A B # 17 L EARTH SCIENCE Global Earthquake and Volcano Patterns Name: _______________________________ Lab Instructor: WAUGAMAN COOKE 2014-2015 S C O R E _________ 50 Lab Period: ____ Problems: 1. What is the pattern of earthquake distribution over the Earth? 2. How do the locations of mountain chains and volcanoes compare to earthquake locations? Objectives: After you have completed this investigation you should be able to: 1. Search the Internet for recent earthquakes. 2. Identify regions of high seismic activity on a world map. 3. Search the Internet for locations of volcanoes. 4. Identify regions of high volcanic activity on a world map. 5. Determine if areas experiencing frequent earthquakes are associated with other unusual crustal features or crustal activity. Procedures: 1. Go to the following website: http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/qed/ a. Choose 30 Days M2.5+ in drop down menu top left. b. Using the world map, shade in the regions that have experienced earthquakes in the last 30 days with a GREEN pencil. It is not necessary to mark where every earthquake has occurred just the general regions. Be sure to include oceanic earthquakes also. 2. Go to the following website: http://earth.rice.edu/mtpe/geo/geosphere/hot/volcanoes/volcanoes_b2.html a. Shade the regions with volcanic activity with a RED pencil. 3. Go to the following website: http://www.columbia.edu/cu/news/06/08/images/HeezenTharp_900.jpg a. Shade the oceanic mountain belts with a BLUE pencil. (Shown in grey in the oceans) 4. Go to the following: http://teachers.sduhsd.net/hherms/herms/GEOLOGY/mtn-bldg/Cte2002.JPG 5. http://www.ii.uib.no/~petter/mountains/World_pic/world50.jpg http://www.dorlingkindersley-uk.co.uk/static/clipart/uk/dk/sci_earth/image_sci_earth017.jpg a. Shade in the continental mountains with an ORANGE pencil. (Shown in orange on the map) Questions: Answer the following using complete sentences. 1. Describe the areas (region), of the world, where the most earthquake activity occurs annually. What is the name given to describe this area? ______________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________ 2. Describe the relationship between the locations of the volcanoes, mountain ranges, and regions of frequent earthquakes? ____________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ 3. What would cause earthquakes be common in mountain ranges? ____________________________________________________________________________ 4. Name and describe the process that is occurring in the regions where earthquakes and volcanic mountain chains are in the same place. Specifically around the Pacific Ocean. ____________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ 5. Suppose you had a choice of going to one of the following locations: Anchorage, Alaska; Istanbul, Turkey; Allegany, NY; Stockholm, Sweden or San Francisco, California. a. At which location(s) would you most likely experience frequent earthquakes? ___________________________________________________________________ b. At which locations(s) would you be least likely to experience any earthquakes at all? ___________________________________________________________________ ● Anchorage, Alaska, ● Stockholm, Sweden ● Allegany, New York San Francisco●, Earthquakes = Green ● Istanbul, Turkey Volcanoes = Red Oceanic Mountain Belts = Blue Continental Mountain Belts = Orange
