Activity N° 1 : Management
Coordination Board Meeting
The first coordination board meeting took place on May 28 pm. It was followed on May 31
pm by a short brain-storming exchange on the plenary and workshops meeting of the week.
All activity coordinators were present. The objective was to survey progress of work and
difficulties met during this first period of the project. The following questions were addressed:
•
Re-organisation/clarification of activities
- Workplan for seminars / surveys / state-of-art studies and other productions
- Identification of task (topic) leader and of working group
- Way to produce documents
- State of progress
- Look at Orléans activity minutes
- Look at project deliverables
• Organisation of annual meetings - workshops: plenary but also space for free discussion
among partners of a topic.
• Look at meeting agenda
• Reporting
• Other
The main points of discussion and conclusions were:
-
-
-
-
-
The need to have a coordination board meeting prior to plenary meeting is recognised
by all participants.
The project started with nearly 5-6 months delay and participants get slowly involved
in the project: participants are clearly more familiar with research projects than
coordination actions. The project is complex and it is clearly needed to regularly
refresh participants’ minds on project objectives and on their precise role and duties.
It was stressed that for several tasks more precision on who is doing what is still
needed: this must be clarified during the activity workshops (who ? content of
workshops, etc).
A presentation of all deliverables of the project was presented by the coordinator by
types (surveys/enquiries, web-site, data-bases/analysis of data-bases, state-of-art
synthesis; other production, etc) as well as some examples of integrative deliverables.
It was pointed out several redundancies in particular in workshops/seminars
organisation and need to group together several meetings.
Progress has been recognised in several tasks (web-site, data-bases, surveys, etc).
Several questionnaires/surveys have been prepared and circulated among participants;
many others are still to be prepared: concern is to avoid redundant questionnaire and a
non-organised way of circulation: the risk is that participants submitted to too many
demands will not respond or forget to respond on time. It is proposed to use the website to archive the request documents and to have an up-dated agenda table to remind
people duties.
The fair implications of all participants must be carefully checked. The coordinator
particularly stressed this aspect. There is a clear expectation by coordinators for a
more voluntary role of several participants to specific tasks beyond the basic
contractual participation.

organisation of annual meeting: the organisation of a half-day conferences as managed
during the 1st annual meeting was much appreciated and plan is to repeat this
experience during all plenary meeting. Suggestions for topics are expected. The field
visit is also appreciated to see breeding on the concrete side.
Organisation of workshops during the annual meeting : suggestion by several
participants is to avoid to split them in two periods (initially planned to i) reduce group
size to favour discussion, ii) to allow participants implicated in several activities to
join ): the suggestion is to organise activity workshops with the whole group and then
let free time for smaller task groups to meet.
As much as possible, it will be attempted to join together plenary meetings with some
activity workshops/seminars in order to reduce cost and save time for participants. It
was suggested by J.Buiteveld to have such workshop during next annual meeting in
The Netherlands around Intellectual Property rights, Protection of biological material
(ABS), etc. It is also suggested by the coordinator to take advantage of plenary
meeting to have a joined one-day presentation of partners’breeding programmes for
the key-species identified in the project.
Several systems to facilitate circulation of information among partners (e.g. mail list,
forum, list-server mail) have been presented by G.Douglas. The list-server mail will be
tested within activity nr 6.
Circulation of information will be done through one person per partner who is in
charge to forward the information to his/her colleagues.
The meeting agenda was revisited.
Plenary meeting
A major part of the plenary meeting devoted to management concerned the presentation by
the coordinator of annual reporting duties for all partners, for activity coordinators, and for the
coordinator. The agenda was presented as well as where to find the relevant information on
the web-site and prepared file to be fulfilled.

Activity N° 2: Towards the creation of the European Tree Breeding Centre
Coordinators: Partner n° 10 (Metla) and n° 1 (INRA)
Two main networking issues were addressed:
-
-
web-site : the web-site architecture was presented by partner 1 to all partners for
comments, advices, etc; Comments were mostly favourable and minor problems were
related. The site will be progressively enriched with new services (e.g. staff databases:
need to enlarge it, to have better key-words to find back people, etc ; connection to
data-bases, duties agenda, discussion forum, etc). A second part oriented mostly
towards professionals and the public is still needed. Its architecture is already present
on the site but volunteers to work on these aspects are still needed.
data-bases : a summary of agreements met during the Zaragoza meeting was
presented by partner 10 in order to inform all participants. Only minor changes or
precisions on certain fields are expected during activity workshops. The next step is a
technical meeting to be hold next fall in Finland with partners 1 and 10 data-bases
developers and managers. Plans are to prepare a template for the various fields to be
implemented into the data-bases in order not to slow down the data input by
participants.
Activity-N° 3: Geographical Structure of Genetic Diversity of Species - towards the
delineation of adaptive environments and breeding zones at European level
Coordinators: Partner n° 8 (SBS) and n° 17 (NFLI)
Results of the workshop from 29.-30.05.2007 in Järvenpää, Finland
Setting-up of an Expert group
Additional to the three experts already mentioned in the meeting of Orleans (Josefa F. Lopez,
partner n° 24; Philippe Rozenberg, partner n° 1; Bengt Andersson, partner n° 21) and the two
coordinators, Dr. Tore Skrøppa from Norway (to be asked by partner n° 17) and Prof. Dr.
Rainer Finkeldey from Germany (to be asked by partner n° 8) were proposed to complete the
expert group. Tore Skrøppa has now been asked and is willing to be included in the expert
group.
Workshops/seminars/training
During the meeting in Orleans, we planned five workshops related to Act. N° 3. However,
there were some concerns by project coordinator Luc Paques, that the number of workshops
could be too much. After short discussion the partners agreed to:
-
Combine the WS on “Adaptive traits needed for breeding zone delineation” and the WS
on “Plasticity and adaptation”, to be organized in Spain January/February 2008
(responsible partners n° 24, 1 and 23)

Organise the WS on “Seed transfer: what we know?” as small scale event already in
October 2007 near Dresden, Germany (responsible partner n° 8). In front of the WS, clear
terms of references will be sent to the participants (see list of participants in annex).
Set the WS on “Genetic variability and adaptive potential of temperate and boreal forest
tree species” as option for a possible cooperation with EVOLTREE (partner n° 10
responsible to contact EVOLTREE).
Stick to the WS on “The definition of European-wide breeding zones” in November 2009
(responsible partner n° 7).
The project coordinator Luc Paques emphasized that the CA gives the possibility to meet in
small groups to work on a certain topic related to TREEBREEDEX.
Surveys/inventories (reports, database, short-notes)
• Literature (AC2/AC3-AC6)
Each partner should check the EUFORGEN grey literature data base
(http://www.bioversityinternational.org/Networks/Euforgen/Euf_Grey_Literature.asp)
on
missing important information from their specific country. Abstracts should be in English.
Each partner should also look for main reference/review papers in the specific fields and
forward the references until end of 2007 to the coordinators. The first collection will be sent
to Luc.
• Inventory of provenance/progeny/variety trials (AC3, month of delivery 24)
This task is closely related to the existence and functioning of the data-base. However, to start
the work some criteria will be developed by the activity-coordinators by end of June 2007 and
sent to the partners. Partners should indicate their trials until end of the year 2007 to the
activity-coordinators. However, here is an interface to Act n° 5: Identification is responsibility
of Act n°3, inventory is related to Act n° 5.
• List of endangered populations (connected to analysis of databases) (AC3, month of
delivery 30)
The endangered populations should be related to breeding purposes including provenance
trials.
This task is closely related to the existence and functioning of the data-base. However, to start
the work some criteria will be developed by the activity-coordinators by end of September
2007 and sent to the partners. Partners should indicate their endangered populations until end
of March 2008. Again, here is an interface to Act n° 5: Identification is responsibility of Act
n°3, inventory is related to Act n° 5.
• Importance of seed (variety) transfer across Europe based on national information (AC3,
month of delivery 24)
In this survey, the economical transfer of seed / genetic material / forest reproductive material
should be mentioned. The transfer of forest reproductive material transfer in Europe has two
temporal aspects:
5
Treebreedex: a working model network of tree improvement for competitive,
multifunctional and sustainable European forestry
-
-
The transfer of forest reproductive material in the present, which is under the
Council Directive 1999/105/EC of 22, December 1999, about the marketing of
forest reproductive material.
The transfer of forest reproductive material in the past, which produced already
several impacts on the stability, quality and performance of forests in Europe.
Partner n° 22 (Roman Longauer) will take care for the present transfer and will prepare a
paper with preliminary results for the WS organised in October 2007. There should be no
restriction to a certain species. All aspects of transfer (see Oak, see Poplar, see Larch) should
be considered. Since the transfer of forest reproductive material of the past is closely related
to the inventory of successful/unsuccessful cases of variety transfer, partner n° 16 (Sven de
Vries) will take care for this dimension.
• Inventory of successful/unsuccessful cases of variety transfer (AC3, month of delivery 36)
The evaluation will be based on older experiments and practical experiences (partner n° 16,
responsible person: Sven de Vries).
Treebreedex: a working model network of tree improvement for competitive,
multifunctional and sustainable European forestry
6
• National/regional breeding zones & delineation principles (AC3, month of delivery 46)
Jose Climent distributed a proposal of a questionnaire on provenance and breeding zones
during the WS. If not done during the meeting, comments on the draft should be given latest
until end of June 2007. The final questionnaire will be sent by July 2007 to the partners, the
answers are expected until end of October 2007.
State-of-art synthesis (Report, short-note, paper)
The responsible persons (RP) should take care for the elaboration of the synthesis. For their
assistance they should organize a small working group with partners involved in the specific
task. The coordinators will summarize the task and responsibilities in the minutes of this
meeting based on the meetings of Orleans and Järvenpää.

However, there are several species which could be of interest for the elaboration of reviews
some of them belonging to the key species of TREEBREEDEX, some of them were indicated
during the kick-off meeting in Orleans:
Sitka spruce, Betula pendula,
Populus.
Oak, Larix, Douglas fir, Abies alba, Fraxinus, Prunus,
Each participant should think carefully on the overtaking of the leadership for the review for
one of the species mentioned above.

Other documents
• Intellectual property rights, access rules to infrastructures - genetic resources (AC2-4)
During the 2nd meeting 2008 in the Netherlands, access and benefit sharing will be a topic.
An external speaker will be invited. However, Mrs. Johansson from the EC mentioned that
TREEBREEDEX should develop own ideas and thoughts related to the legal aspects of treebreeding research and exchange of genetic material.
• Definition of an optimal methodology for studying genetic diversity of emerging species,
roadmap for a joined study (AC3, month of delivery 36)
Since the process for the identification of emerging species is under the way, the definition of
an optimal methodology will follow the collection of information on emerging species.
During the discussion it was proposed to combine this activity with the related activity in A4.
• Recommendations for seed transfer across Europe (AC3, month of delivery 36)
The recommendations will be the result of the task related to seed transfer and the delineation
of breeding zones and should finally be discussed in the WS in Spain January/February 2008.
• Knowledge gaps, research needs, identification of research topics of common interest
(AC3-4-5-6, month of delivery 40)
This point should be followed up by each partner.
• List of emerging species for breeding (AC3, month of delivery 30)
Josefa Fernandez-Lopez (partner n° 24) presented a paper in which criteria for the selection of
emerging species were proposed (confer paper submitted during the meeting/see also data-file
to be submitted by the end of 2007). During the discussion it was mentioned, that the diversity
of site conditions in southern, central and northern Europe should also be considered in the
selection of species for the list.
Several comments were given on the following species:
Pinus radiata, Eucalypts, Pinus contorta, Pinus nigra, Robinia pseudoacacia.
As result of the discussion, it was proposed that in the beginning the experiences and results
already available of each partner with introduced species should be collected during 2007.
Based on this, Josefa Fernandez-Lopez will prepare a draft of a list by the end of 2007.

Activity 4: Structure, Organisation and Long-Term Management of Forest Breeding
Material
Minutes of the Workshop held in Järvenpää, Finland: 28 – 31 May. 2007
Activity coordinators:
Steve Lee (FC, Partner 11).
Joukje Buiteveld (Alterra, Partner 16)
The meeting was aimed at:
 Re-organizing and clarifying the different tasks within Activity 4;
 Looking at the state of progress within the different tasks which make up Activity 4
 A close look at the milestones to be achieved for the first 18 months of the contract.
The following agenda was proposed, which was structured based on the deliverables for the
second and the third year:
Priority for year 2:
1. Deliverable 4: Outcome of the Zaragoza meeting in Spain – moving forward the ‘Genetic
materials’ database
2. Deliverable 3: Proposed workshop on ‘Long-term genetic improvement’
3. Deliverable 2: Survey of methodological tools
Priority for year 3:
4. Deliverable 6: the need and role of the ‘Expert Group’
5. Deliverable 5: Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) – An outline of what this means
6. Deliverable 5: Survey to find research needs within the consortium
Priority for end of 1st year:
7. End of year requirements
D4: Forest tree breeding populations meta-database: identification of common
material, missing material and endangered material (linked to Task a and d)
Responsible partners for this deliverable are Partner 1 (INRA) and P10 (Metla). On 17 – 18th
April a workshop was organized by P27 (CITA) in Zaragoza (Spain) to define the objectives
and specifications for the database. The outcome of this Zaragoza meeting had already been
presented by P. Vakkari (P10) during the morning of 29th May.
The outcome was discussed briefly without repeating the Zaragoza meeting and the following
comments and additions were made to certain proposed fields and descriptors:




Identification: ‘if progeny’ should be changed in ‘if full-sib progeny’
Identification: ‘single or double pair’ should be added to fixed list of mating plans
Identification: If possible add in free text box ‘other’ to fixed list of mating plans
Identification: add ‘Aleppo pine section’ (Pinus halepensis, P. brutia, P. eldarica) and
Mediterranean firs (Abies alba (of Med. regions), A. cephalonica, A. numidica, A.
Treebreedex: a working model network of tree improvement for competitive,
multifunctional and sustainable European forestry
12


pinsapo, A. equitrojani, A. bornmuelleriana, A. cilicica, A. nordmanniana, A.
nebrodensis) to the fixed list of species
Measurements: list of traits should be compatible with traits list in field trial database
General description: ‘Origin/provenance’ should be changed in ‘Origin’
In September 2007 a technical workshop will be organised by Metla (P10) and attended by
INRA and Metla database specialists to design the structure of the database and discuss the
technical issues for it’s construction. This workshop will be combined with a technical
workshop on the field trial database (Activity 5) as well. A discussion was started when
partners should start gathering the required information to be put in the database. There is no
clear guidance on this. However, it might be wise to start typing the necessary information in
an Excel spreadsheet now if no electronic database is available using the fields/specifications
given on the hand-outs at the meeting. If the data are electronically available you probably
can convert the data into the required format at a later stage (after September).
Actions agreed:
 In September after the technical workshop a format for data input will be ready. This
format will be send around by P. Vakkari (P10).
 After the construction of the database is finalized in June 2008 a pilot test will be done
with data of Scots pine and cherry provided by all partners.
D3
Workshop on ‘Long-term genetic improvement’ (Linked to task e.)
Main responsible partners for this workshop are P1 (INRA) and P9 (RVAU). L. Pâques (P1)
clarified that this actually will be a training session on the long-term management of breeding
populations and not a workshop as described in the previous minutes. It is meant as a practical
training and people who attend the training are encouraged to bring actual data and real
problems.
Actions agreed:
 Luc Pâques (P1) will contact Lars Graudal (P9) to decide between them who will be in
charge of the organization of the training session.
 The training session is planned for the 1st half of 2008. Exact date and place are still to
be decided.
 Proposed contributors to the training session up to now are:
o L. Sanchez (P1): Long-term management of breeding populations (simulations
using as starting point real questions from the group)
o D. Lindgren (P25): Popsim
o D. Danusevicius (P15): Optimisation of breeding cycles for long-term breeding
o L. Graudal (P9) will come with suggestions for the training session, after
consulting his colleague E. Kjær
o P. Mertens (P3): Importance and consequences of species genealogy on
breeding strategies
 Contributors will contact L. Pâques (P1)
 L. Sanchez (P1) will send around an outline of the precise content of this training
session as soon as possible (at least 9 months before the training session).
D2: Optimisation of structure of breeding populations for long-term genetic
improvement: Survey of methodological tools (Linked to task b).
Treebreedex: a working model network of tree improvement for competitive,
multifunctional and sustainable European forestry
13
Patrick Mertens (P3) is the lead partner for this task. He gave a presentation on the
preliminary results from the questionnaire on methodological tools (software, models) for
optimal organization and management of breeding populations which was circulated around
partners earlier this year. The main objectives of this survey are:
 To give an overview of the methods available within the consortium;
 To identify gaps in knowledge and new research needs;
 To exchange methodologies and transfer of knowledge by identifying which partners
have the knowledge, methods and where the needs are;
 To identify new and original programs.
A preliminary report is needed now to have better insight in the outcome of the questionnaire.
We should think up a number of questions to identify if we got all the necessary information
out of this survey. Questions such as ‘How many partners use simulations?’, ‘Who has more
than one generation breeding?’, ‘Who has experience with long-term breeding?’, ‘What is the
size of the breeding populations in each country?’, ‘Where are the gaps of knowledge?’ can
help to analyse the outcome of the survey.
Actions agreed:
 Each partner will think up 2 questions which they would like the data to answer
bearing in mind the objectives of the survey. They should send these questions to the
activity coordinators (P16, P11) before the end of July
 These questions will be consolidated into a list of FAQs by J. Buiteveld (P16) and S.
Lee (P11) and placed on the website before the end of September
 P. Mertens (P3) will prepare a preliminary report on the results of the survey using this
FAQ list for the key species, which can be put on the website (Before 2nd annual
meeting, June 2008).
 P. Mertens will contact the responsible person for the survey on breeding methodology
in Activity 5 to see if there are any gaps in the surveys (before end of December).
D6: Principles for joined long-term management and conservation of breeding
populations including costs benefits (Linked to task d and e)
The need and role of an ‘Expert Group’ was discussed. It is still too early to select an expert
group. After the training session on long-term management of breeding populations has taken
place and the first data in the Genetic materials database have been interrogated we can decide
better on the role and mission of this group.
Action agreed:
 The selection of an expert group will be postponed to the 2nd annual meeting
 There will be a joint expert group for Activity 4 and 5.
D5: Within and outside consortium access rules to networked plant material
collections and related information on gene pools; links with Bonn-guidelines on access
to genetic resources and benefit sharing (ABS). (Linked to task g)
Main responsible partners for this deliverable are Partner 16 (Alterra) and P11 (FC). Joukje
Buiteveld gave a short presentation on the Convention of Biological Diversity and the Bonn
guidelines and the relevance of these instruments for the Treebreedex consortium. For more

information on this topic see www.cbd.int. A questionnaire will be send around Partners to
gather data on national and institutional policy within each country concerning ABS of forest
genetic resources, and their needs concerning Access and Benefit Sharing of plant material.
Actions agreed:
 A workshop on ABS on Forest Genetic Resources will be organized and hosted by
P16 (Joukje Buiteveld) in combination with the 2nd annual meeting in Wageningen,
Netherlands, lasting about half a day. J. Buiteveld will contact L. Pâques regarding
invited speakers from outside TreeBreedEx.
 The workshop can possibly be combined with a workshop on DHS for clonal variety
registration (task f, activity 6). This has still to be decided. J. Buiteveld will contact G.
Douglas (P14) for this.
 J. Buiteveld (P16) and S. Lee (P11) together with H. Wolf (P8) will distribute a
questionnaire to identify needs and expectations with regard to the plant material
collections to all partners (December 2007). Deadline for returns March 2008.
Literature review
Action agreed:
 Each partner is asked to search for grey literature related to topics within Activity 4
(e.g check in EUFORGEN database and select what is relevant for Treebreedex
community). The grey literature should have at least an English summary.
 Each partner should provide a few major papers related to Activity 4.
 The references and grey literature can be sent to the activity coordinators (P16 and
P11). Template for reference list will be provided by L. Paques (P1). The reference list
will be put on the website.

Bart De Cuyper welcomed the participants and gave a brief outline of the objectives of the
workshop and the expected outcome. He expressed the wish that the workshop should result
in clear agreements on the future work plan of Activity 5, in particular with respect to the
multiple surveys, enquiries and questionnaires which are to be circulated in order to achieve
the deliverables. He emphasized the importance of clear decisions on the content of these
questionnaires and on the way and timing of their dissemination. This will avoid redundancy
and allow to cadence these surveys over time.

FUTURE WORK PLAN
In order to structure the debate, it was agreed to go through each of the Tasks, listed in the
“Description of Work”.
Treebreedex: a working model network of tree improvement for competitive,
multifunctional and sustainable European forestry
16
Task a)
Inventory of field experimental trials – creation of a “Genetic Field
Experiments” database
Linked with Deliverable 7
The provisional contours of the Genetic Field Experiments (GFE) database were defined
during the Database Workshop, which was held in Zaragoza (ES), 16-18 April 2007 as a
number of both mandatory and optional descriptors were then selected (Annex 1). These
descriptors were presented for discussion during the Activity 5 workshop in order to reach a
final consensus on the fields to be included:
 Additional field: “Keywords” referring to special features of the trial (e.g. multispecies trial). In order to compile a standardized list, each partner is to provide Partner
10 with keywords of proper interest
 “Test Location details”
- “Soil type”: use of the “Ecopedological Map of Europe”. An optional field
will be added for providing more detailed information
- “Climate”: use of the “Worldclim Model”
 “Test Composition”
- Additional field: “Year 0”, i.e. year of propagation
- Replace “Spacing” by “Initial spacing”
- Additional field: “Actual number of plants per ha”, which will provide
information on the intensity of past thinnings
- Replace “Number of blocks” by “Number of repetitions”
- Replace “Type of plots” by “Number of plants per plot” (e.g. a number of
plants/plot = 1 indicates single tree plots)
- “Type of traits assessed” : add “Survival” – “Flowering” – “Gender”
According to the “Description of Work” data input should be started in June 2008. However,
as a final consensus on the mandatory and optional fields was reached during the workshop,
participants were encouraged to start gathering the necessary information, especially when
these are not yet available in digitalized format.
By analogy with the Genetic Material (GM) database, it was decided that, in a first phase,
only information on two tree species should be entered in the database, viz Scots pine and
Wild cherry. This will allow to detect flaws in the databases and to test the link between the
two databases.
The technical aspects of the construction of the database (a.o. format of data input) will be
discussed by the responsible partners (i.e. Partner 10 for the GFE database en Partner 1 for the
GM database) during a workshop which will be organized in September 2007.
Task b)
Inventory of experimental facilities and tools and definition of access rules
Linked with Deliverable 2

Activity No. 6 Optimisation of improved variety mass- production and deployment in
forests.
Minutes of the Workshop held in Järvenpää, Finland, 29-31 May 2007
Activity Co-ordinators:
G. Douglas (Teagasc Partner 14) & B. Heinze (BFW Partner 14)
Introduction
Activity No 6 is an important contact point on all aspects concerned with mass
propagation of improved genetic material of forest trees. Its aim is to bring together
knowledge and information as well as the networking of European Scientists who are
involved in:
a) Production of improved genetic resources of forest trees
b) The mass production and propagation of forest reproductive materials via seeds and
vegetative propagation
c) The deployment or utilization of improved material in different forest scenarios.
The meeting reviewed all of the tasks in activity 6 and concentrated on work for the period of
months 0-24 for the Deliverables ( D1- 4 ). An overview of Deliverables 5- 8 was also
discussed and preparations were begun.
D 1: Website discussion forum
An explanation on technical options was given: e-mail distribution list, web page forum one-way communication with links to all kinds of documents are possible, and a discussion
group through the web (by Luc Paques). The "ListServer" way of communication was
introduced, and its advantages pointed out.
Actions agreed :
Gerry Douglas to initiate a ListServer group and to inform the partners when it is
operational.
D 2: Expert group on mass propagation (by seed and vegetative means)
A list was prepared at the previous Orleans meeting to include all of those with a strong
interest in various aspects of mass propagation as well as those interested in promoting the
uptake and deployment of improved materials.
Actions agreed :
The updated list below will be forwarded to Luc Paques by Gerry Douglas, to be put onto
the web page where the list will be mentioned in the open section. The names will only be
available in the intranet section. The updated list is below.

D 3: Catalogue of web – links
This task is to identify and create links to partner institutions, relevant pages of these
institutions and contact persons for the national data bases of forest reproductive materials as
well as the national regulations.
Elena Foffova presented results of her survey: it was sent to one person per country /
participant. She explained the content of the survey to be filled by each partner country, i.e.
government structure responsible, the official body for FRM, the UPOV contact person
(national representative), other national organisations. For each of these the contact details are
provided as well as links to national and international reports. Eight responses were received
24
Treebreedex: a working model network of tree improvement for competitive,
multifunctional and sustainable European forestry
so far, participants were asked to complete the survey, or to identify an appropriate person.
Data protection was an issue for some countries.
Actions agreed :
Elena Foffova to repeat sending questionnaires and to finish the survey by the end of 2007 Fulvio Ducci agreed to prepare a summary of national regulations regarding the trading and
deployment of varieties.
D 4: Workshops on methods for mass-propagation:
Seed Orchards:
This task includes many possibilities to summarise available information by compiling stateof-the-art papers and through conferences and workshops. A relevant meeting on "Application
of DNA based tools for genetic research, molecular breeding, management and monitoring of
genetic resources" is arranged for 24-25 Sep at Umeå, organised by GENECAR – the
Nordic group for forest genetics organised by Oystein Johnsen, - details at:
http://www.skogkurs.no/genecar/index.asp
The programme for the Seed orchard conference was presented by Dag Lindgren, the
organiser, it will take place on 26-28 Sep 2007, in combination with a PhD thesis defence at
Umeå, Sweden – see:http://wwwgenfys.slu.se/staff/dagl/Umea07/Umea07.htm
This
conference will be on genetics and all other aspects of seed orchards; oral presentations and
posters are invited. Offers of 35 oral presentations were received comprising several world
authorities. Contributors will be from the Nordic countries as well as Spain, Poland, Greece,
Croatia & Turkey The deadline, for posters is 1 Sep 2007. Registration is possible until 1 Aug
(later with a small extra charge).
Seed orchards are an important means to deliver improved genetic material in the form of
seeds. The conference will cover many scientific and technical aspects of seed orchards in
relation to establishment, management and optimal functioning. These aspects and others and
will be made available within Treebreedex in summary form, as well as proceedings which
will be electronically published.
Actions agreed :
Several aspects of seed orchards are relevant to Treebreedex and could be best made
available to a wider audience on the web site by the provision of summary reports. The
following people indicated that they would be attending the Seed Orchard Conference:
Roman Longauer, Veronica Codesido, Johan Westin, Wladislaw Chalupka, Alfas
Pilura, Oystein Johnsen, Gerry Douglas, Berthold Heinze. They will be invited by the
Activity coordinators to take summary notes of specific aspects at the conference and to
deliver short reports (state of the art notes) by 31 Oct 2007 to the Activity coordinators.
Vegetative propagation:
A workshop to review the methodologies for mass propagation by vegetative means was
previously proposed but was postponed at this meeting due to the absence of many of the
Treebreedex: a working model network of tree improvement for competitive,
multifunctional and sustainable European forestry
25
people who originally proposed this idea. The content and focus of such a workshop is open
for more suggestions.
Actions agreed :
David Thompson and the Activity coordinators will renew contacts with interested people
such as M Lelu-Walter, M.Verger, G. Douglas, and others to continue efforts to organise such
a workshop. Steve Lee expressed interest in addressing the matter of deployment and
adoption of new technologies as well as aspects of promoting improved genetic material. He
offered to host a workshop dealing with vegetative propagation in conjunction with Delamere
nurseries near Manchester (UK) in early 2009.
D 5: Guidelines to facilitate the standardisation of new varieties for Distinctiveness
Homogeneity and stability (DHS)
The purpose of this task is to make available relevant information on procedures and criteria
in the form of guidelines which will facilitate the registration of new clonal varieties and their
commercial protection. UPOV ( www.upov.int ) and CPVO websites have some information.
Personal contacts by Gerry Douglas were established with CPVO and downloads on notes for
applications are available at: http://www.cpvo.europa.eu/index.php. Some varieties are
already waiting for to be registered. Josefina Fernandez is in the process of registering sweet
chestnut (Castanea sativa) varieties (possibly also wild cherry clones) with the specific
purpose of timber production, using the criteria for DUS tests (distinctness, uniformity,
stability) established in UPOV documents for fruit-bearing varieties, to be complemented by
descriptors for stem form, wood quality etc.. Sven de Vries pointed out the difference between
registration and protection for breeders rights. Registration is needed for EU marketing. The
UPOV bureau at Angers (France) is to be contacted for EU-wide protection of breeders rights.
An old example of Dutch Prunus avium clones was given, they were judged using fruit
variety protocols. In principle, seed varieties could also be registered, but there are no
examples yet because of difficulties in describing the distinctness of the material.
Actions agreed :
Jean Dufour and Gerry Douglas to continue to collect information on procedures and to
contact CPVO on specific points.
Gerry Douglas will discuss with Sven de Vries (Ac 4) and others on the possibilities to
explore this topic in conjunction with the topic of ‘Access to genetic resources and benefit
sharing (ABS)’, perhaps as part of a workshop or plenary meeting workshop.
D 6: Review of methodology for mass production and quality control measures to produce
improved forest reproductive material: Identification of bottlenecks, knowledge gaps and
research needs"
A discussion was initiated on the details needed for Deliverables 6- 8, which are due towards
the end of the project ( months 36-46). Deliverable No. 6 is to explore factors affecting the
scheduled production of plants from improved seeds and also from stock plants by vegetative
propagation. The methods used to ensure quality control in seed orchards and in the chain of
vegetative propagation will also be examined. A further matter is to identify bottlenecks
Treebreedex: a working model network of tree improvement for competitive,
multifunctional and sustainable European forestry
26
which delay the utilisation of improved genetic stocks. It is necessary to generate a closer
association between the researchers who produce the materials, and end-users (seed dealers,
nurserymen, forest managers, and policy makers) who influence their deployment. Luc
Paques emphasised the need to identify the chain of production which is used in each country
from the research breeder, through the nurseries, to the forest tree planter. This will help to
identify points and means where the uptake of improved material can be hindered or can be
stimulated.
Deliverables may comprise reports, workshops, a tentative list of joint projects to be
launched, and synthesis papers (monographs).
Actions agreed :
All partners are invited to contribute to this deliverable. The lead partners are Berthold
Heinze and Gerry Douglas (activity coordinators), to be assisted by partners 1 (INRA), 9 (
DK J. Hansen , specifically on larch), 13 (D. Thompson), 17 (Oystein Johnsen), 23 J.
Climent, and 25 ( D. Lindgren).
Gerry Douglas in collaboration with Luc Paques to develop a survey to find out the chain of
production of improved materials in each country as well as the potential bottleneck points
and conditions which facilitate or hinder uptake. In addition, activity coordinators will contact
people on the list of experts individually and try to establish with them a workplan for other
aspects of this deliverable.
D 7: Evaluation and guidelines for the optimal deployment and utilisation of improved forest
reproductive material in relation to their scientific and technical aspects, biodiversity and
ecosystems as well as concerns of society
This item is a challenge to ensure that there is a better appreciation of the economic and
ecological value and functions of improved genetic materials. This can best be achieved by a
closer consultation between breeders and stakeholders in the forest wood chain. The value of
improved genetic material need to be promoted with specific regard to its value for ecologists,
pathologists and silviculturists.
Actions agreed :
All partners are invited to contribute to this deliverable. Lead partners are 2 & 14 (the activity
coordinators), to be assisted by partner No 8 ( H. Wolf and colleagues). In addition, Patrick
Mertens will assist with the specific poplar example. Several aspects will be covered by
reports from workshops and conferences (Umea / seed orchards), Manchester meeting /
deployment, Wageningen 2008 / legal aspects to be specified / vegetative propagation. The
proposed joint meeting of Treebreedex with the project Evoltree will deal with aspects on
biodiversity, ecosystems, and the concerns of society
D 8: Assessment of the quality and productivity potential of improved materials: inventory of
existing trials; survey of literature and available results, roadmap for construction of new
evaluation field trials networks
This subject considers existing trials and comparisons with improved material (demonstration
plots). It also offers the possibility to initiate collaborations on new collaborative trials. It will
comprise web links, a list of trials (or reference to such trials in the TBX database). The
Treebreedex: a working model network of tree improvement for competitive,
multifunctional and sustainable European forestry
27
suggestion was made to collect relevant data on existing trials and available results, as well as
key elements for new networks of field evaluation trials during 2008, to review it in 2009, and
to produce a final document to be ready in 2010.
Actions agreed :
All partners are invited to contribute to this deliverable. The activity coordinators will
contact people on the list of experts individually and try to establish with them a workplan
for deliverables D6-D8 for years 3 and 4 of the project, so that it can be implemented starting
before and during the next annual meeting in 2008.
Key Literature on production and propagation of improved genetic materials:
It will be very useful to have all of the key literature made available within Treebreedex on
the topic of mass production and deployment of improved genetic material. This should
include any grey literature published in English, or with a summary in English. Especially
important will be reviews on species, propagation methods and all other related aspects.
Actions agreed :
The activity coordinators Berthold Heinze berthold.heinze@bfw.gv.at and Gerry Douglas (
Gerry.Douglas@teagasc.ie ) now invite all partners to send us references to such key and
grey literature which deals with all aspects of the production and propagation of improved
genetic materials. A template will be prepared by Luc Paques (including data on availability).
Activity coordinators will then forward a first set of entries to Luc Paques by the end of
2007, they will then be included on the Treebreedex website as a significant resource.
