved. It is possible the
Willard/Charles Cole, who was born 1857 in Canada, who lived in Edmore MI Montcalm Co in
1900-1921 could be Emeline Cole (Sherman's) brother: Alonzo J Sherman was Emeline's son. If so,
then Silas Cole's death was probably between 1857 and 1860 when Lucy was remarried. See below.

1921. December, a Willard Cole of Edmore MI attended the funeral of Alonzo J Sherman in Mayville
MI (obituary). The C & O Railway connects Mayville & Edmore.
1987. Montcalm Co Clerk has no death record for Willard Cole between 1921-1970 (mc/mcc).
