Consultant Physician with Interest in Diabetes and Endocrinology
Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde
Introduction
Living and Working in Glasgow
Today Glasgow is a compact, vibrant and modern city. In fact Glasgow’s scale comes as a
surprise to some people. It has the largest suburban rail network outside London and is
second only to the UK capital as a retail centre.
There are top-ranking schools, excellent leisure facilities, beautiful golf courses and elegant
accommodation across all price ranges.
The nightlife and restaurants are renowned and its opera, theatres, art galleries and
museums offer plenty of cultural stimulation.
From Glasgow, the West of Scotland’s jewels are within easy reach. Loch Lomond is just 45
minutes drive, a little further to the Argyll peninsula – or over the sea to Arran, Skye, Iona
and Mull.
Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde
The Queen Elizabeth University Hospital is a new purpose built hospital that opened its
doors in May 2015. The hospital has 1109 beds and will provide medical care to a
population of around 700,000 people in west and south Glasgow. The hospital will provide
the full range of medical and surgical services and many tertiary specialties including
neurology, ENT and renal medicine. It will also be one of the 4 hospitals in Scotland to admit
major trauma cases from next year.
Development of the new QEUH has allowed inpatient and acute medical care from the
Western Infirmary, Victoria Hospital and Southern General to be consolidated to a single
site. Outpatient diabetes and endocrine care will now be delivered by a team of 15
consultants in diabetes and endocrinology (including these posts) at the QEUH, Gartnavel
General and Victoria Ambulatory Care Hospital. All major subspecialties are catered for
including clinics for patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, insulin pump services,
transition and adolescent diabetes, general endocrinology and bone and mineral
metabolism delivered from all three sites. The South Glasgow Diabetes Pregnancy service
is based at the QEUH. Sub specialty endocrine activity at the QEUH includes clinics in
endocrine genetics, endocrine hypertension, a joint endocrine oncology clinic and Turners
clinic. The QEUH is also the site of the West of Scotland regional neurosurgical service
generating a large workload relating to pituitary disease and will be the centre for specialty
inpatient endocrine investigation. Taken together the QEUH offers an excellent environment
for the development of subspecialty interests.
These posts will also cover 16 beds in the receiving complex on a rotational basis with
colleagues in diabetes & endocrinology as well as rheumatology and infectious diseases. In
addition the post holder will have a commitment to care of inpatients.
3
West Glasgow Diabetes and Endocrine Unit, Gartnavel General Hospital
The Gartnavel campus is situated in the west end of Glasgow and provides out-patient and
some in-patient specialist services for the area. The West of Scotland Cancer Hospital,
Glasgow Centre for Integrative Care and Gartnavel Royal Psychiatric Hospital is also on
site.
Diabetes and endocrine services are delivered in a purpose built unit. The Gartnavel
diabetes clinic is the largest in Glasgow and offers specialist intensive insulin, pump, foot
ulcer clinics and structured education. It is supported by a full multi-disciplinary team. There
are general endocrine and thyroid clinics.
We enjoy close links with Glasgow’s three universities and make a significant contribution to
teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Research also has a high profile
within the organisation. We provide excellent facilities for students and their tutors in the
Wolfson Medical School, based at Glasgow University.
By joining us now you will have the opportunity to be involved in the development and redesign of services enjoying a real chance to shape services for the future.
There are extensive teaching commitments and all members of the units are involved in
teaching undergraduates and postgraduates.
It is expected that 9 programmed activities per week (4 medicine, 5 specialty) will be
devoted to direct clinical care, with 1 programmed activity allocated for supporting
professional activities.
