KWT/3/C/6 Appendix 6 Rare and threatened invertebrate and vascular plant species identified from desktop study We were able to find reference to 78 invertebrate species which were either included on the relevant UK Red List and/or listed in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan and/or in the section 41 list of species of principal importance for nature conservation in England. These are listed in the table below. In addition to the above, we were able to find reference to 18 vascular plant species which were either included on the relevant UK Red List and/or listed in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan and/or in the section 41 list of species of principal importance for nature conservation in England. This list excludes species considered Nationally Scarce (previously known as Notable, in the case of invertebrates) or rare or scarce in the county, except where they are included within one of the classifications below. Data sources were Kent and Medway Biological Records Centre, Kent Red Data Book, historic survey data held on Kent Wildlife Trust files, and survey data reported in documents associated with the planning proposals. Explanation of Red List categories applicable to invertebrates: RDB1 Endangered (pre 1994): Taxa in danger of extinction and whose survival is unlikely if the causal factors keep operating. RDB2 Vulnerable (pre 1994): Taxa believed likely to move into the Endangered category in the near future. NB Vulnerable (post 1994): From 1994, a taxon was determined as Vulnerable when it was not Critically Endangered or Endangered but was facing a high risk of extinction in the wild in the medium-term future, RDB3 Rare (pre 1994): Taxa with small populations which are not at present Endangered or Vulnerable but are at risk. RDBK Insufficiently known (pre 1994): Taxa suspected of falling within categories 1-3, but about which there is insufficient information to be certain. NB a lower-case ‘p’ before the RDB criterion indicates provision status, where the status has not been formally published. Critically Endangered: a taxon is Critically Endangered when it is considered to be facing an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild, based on best available evidence and assessment against identified criteria. Endangered: a taxon is Endangered when it is considered to be facing a very high risk of extinction in the wild, based on best available evidence and assessment against identified criteria. Vulnerable: a taxon is Vulnerable when it is considered to be facing a high risk of extinction in the wild, based on best available evidence and assessment against identified criteria. Near Threatened: a taxon is Near Threatened when it has been evaluated against the criteria but does not qualify for Critically Endangered, Endangered or Vulnerable now, but is close to qualifying for or is likely to qualify for a threatened category in the near future. NB a lower-case ‘p’ before the RDB criterion indicates provision status, where the status has not been formally published.
