Franklin and Felix Armfield 2009 Essay Contest Co-Chairs The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) proudly announces its nineteenth annual essay contest for undergraduate and graduate students. Essays may be submitted on any topic that explores the lives, history or cultures of African descended people in North America, South America, the Caribbean, or throughout the African Diaspora. A research approach is required; papers that are only polemical and offer only personal opinions will not be accepted. Essays should site the appropriate primary and secondary sources related to the topic under examination using endnotes and the citation style found in The Journal of African American History, which uses The Chicago Manual of Style, 15th edition (2003) Essays will be judged by members of the ASALH Essay Contest Committee on the basis of clarity, organization, originality, and documentation. D:\106735901.doc 2/15/2016 9:43:13 PM Each winner will be awarded $500 and have the opportunity to present their essay at the 94th annual ASALH convention in Cincinnati, Ohio, September 30October 4, 2009. In addition to the monetary award, the Graduate Winner’s essay will be published in an upcoming issue of The Journal of African American History (JAAH). In preparing graduate student essays for submission back issues of the JAAH should be consulted. Efforts will be made to find a suitable publication for the winning undergraduate essay.
