Rare breeds

Why do our traditional native farm animals become endangered? The old breeds are simply not economically viable to fulfil the demand of our ever increasing population. New animals are genetically being bred all the time to create larger, fitter animals that produce more milk, more wool and more eggs and carry more meat to feed our increasing population on the planet. Our rare breeds can’t compete with these customised modern breeds and are no longer required for food production. This means that the rare breeds are quickly disappearing from our countryside.

Fortunately there are some dedicated breeders who are keeping the breeds alive. Rare breeds are also being used for conservation grazing, maintaining unique British grasslands and woodlands for wildlife and low intensity farming. However with extremely low numbers and populations sometimes limited to a small geographic area these rare breeds remain at risk of extinction.

You can help us to support rare and traditional British breeds and supporting the work of the Farm by sponsoring our breeding programme making sure that these wonderful animals will be around for many generations to admire. To date more than 20 breeds of British farm animals have become extinct. Once a breed is extinct it can never be brought back into the world.

At Freightliners, we keep a selection of rare breed animals on the farm like Bagot goats (which are endangered with less than 200 breeding females), and White Faced

Woodland Sheep (a vulnerable breed with less than 900 breeding females), as well as Portland sheep and Golden

Guernsey goats which are on the Rare Breeds Survival

Trust watch list.

About Adopt an Animal

You can become a special friend of one of the animals at the farm. Olivia the cow, Fudge and Toffee the sheep and

Princess the rabbit all need a sponsor.

If you choose to adopt an animal your contribution will be used to contribute to the costs of the animals feed, their housing and care.

When you adopt the animal it means you can come to the farm any time we are open and visit your animal.

Everyone has their favourite animal, make your choice from the list opposite and become their best friend for one year!

If you become a sponsor you will receive:-

A Certificate with a photo

Information Pack.

Email information about events on the farm if you choose

N.B - The Sponsor does not own the animal. All decisions about the animal are made by the farm.

Freightliners is a working farm and our animals have to earn their keep!

Remember that the animal you choose may eventually have to be replaced by younger stock.

Only one set of information will be sent but it can be addressed to several people so brothers and sisters can share an animal.j
