V.P. Franklin and Felix Armfield
2009 Essay Contest Co-Chairs
The Association for the Study of African American Life and History
(ASALH) proudly announces its nineteenth annual essay contest for
undergraduate and graduate students.
Essays may be submitted on any topic that explores the lives, history or
cultures of African descended people in North America, South America,
the Caribbean, or throughout the African Diaspora. A research
approach is required; papers that are only polemical and offer only
personal opinions will not be accepted.
Essays should site the appropriate primary and secondary sources related
to the topic under examination using endnotes and the citation style
found in The Journal of African American History, which uses The
Chicago Manual of Style, 15th edition (2003)
Essays will be judged by members of the ASALH Essay Contest Committee on the
basis of clarity, organization, originality, and documentation.

In addition to the monetary award, the Graduate Winner’s essay will be published
