Ancient Civilization Gingerbread Build Time Line Be sure to check timeline often since dates may change and additional information will be added. 10/17/13 Students begin researching an Ancient Civilization culture that interests them. 10/25/13 Notes and possible structures for the culture are submitted. 10/28/13 Groups must be solidified. Mrs. Cooke must approve any trading of groups by this date. 11/18/13 Individual members one page, single-spaced typed page with size 12 font on the structures researched. Remember, no two members may submit the same structure. Paper includes: Ancient Civilization Culture’s name, structure’s name, details about what the culture was used for, and brief overview of significance of the culture. 11/18/13 Group decides which structure they will use. Members will begin researching structure size/dimensions and calculate scale to be used. (1inch = 5 feet is an example of scale groups might consider) Each member must write a paper using the information gathered. Keep in mind the 6 traits of writing. You will be writing a rough draft, revise, edit, and final draft. Each member should research in depth the structure. Groups members may share information but each person is responsible for their paper’s content. Suggested items to include are: - Background about your civilization - Where is it located? - When (years in use) - Uses - Who used it? - What it’s made of? - How did they build it? - Significance to the civilization - Interesting facts about the structure (design, architecture, decorations) - Find and print out a map of present day and ancient times 11/26/13 Individual group member will submit their scale drawing of the structure they selected. 11/26/13 Groups will build structure to scale using file folders. (This will take 1-3 class periods plus possibly time at home.) Week of 12/2/13 groups will begin building their cardboard structure frame. Use your model to make a stronger structure to build around. The gingerbread will be placed on this structure. Students will bake the gingerbread at home and bring to school on 12/16. Reports are due on 12/16; they must be typed, double spaced with no spelling or grammatical errors. Actual gingerbread building of structures will be 12/17. It is advisable to have one parent per group to assist the group.
