Lecture outline Overview of excretory system Dr. RAIS AHMED ASSOCITE PROFESSOR SMC JSMU Learning Objectives and study guide line • At the end of the module, students should be able to: • Know the different parts of excretory system. • Know the general overview of these excretory parts. Introduction • Understand the structure of kidney – Welcome to the “excretory system Module”. It is a relatively short module. Excretory system of human body is the vital base of life. – Renal diseases are a major cause of morbidity and mortality globally as well as in Pakistan and third word. . – Apart from these major effects, recurrent and chronic excretory system problems result in a significant loss of productivity and working hours in our country. In this background, – it is important to understand about excretory system. – During this module the students will study normal structure and function of Excretory System in adults and children. – The emphasis should be on active learning and self-study by the student, using the Excretory System module study guide. – A list of suggested reading material is in your study guide hand book and we suggest use of internet and other supplementary aids where necessary to augment your knowledge. – Teaching of this module will be in the form of lectures, tutorials, problem based learning, practicals and teacher-student seminars. There will also be sessions in the skills laboratory, which will help you master hands-onskills, which will be essential in the diagnosis and management of Excretory System diseases and emergencies. – The stress will be on application of knowledge. – At the end of this term, you will have an internal evaluation of the studies that have been taught during this module. – There will also be a summative assessment at the end of the second semester. The objectives of this module are listed below. At the end of the module, you should check if all or most of these objectives have been achieved Context: • • You have enough background knowledge of Excretory System during your pre medical biological course. The foundation module has provided the introduction of different body systems. • This module of spiral-I, semester-II will provide you detailed integrated knowledge and its application. This will help you in relevant course of spiral-II and III. Rational: The Excretory System is divided into the excretory system and collecting system. Both perform important functions. The excretory system is for formation and concentration of urine – The collecting tract is responsible for collection of urine and excretion out side the body. – The students will encounter with edema, protienurea stone formation in clinical practice patients. – The students during clinical teaching and training will come across different types of renal problems. Renal diseases are on the rise in Pakistan due to increasing pollution and increasing prevalence of diabetes and hypertension. . – A firm understanding of the excretory system will enable the student to help prevent such diseases through spreading relevant health education messages Organisation of the Excretory System • Kidneys • Ureters • Urinary bladder • Urethra Urogenital/ Excretory System Functions • Filtering of blood, Removal of wastes and metabolites • • Regulation of • – blood volume and composition • – concentration of blood solutes • – pH of extracellular fluid • – blood cell synthesis • • Synthesis of Vitamin D • • Reproduction and sexual function
