Ballyheada Green-Schools Programme in action! Paper Notes / Letters to Parents Notes are given to the eldest child in each family. We try to include as many messages on each sheet of paper as possible. We text-a-parent with messages, where possible. Noticeboards are used to circulate staff information. Worksheets We use double sided photocopying whenever possible. Scrap paper These are kept in each classroom and used for drawing, cutting activities, etc. Very small scraps of paper are used in our wormery to make compost. Junk mail and leaflets These are shredded and used as bedding for horses. Books / Novels Some books and novels are bought by the school and rented / loaned to pupils to cut down on money costs for parents. Plastic Plastic bags All pupils bring their lunch in a lunch box. Sandwich bags and tin foil are not encouraged. Packaging Many items are bought in bulk to minimise packaging waste (stationery, toiletries, cleaning products, A4 paper, etc.) Tubs and jars We reuse empty butter tubs, sweet jars and biscuit tins for storage and empty chocolate tins are used to collect pencil parings for wormery in each room. 1 Glass jars Food Waste Other Recyclable Items We reuse glass jars for art / water containers and for storage to hold paint brushes, etc. A compost bin in the staff room is used to collect all banana skins, apple cores, orange peels, tea bags, etc. for the wormery. This compost will be used to grow plants and vegetables in our school garden. A compost bin is located in all classrooms for pencil parings, tissues, small scraps of paper. Each day members of the Green Team collect paper scraps from all rooms for the wormery. Art and Craft materials We collect waste items such as cereal boxes, newspapers, tubs, kitchen rolls, etc. for Art and Craft activities. Shoe boxes Shoe boxes are reused for our annual ‘Team Hope – Christmas Child Appeal’. 2
