ART AND SHADOW ART 6/2 2014 – 23/ 3 2014 Czech Centre Prague, Rytířská 31, Prague SHADOW 6/2. 2014 – 17/ 3 2014 Galerie NoD, Dlouhá 33, Prague THE SUN IS SHINING ON A DUSTY CORNER 7/ 2 2014 – 31/ 3 2014 Windows Gallery, Czech Centre Vienna, Herrengasse 17, Vienna Press release, Czech Centres - Headquarters Prague, 5/2 2014 The curating duo, Edith Jeřábková and Dominik Lang, prepared an exhibition that will be displayed in the exhibition space of the Czech Centre Prague and in the Gallery NoD starting this February. It will introduce the artwork of students from a Vienna art school and two Prague art schools. This large project originated through the cooperation of the Czech Centres, the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, the Academy of Art, Architecture and Design in Prague and the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. The title ART AND SHADOW expresses a seeming contrast between the tangible and the intangible, which poses questions on the topic of „what is art?“ and “how is actually a piece of art constituted by its shadow?” The exhibition consists of two parts. The first part, with the title ART, focuses on spatial forms in the Czech Centre Prague, while the foundation of the installation in the Gallery NoD, is constituted of works floating on walls like SHADOWS. EFFECT IN A CONTEXT The project reflects the beginning of the cooperation between the Czech Centres and renowned institutions including: Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and Academy of Art, Architecture and Design in Prague. This interconnection was inspired by the book Art and Its Shadow written by Italian theoretician, Mario Perniola (*1941). The ambition of this relatively extensive project is to attempt to find answers to basic aesthetic questions through workshops, seminars, presentations and exhibitions taking place throughout the year. In addition to that, it also focuses on the development of relations between art institutions, such as the Regional Gallery of Fine Arts in Zlín or the Secondary School of Art, Architecture and Design in Bechyně. Simultaneously with the presentation of the work of Czech and Austrian artists taking place in the Czech Centre Prague and the Gallery NoD, there is a parallel exhibition in the Windows Gallery in Vienna. Each presentation will introduce the work of students from the trio of the cooperating universities. A reciprocal exhibition is planned for the second half of this year in the Austrian gallery Büro Weltausstellung. CZECH CENTRE PRAGUE, GALLERY NoD The exhibition taking place in Prague is divided in two parts. It will focus on spatial forms under the broad name “art” in the Czech Centre Prague, while in the NoD the exhibits will be moving on the walls like “shadows”. Both parts are open to the public from 6 February 2014, but their closing dates differ. The Gallery NoD hosts the exhibition until 17 March 2014 and the gallery of the Czech Centre Prague until 23 March 2014. The exhibition entitled The Sun is Shining on a Dusty Corner will take place in the Windows Gallery in Vienna (7/2 – 31/3 2014) parallel to the exhibition in the Czech Republic. THE SUN IS SHINING ON A DUSTY CORNER WINDOWS GALLERY, CZECH CENTRE VIENNA 7/2 2014 – 31/3 2014 The Austrian part of the project entitled The Sun is Shining on a Dusty Corner will address visitors in Vienna and its organizer, the Czech Centre Vienna, will lure an audience to the showcase of the Windows Gallery. The “showcase”, in this case, represents a space where people look for something to buy, something pleasing, but they actually see only themselves. The project is a result of the collective work and thought of UMPRUM students Anna Ročňová and Jan Boháč. MARIO PERNIOLA’S INTERPRETATION OF SHADOW Many of us suspect what art is and we think we know what shadow is. For the aesthetician, Mario Perniola, shadow is an area that confirms and activates the existence of objects and art. Art without a shadow, same as a figure without a shadow, cannot be trusted – they lack both a past and a present. Perniola is not interested in an illuminated artefact, he is interested in its background, reasons for its origin, the connection to its theme and exhibiting, the circumstances regarding its existence, its commentary, critique, and history. And despite the fact that the curators did not reject an exhibit or illumination, some of Perniola’s thoughts appear in the work of the students. VARIOUS TRAITS OF MODERNNESS In its two parts “Art” and “Shadow”, the exhibition guides its visitors through various forms of modernity. Diversity comes to the fore in full significance, whether it is in the form of Athens, the countryside, large or small gestures, views of architecture, pocket or shelf souvenirs, memorabilia, spotted motifs, names found, their partitioning and displacing, from the east to the west and from the west to the east. The exhibition has an open conception. The main curators are Edith Jeřábková and Dominik Lang, who invited Jiří Příhoda, Pavel Humhal, Simone Bader, Heimo Zobernig, Roland Kollnitz and the students from AVU and UMPRUM in Prague and from AdBK in Vienna to collaborate with them.
