The consonant letter is not doubled if the syllable is unstressed. Hyphen: is used to join prefix to root word, especially if prefix ends in a vowel letter & root word begins with a vowel Fer: The r is doubled if the –fer is still stressed when the ending is added. The r is not doubled if the –fer is not stressed when the ending is added. Ible/Ibly: the ible ending is common if the root word cannot be heard before it but also sometime occurs when a whole word can be heard eg sensibly (able/ably is much more common)
