1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is

The Academic Advisor, Student Athletes, and Director, Academic Services for Student Athletes
positions are responsible for academic advising of student-athletes and development and growth of a
successful student-athlete advising program. These functions are necessary to provide each studentathlete with a successful college experience by providing the assistance necessary to ensure a
balance between academic success and athletics while working toward the ultimate goal of
graduation and personal growth. The positions report to the special Assistant to the President for
Athletic Academics and Compliance.
Range 2 – Academic Advisor, Student Athletes:
The Academic Advisor, Student-Athletes, advises student-athletes on class schedules in the context
of mandated Conference and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) regulations relative to
progress toward graduation; monitors academic progress; serves as liaison between coaching staff,
departmental advisors and university student services, and Admissions and Records; staffs the
Intercollegiate Athletics (ICA) Study Center and computer lab; and assists in recruitment process.
Range 3 –Director, Academic Services for Student-Athletes (in addition to above R2):
The Director of Academic Services for Student-Athletes plans and coordinates academic success
programs for all components of advising, progress toward graduation and overall satisfactory progress
for student-athletes. The position provides and coordinates academic programs such as academic
student advising, proficiency/evaluation testing, student admissions, and student retention. Incumbent
monitors provides leadership experience and coordinates the programming, advising, and academic
support on all aspects of the academic process to ensure NCAA rules are being followed and
oversees NCAA and the Conference) academic documentation required for Division I status, including
collecting and monitoring all required paperwork. The Lead Advisor hires tutors, monitors operation
and scheduling of student advising events, and ensures adequate staff coverage by interns.

 Advise student-athletes on class schedules to ensure compliance with mandated Conference
and NCAA regulations, in particular those with initial and continuing eligibility issues and
progress toward graduation
 Monitor the academic progress of all student-athletes including attendance and grade checks
 Determine and document satisfactory progress toward degree completion
 Support CHAMPS program, as needed
 Promote effective communication between student-athletes, parents, coaching staff, faculty
and staff
 Conduct team outreach on a regular basis
 Act as liaison for daily business with the Admissions and Records Office
 Serve as a liaison between the coaching staff and faculty, departmental advisors and
university student services and coordinate completion of progress reports
15% - Recruitment and Orientation
 Assist in the recruitment process of potential student-athletes by conducting initial recruitment
meetings

Evaluate transcripts to determine if student-athletes meet the Admissions and Records
standards and meet NCAA eligibility requirements
Explain all available academic support services on campus
Support transition program for new students within CHAMPS/Lifeskills

The decisions and judgments made by this position impact the Intercollegiate Athletics Program, the
President and the University in its entirety. It is essential that the integrity of the ICA Department be
maintained. The student-athlete population is arguably among the most highly visible student
populations on campus. This group of students is governed by, among other documents, Conference
and NCAA rules and regulations. Knowledge of appropriate rules is critical not only for the well-being
of the student-athlete, but for the University as well. Because of this high visibility, the Athletic
Program requires solid support in areas of academic advising and the monitoring of academic
progress.

The NCAA Board of Directors requires compliance with the Academic Reform Legislation for all
Division I NCAA institutions. This legislation is the “Incentive and Disincentives” package and

severely penalizes all institutions at which the student-athletes are not attaining mandated NCAA
academic standards and progressing toward a degree. These penalties include, but are not limited to,
loss of scholarship, public reprimands of the institution to the national media, loss of post season play
opportunities and loss of the very considerable revenue sharing. The Academic Advisor assists
incoming student-athletes with the knowledge and life skills necessary to succeed as a studentathlete.
