P-6, Novice Proficiency, High School, U.S. History Classroom Procedures P-6(1): This procedure for entering the classroom provides students with a structured routine for this moment of class time. Taken together with the other listed procedures, though, they neglect some key procedures and do not constitute a core set of inefficiencies. (N) P-6(2): This procedure for entering the classroom is likely to enable the class to run more smoothly. (BP) Entering the Classroom Enter classroom before 2nd bell. Go to desk. Take out notebook and get ready for lesson. P-6(1): This procedure for turning in work provides students with a structured routine for this moment of class time. Taken together with the other listed procedures, though, they neglect some key procedures and do not constitute a core set of inefficiencies. (N) P-6(2): This procedure for turning in work is not likely to enable the class to run more smoothly because every student will be attempting to pass work in simultaneously. (N) Turning in Homework/Classwork When you leave the classroom, there are two tubs by the door. Put your homework in the labeled homework tub. Put your class work in the labeled class work tub. P-6(1): This procedure for turning in work provides students with a structured routine for this moment of class time. Taken together with the other listed procedures, though, they neglect some key procedures and do not constitute a core set of inefficiencies. (N) P-6(2): This procedure for test taking is likely to enable the class to run more smoothly when there is a test. (BP) Taking Tests Make sure you bring 2 pencils to a test day in case one breaks. Put all backpacks, notebooks, etc. under your desk. Turn your desk so you are not able to see any other students’ work. (Face away from your neighbors.) Make sure you have a book under your desk in case you finish early. Listen carefully to all directions. Take the test, silently and without looking up. If you need help, raise your hand. When you are finished, raise your hand and I’ll come get your test. You can read your book until everyone’s done. Going to the Bathroom P-6(1): This procedure for going to the bathroom provides students with a structured routine for this moment of class time. Taken together with the other listed procedures, though, they neglect some key procedures and do not constitute a core set of inefficiencies. (N) P-6(2): This procedure for going to the bathroom is not likely to enable the class to run more smoothly. This procedure requires the teacher to walk over to the student, talk to student, go back to the desk to get pass, and go back to the student. (N) Go to the bathroom during passing time. You have 3 extra bathroom passes per year. I will keep them in my desk, labeled with your name. If you want to use one of the 3, raise your hand and I will come over. Tell me that you need an extra pass and I’ll get it for you from my desk. You will have 5 minutes to go to the bathroom and return to class. Once your 3 extra bathroom passes have been used, you will not be given any others without a doctor’s note. Plan to Introduce Turning in Classwork/Homework Procedure P-6(3): The opening here only considers one of the procedures and does not prepare students to learn about each procedure. (N) OPENING In order to save time, we will turn in all assignments – both classwork and homework – at the end of class. This will ensure that we’re not wasting time turning in papers twice during one lesson. We will have a procedure for turning in classwork/homework, and we will learn it now. INTRO TO NEW MATERIAL P-6(3): The introduction to new material here only considers one of the procedures and does not allow students to learn about each procedure. (N) I will show students the spot where the class work and homework boxes will be. I will tell them that when class is over they will pass in their homework and class work to the two separate boxes by the door. I will tell them that they need to do this quickly and quietly or else they’ll be late for their next class. P-6(3): The practice here only considers practicing one of the procedures and does not give students the opportunity to practice and master each procedure. (N) PRACTICE P-6(3): Although the plan asks students to practice the procedure, it does not “clearly” introduce the procedure because the students must imagine the homework and class work boxes. As a result, there is no authentic practice. (N) I will ask students questions about the procedure that I explained above. I will tell them that even though they don’t have homework or classwork yet, that they need to get up to practice walking over to the door and putting the papers into the boxes. I will tell them to pretend that they have a piece of paper in their hands, and also to pretend that there are 5 different colored sets of boxes (one for each period) instead of just the 2 brown cardboard boxes. (I will get the boxes once each class decides what they want their “team color” to be.) CLOSING I will lead a class vote so that the class can pick a “team color” and I can buy the homework/classwork boxes. I will remind them that they need to do the procedure quickly so as to be on time to their next class.
