5600-PM-BMP0321-10 3/2012 Module 10: Geology Information Instructions: Information submitted under this Module must be certified by a licensed professional geologist. 10.1 Stratigraphy a. Coal vein(s) to be mined (e.g. Mammoth). b. Method of identifying coal seams (e.g. published map, adjacent mining, etc.) c. Coal vein thickness total sulfur content. d. Roof rock thickness total sulfur content. e. Floor rock thickness total sulfur content. f. . Describe the rock units overlying the permit area. g. Describe the rock units underlying the permit area. 10.2 Structure a. Describe the local geologic structure and its relationship to the regional structure. Use diagrams and regional structural relief maps where applicable. b. Describe folding as it applies to this site: Strike of fold axis. Plunge of fold axis. Location in relation to proposed mining site. c. Attitude of bed rock including coal: Unit Name Strike Dip 10.3 Attitude and Characteristics of Joints, Faults, Fractures, or Other Linear Structural Features Strike Dip Characteristics 10.4 Geologic Cross Sections a. Provide geologic cross sections describing the geology within the proposed permit and adjacent area down to and including the aquifer system or existing deep mine that may be affected by the proposed operation. The cross sections, from old colliery maps, geological maps, geological reports, and test borings, shall be constructed as necessary to provide appropriate details. b. Provide Geologic Logs of all test holes or outcrop sections on Module 10.1(B) "Geologic Log/Drill Holes or Outcrop Sections” used to construct the geologic cross sections. Log description must include the actual surveyed surface elevation of each hole, bottom of coal elevation, water conditions (static water level and levels where water was encountered), and a lithologic description and thickness of each strata encountered. 10 - 1 5600-PM-BMP0321-10 c. 3/2012 Show the trace of all geologic sections lines and related test boring and outcrop locations on the Environmental resource Map in Module 14. d. Horizontal scale shall not be smaller than the scale of the Environmental Resource Map, Module 14 (i.e. not less than 1 inch: 400 feet, or 1 inch: 200 feet), larger scales are acceptable (e.g. 1 inch: 100 feet); vertical exaggeration must be adequate for the purpose served and not excessive. Cross sections should extend across the entire proposed underground permit area. There should be a minimum of one crosssection approximately parallel to the strike and one cross-section perpendicular to strike every 1,500 feet, and should be referenced on the Environmental Resource Map, Module 14. The cross-sections should contain the following information: i. Premining surface configuration; ii. All geologic strata (labeled); iii. All coal veins (labeled); iv. Strike and dip of coal seam to be mined; v. Major aquifers; vi. Groundwater table or mine pool elevations and directions of mine pool/groundwater movement; vii. Geologic faults; viii. Abandoned surface or deep mines that will be intercepted by the proposed mine; ix. Drill holes, monitoring wells and water supplies; x. Sources of information used to construct the cross-section. 10.5 Overburden Analysis. a. Request for Waiver of Overburden Analysis. Yes No If yes, include a narrative explanation and documentation supporting the basis for the waiver. b. Typically the Department will grant waivers if the proposed permit area meets any of the following criteria. i. There is previous mining history in the watershed or adjacent areas documenting associated postmining water quality. ii. Lies outside area draining to a High Quality, Exceptional Value, Wilderness Trout Stream or other stream sensitive to mining impact. iii. Is not in close proximity to a public water supply. iv. There is no indication of acid or elevated metals from the same coal vein(s) on adjacent mines. v. Removal of alkaline material is not proposed. Note: Prior to initiation of any overburden analysis, contact the Pottsville District Mining Office concerning the submission. 10 - 2 5600-PM-BMP0321-10 3/2012 10.6 Surface Mines and Coal Refuse Disposal Areas Submit the following information on all active, completed and abandoned surface mines and coal refuse disposal sites which lie within 1,000 feet of the permit area.
