Fairfield’s The Greenwich Workshop Gallery to Present TRIO: The First
Original Art Work Show of James C. Christensen and Daughters Cassandra
Barney and Emily McPhie
Only local showing of noted American family of artists brings eclectic styles; chance to meet the
artists on October 20
Fairfield, CT, September 17, 2007 – The Greenwich Workshop Gallery is bringing to Fairfield an
original art show unlike any other – TRIO. Renowned artist James C. Christensen and his talented
daughters, Cassandra Barney and Emily McPhie, will be on hand from 6:00 – 9:00 pm at The
Greenwich Workshop Gallery, 1657 Post Road, Fairfield, on Saturday, October 20. The remarkably
artistic family will give a presentation at 7:00 pm, so if you love fine art, the opportunity to meet this
father-and-daughters trio is one you absolutely will not want to miss. Each visitor to the Trio show
will receive their very own trio of miniature prints, personally signed at the show by Jim, Cassandra
and Emily.
Inspired by the world's myths, fables and tales of imagination, James C. Christensen wants his work
to add up to more than a beautiful – if sometimes "curious" – oeuvre. Having taught art at a
university for over 20 years, he likes to think of the world as his classroom. His hope is that through
whatever he creates, whether it is a painting, bronze, or book, he can convey a message, inspiration or
a simple laugh. He believes that teaching people to use their imagination helps us find solutions to
soothe the stresses of everyday life—or get a little lift to help us keep going. In short: all things are
possible when you share Christensen's philosophy that "Believing is Seeing."
Barney and McPhie were inspired by their world-famous father to experiment with their own styles,
media, interpretation, colors, surfaces and textures, and, as a result, have created works full of
imagery and emotion—wonderful journeys of transition and discovery.
Cassandra Barney’s art work stands in a genre all her own. Her portraits of women both charm and
entice the viewer and provide a window to a feminine mystique. Ambiguous and poignant, Barney’s
images capture the souls of heroines, everyday women who have found strength and personal victory
in their femininity and diverse experiences. “My portraits may not always feature the outwardly
pretty or majestic, but they all share a quiet beauty that asks us to listen and to feel,” says Barney.
“My intent as an artist is to create an experience that will allow the viewers to bring new
interpretations to the symbols, creating their own narrative and own sense of understanding and
place,” she adds.
As a child, Emily McPhie toured the museums of the United States and Europe with her family. At
each museum, McPhie and her brothers and sisters were told they could choose a postcard as a
souvenir, and young Emily's postcard collection quickly filled with early American portraits and
Degas' studies of young dancers. The influence of these museum trips is apparent in Emily's portfolio
of paintings. Because of the strong family influence early in Emily’s life, her paintings focus on
children and her self-perceived role of a woman’s ability to bring balance to her life through family
and her faith.
