Mrs. Irene Antrobus, 89, widow of William H. Antrobus, died at 9:30 p.m. Thursday at Villa Terrace Convalescent Home where she had been a patient one year.
Before entering the nursing home, she had lived at Alton Womans Home for 10 years. A daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Coates, she was born Sept. 1,
1876, in Greene County. She was married to William H. Antrobus Nov. 22, 1895, at Carrollton. Her husband died in July of 1955. Mrs. Antrobus, who had lived in
Alton since 1923, was a member of North Alton Southern Baptist Church. Survivors are four daughters, Mrs. Louis Ressler, Chandler Ariz., Mrs. Edith Cox, East
St. Louis; Mrs. Lucy Clawson, Overland, MO., and Mrs. Ruth Brown, Piasa Chautauqua; three sons, Raymond E., Millican Tex., Louis H., East Alton, and Harry,
Flint, Mich. There are 24 grandchildren, 44 great and 12 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers,
seven sisters, and two sons.
The Rev. Kenneth Marshall will officiate at funeral services Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in Smith Funeral Home, Alton. Burial will be in Jalappa Cemetery, near Kane.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. Fri.

RALPH COATES, FORMERLY OF AREA, DIES IN MISSOURI.
White Hall—William Ralph Coates, 71 of Marshall, Mo., formerly of the White Hall area, died 10 a.m. Tuesday at Memorial Hospital in Sedalia, Mo. He was born
July 13, 1910 in Kane, son of Asa and Martha Ellen Scoggins Coates. He married Ruth Manley Dec. 6, 1938 in St. Louis, Mo. and she survives.
Also surviving are one son, William D. Coates of Carrollton and two daughters Jacquelyn Frances Camp of Alton and Judith Ellen King of Marshall, Mo. There
are 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Marshall and was maintenance supervisor of Marshall
Fitzgibbons Hospital. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall. Interment will be in White Hall Cemetery. Friends may call

Carrollton—Ruth Coates, 82, of Jerseyville and formerly of White Hall, died Monday morning, Dec. 29, 1997, in Sedalia, Mo.
She was born Sept. 19, 1915, in White Hall, the daughter of James A. and Margaret Banker Manley. She married Ralph Coates on Dec. 6, 1938, in St. Louis,
Mo., and he preceded her in death on Aug. 25, 1981.
She is survived by one son, William (wife, Alinda) of Carrollton; two daughters, Jackie (husband, Ed) Kamp of Rosewood Heights, Judy King of Marshall, Mo: 11
grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by on son, Jimmy; one grandson; six sister, Stella Manley, Verda Dean, Fairy Sweetin,
Lucy Murray, Mabel Hagan and Louise Young.
Mrs. Coates was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in White Hall.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton with burial at White Hall City cemetery. Visitation will be from 11
a.m. until time of services Friday, Memorials are suggested to the Carrollton First Baptist Church--Possibly from Jacksonville Journal Courier, Jacksonville, IL.

Davis died 1 Dec 1864 and is buried in Salem Cem., Ottercreek Twp., Jersey Co., IL.. She was born about 1800 in Kentucky. Her husband John Davis was born
4 Jan 1796 in Madison Co., KY and died 3 Dec 1877 in Jersey Co., IL. Their two youngest daughters, Susan and Hester, married men by the surnames of

1830 Greene Co., IL census -- page 41 -- Household #15 (taken Nov 27, 1830) shows John age 30-40, Sarah age 20-30, 1 female 5-10 yrs old and 2 females
under 5. (I have further information on two of their children).
They are living next door to brother Richard Davis & only 3 households from a Richard Antribuss age 20-30, 3 houses more from Jacob Antribuss age 20-30. I

BROWN, GEORGE, agriculturist. The growth and development of the prosperous county of Greene, is largely due to that restless energetic people known as
Kentuckians; among this people George Brown was born in 1801. While a youth he wended his way to Franklin County, Mo., where at the early age of
nineteen, he was married to Miss Elizabeth Antrobus, and the following year hearing many glowing accounts of the fertility of Illinois, he made his way thither,
where he found but few inhabitants, as but few then had the hardihood to venture to the wilds of Illinois, save a few daring spirits in search of new scenes and
incidents. Building a cabin near the present Munday estate, he prepared to battle for an existence in Illinois, at a time when such kindred spirits as Samuel
Thomas, Peter Cartwright and others were among the principal settlers. We cannot owing to limited space, follow in detail the progress of Mr. Brown in his career
in Southern Ilinois. Many years after his marriage, about the year 1847, Mrs. Brown died, leaving to the care of her husband, ten children. Mr. Brown survived
his wife many years, passing to a home not made with hands in 1872. One thing in the life history of Mr. B. is somewhat remarkable, living in an age when horse
racing, drinking and carousing was the order of the day, he held himself aloof from the prevalent vices of the times, and was much respected for his Christian
character; and when the gray light of morning beamed upon his pathway, beckoning him onward to a brighter and better and, he obeyed the summons for the
Great Unknown with true Christian fortitude.

William Lester Antrobus, age 41, of 2817 North Street, died this morning at 8:30 after an illness beginning last Nov. 28. An electrician, Antrobus was last
employed on the dam project.
Born June 12, 1895 in Greene county, he lived with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William H. Antrobus, moving to Jerseyville where he resided previous to coming to
Alton about 20 years ago. Surviving Antrobus are his wife, Alvernon, one daughter, Irene, his mother and father. Four sisters Edith Antrobus, Mrs. George
Ressler of Williamsville, Ill., Mrs. Homer Clawson and Mrs. George Monroe of Alton. Three brothers, Harry and Louis of Alton and Ray of Texas.
Funeral Services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at two o'clock at the Christian Church in Kane, Ill., with burial in the Japalla [sic] cemetery in Greene
county. The body may be viewed after 10 o'clock Friday morning at Streeper's Funeral Home. Previous to the cortege moving to Kane, brief services will be
conducted at the funeral home. Antrobus, while residing in Jerseyville, was a member of the Baptist church.

Obituary: Mrs. Hall (no newspaper reference; 1961 personal knowledge)
Mrs. Myrtle Hall died Saturday at 7:40 p.m., in St. Joseph's Hospital following several years of ill health. Since the beginning of her illness she had been in and
out of hospitals several times and had last entered on the day of her death. Mrs. Hall, who made her home with a sister Mrs. Lillie White, at 75 E. Elm St., had
been employed for 17 years at the Elm Street Garment Co., previous to her retirement two years ago. She was born at Roodhouse, Feb. 11, 1898, a daughter of
the late Mr. and Mrs. William Storey. Mrs. Hall had resided in Alton for 40 years. Surviving are two brothers, Harry Storey, Des Moines, Iowa and Stanley, Stuart,
Fla., two sisters, Mrs. White and Mrs. Lizzie Waters, Jerseyville, and three grandchildren. In addition to her partents and husband, she was preceded in death by
a daughter. The body is at Gent Chapel where rites will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m., by the Rev. William Robertson. Burial will be in Valhalla Memorial
Park. Visitation hours at the chapel will be from 7 p.m. today until time of the funeral.

Harry W. Antrobus, 74, of Alton was pronounced dead at 6;18 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12, 1983, fter he was discovered in a wooded area near the Northwoods
Manor Nursing Home, Alton. He was a World War II Army veteran.
An Electrician with Local 649, he retired in 1979.
Born in Jerseyville, son of William and Irene (Coats) Antrobus (m. 1894) he married Millie Moulton, and she died in 1959.
Survivors are a son, Robert Antrobus of Alton; a daughter, Barbara Bulter of East Alton; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Louis
Antrobus of East Alton and Bud Antrobus of Texas; and a sister, Lucy Clawson of Overland, Mo.
Funeral services were set for today, Thursday, at 1 p.m at Smith Funeral Home in Alton with the Rev. marvin DePenning officiating.
Burial will follow in Kane Cemetery.

I wasn't sure of where to look for your Coates you sent..Alfred? What are some dates so that I have an idea of what
census year to look? I looked at the Coats families of Green Co....not that many...and didn't see Alfred as a kid...but I
could have missed him.
I suggest that you look through Green Co , Ill page by page....to be sure. since I don't know years of birth ...even
approximate...I don't know if I'm looking in a time frame too early for him or what. I saw Wm Henry Antibus in one of the

though I would look up the unusual name -- Jalappa -- in a source I have: A List of Illinois Place Names, which is the
April/May/June, 1968, Vol. 50, No. 4, of ILLINOIS LIBRARIES. (Note: this source does not list cemeteries as a category.) I
found the following information of Page 402.
JALAPA (Greene Co.) Listed in RM (Rand McNalley) 1956, but not 1958; Post Office established 2/9/1855; (reestablished
as Pisgah;) changed to Jalapa 10/24/1857/ disbanded 4/18/1859; (reestablished as Jalapa; disbanded.) RFD Kane. Pop.
(as of 1960) 25.
JALAPPA (Greene Co.) P. O. established 7/9/1900; disbanded 11/30/1903; later Jalapa.
PISGAH (Greene Co.) Post Office established 5/3/1856; changed to Jalapa 10/24/1857.

As I read the above entry for Jalapa, I noticed the current post office for Jalapa is "KANE." In your note below, you state
you are looking in Kane. Perhaps an older map of Greene County will show where Jalapa / Jalappa is located. I suggest,
that if you do not find the cemetery on a currently available map, search for an atlas of Greene County possibly published
in the 1870's or 1880's. I live in Peoria County and a Peoria County Atlas with very detailed township maps was published
about 1873. Perhaps there is an old atlas for Greene Co., too. My best wishes for success in your search. Jane Kuck

I'm sending you what I have collected--some mine, but most is from a Handlin cousin I "met" on the internet last year.
Your names aren't there, but I do have 2 brothers (& 7 sisters) to Asa & Irene Coates who are unaccounted for, and the
birth dates correspond (Asa 1869; James Madison 1873; Irene 1876; John H. 1878).They all could very well be siblings!
It might be worth looking up probate records for my Alfred H, to see whether your guys are listed as heirs... If you do go,
I'd be GLAD to share your copying costs, etc. If Alfred turns out NOT to be your guy, then I'd pay you for all copying and
postage, if you would send the stuff you found to me!

I'm assuming you live in the US -from what I can see there seem to be many Antrobus over there. Do you know the
background to the name? Is it an American name? In the 1800's the English Antrobus were mostly in the
Lancashire/Cheshire area. As you say there may be a connection but a long way back!
You may be interested in a book called Antrobus Pedigrees by R L Antrobus. I can't tell you very much about it as it was
recommended to me but I've never seen it. It may only contain British Antrobus. I tried to track down a copy and was told
that it was printed in 1929! Needless to say it is now out of print.

I'm so glad to hear from someone looking for Antrobus or Davis family from that area. You're the first Antrobus-related
person I've heard from in that line. Here is most everything I know about Sarah Antrobus, which isn't much (my
relationship to her descendants is actually through the line of her husband, John Wesley Davis).
1830 Greene Co., IL census -- page 41 -- Household #15 (taken Nov 27, 1830) shows John age 30-40, Sarah age 20-30,
1 female 5-10 yrs old and 2 females under 5. (I have further information on two of their children).
They are living next door to brother Richard Davis & only 3 households from a Richard Antribuss age 20-30, 3 houses
more from Jacob Antribuss age 20-30. I expect those are her brothers. On the other side of Jacob Antribuss are Parker
West and William Davis (bro to John). So it looks like the whole neighborhood was infiltrated with that family group.
According to one of her descendants, Sarah Antrobus Davis died 1 Dec 1864 and is buried in Salem Cem., Ottercreek
Twp., Jersey Co., IL.. She was born about 1800 in Kentucky. Her husband John Davis was born 4 Jan 1796 in Madison
Co., KY and died 3 Dec 1877 in Jersey Co., IL. Their two youngest daughters, Susan and Hester, married men by the
surnames of Tonkinson and Williams, respectively. Anything tweak you? :-)

Sarah is supposed to have died in 1864 and John in Dec. of 1877, both in Jersey Co., IL. They had a daughter named
Hester Ann Davis.
That's absolutely all I know about Sarah, but I have quite a collection of data about this DAVIS line. I'd be very happy to
share all.

I did receive a letter from my cousin this week updating me on his findings. He is retired and so has a bit more time than I
do! Unfortunately we are still trying to find a birth record or some other record that will take us further back from James A
(poss born 1814/15). My cousin is slowly trawling through census and Parish records in the Lancashire area to find any
connections. So, I'm sorry I've nothing new to tell you on the Antrobus line. I have however made contact with a second
cousin on my Osmond line, (Antrobus was my grandmother's side and Osmond my grandfather's) which was quite
exciting. What about yourself? How far back have you managed to get? I do have the CDs for the 1881 census for

BROWN, GEORGE, agriculturist. The growth and development of the prosperous county of Greene, is largely due to that
restless energetic people known as Kentuckians; among this people George Brown was born in 1801. While a youth he
wended his way to Franklin County, Mo., where at the early age of nineteen, he was married to Miss Elizabeth Antrobus,
and the following year hearing many glowing accounts of the fertility of Illinois, he made his way thither, where he found
but few inhabitants, as but few then had the hardihood to venture to the wilds of Illinois, save a few daring spirits in search
of new scenes and incidents. Building a cabin near the present Munday estate, he prepared to battle for an existence in
Illinois, at a time when such kindred spirits as Samuel Thomas, Peter Cartwright and others were among the principal
settlers. We cannot owing to limited space, follow in detail the progress of Mr. Brown in his career in Southern Ilinois.
Many years after his marriage, about the year 1847, Mrs. Brown died, leaving to the care of her husband, ten children. Mr.
Brown survived his wife many years, passing to a home not made with hands in 1872. One thing in the life history of Mr.
B. is somewhat remarkable, living in an age when horse racing, drinking and carousing was the order of the day, he held

himself aloof from the prevalent vices of the times, and was much respected for his Christian character; and when the
gray light of morning beamed upon his pathway, beckoning him onward to a brighter and better and, he obeyed the
summons for the Great Unknown with true Christian fortitude.
Richard W. Brown, from whom this sketch is obtained, grew to manhood in Greene Co., following farming from his earliest
years. In 1862 he enlisted in the 122d Ill. Infantry under the command of Captain King. Proceeding to the front he became
engaged in many important battles as Parker's Cross Roads, Paducah, Nashville, Mobile, etc. Honorably discharged at
the close of the Rebellion, he returned to Greene County, where he was at one time the owner of 290 acres of valuable
land. January 25th, 1865, he was married to Miss Elizabeth Witt, a daughter of Franklin and Melinda Witt, of whom notice
will be found in another department of this work. Of this marriage five children were born, of whom four are living: Mary E.,
John F., Henry and Ida M.

Who would have ever thought, in a million years, that we'd be in contact with Ethel???
Have you ever seen marriage info for Gram & Will? or wedding pictures? I wonder if she received insurance $$ or
something from the VA as a widow? [They were not married when Will was discharged] I suppose she would have
had to change her name with Social Security--but maybe he died before SS began?
Can we pin down a date range when they were married? Maybe I can find someone to do a search in Alton.
There's a report card of Mom's--Roosevelt Jr. High, Alton (1934, I think), with 7 or 8 marking periods. Myrtle signed the
first one, the next 3 are blank, then Gram signed the last 3--which must have been early 1935--"Mrs. Lester Antrobus,"
clearly in Gram's handwriting.
There's a school certificate--perfect attendance or something--from Colorado from 1932. So they had to have moved back
to Alton between '32 & 34. Mom may have started school that year in alton mid-way. Myrtle could have signed in the
wrong slot.
Have you ever heard of anyone getting school records from that far back? I don't think I have.
Did you ever hear Gram talk about how they met? I'm wondering if it was a lonely hearts ad. I can't imagine how else they
would have met.

Hi, Aaron! I've been waiting with BAITED BREATH to hear from you! I can't WAIT to talk to your Grandma--yes, PLEASE

I should have known she's tough--she comes from strong stock, that's for sure!
Li'l Penny is from a different line than ours. She's a cousin on my dad's side--but she posted all my stuff when I sent it to
her.
Jan is my younger sister--her website is thehellerkids--she sent the URL to you yesterday. She's been gradually adding to
her website for a couple of years.
We have lots of questions about your grandma, that's for sure! The whole thing is an incredibe mystery for us. My mother
had a wretched childhood--an only child, who LONGED for siblings. I bet life was no bed of roses for Ethel, either.
I can't understand what happened. How could my mother NOT have known Ethel was her sister? All I know is--I've known
Ethel was Will's daughter for years. And I believe he loved her. That's what's so mysterious. I wonder whether he and
Pearl were actually married--that could be why he never clued in his family in about them? Perhaps one or both of them
was married previously and never divorced? I know I've GOT to find Will's marriage licenses and divorce judgments. Now
I even wonder whether Will & my Gram were married. I've never seen wedding pictures or a document, or even an entry
in her Bible of the date. I believe her judgment where men were concerned was a little questionable.
My mother adored--worshipped--her father. I think she would have swallowed anything he told her about Ethel, and never
questioned it. Will's last wife, Verna, (get this...) was may dad's mother. My parents were step-brother & sister! My
grandma (Verna) also adored Will. He was good-looking and must have had lots of personality, to have attracted these
lovely women the way he did!
His first wife was pip. That was Myrtle Story Hall. I believe (but have not documented) they were married around 1916,
when she was 18, and had already been married and divorced (I've never found documentation of her marriages either).
My mother was born in 1920; she was sickly and supposedly the doctor told them she wouldn't live six years. Then Myrtle
abandoned them. Will was an electrician, who traveled all over the country following jobs. Apparently my mother lived with
Will's parents the first couple of years of her life, then she was shuffled from one of Will's siblings to the next. He had
about 8 siblings who all lived around Alton. Some of them were good to her, and others weren't. She lived to see her
father, who visited from time to time. I don't know how often or for how long.
She loved living in Colorado, though. Jan & I are trying to figure out how long she lived out there with Will. Looks like it
may have been about 3 years. I have a couple of certificates from Greenley County Teachers College Extension Service,
and a report card from 1934, when she was back in Alton.
Will was in the army for about six months (I have his discharge--will mail Ethel a copy). He was given a dependency
discharge and travel pay to Pueblo Colo. I'll also send a copy of his death certificate. The copy I have is barely readable. I
may try to order another copy and ask the clerk to turn up the resolution on the copier.
I'll try to find the pictures of Will & Ethel this week and have copies made for her. Did you get a chance to root around in
Jan's website? There's a picture there of my mother and 3 other kids taken in Kremling, Colo. Judging by the sizes of the
kids, I believe one may be Ethel. My mother looks to be about 12 or 13, and the little one looks to be about 3 or 4--which
would have been about the right age difference. The little kid is looking down, though. Still, your gram may be able to
recognize herself.
Jan has several very nice picture of Will. I haven't looked at the website in the last few weeks--I know she's added to it
since I last looked. Will was a very good-looking man.
Your Grandma and I are in the same boat, kind of. There are lots of mysteries to be solved. Back to Myrtle for a minute.
Up until 2 years ago, I was not even sure of her name. My mother rarely spoke of her mother--mostly because my Gram
HATED her, and had raised my mother. My mother did not want to risk hurting my Gram's feelings. All the family trees in
our Bibles we got as kids said "unknown" where Myrtle's name should have been. ANYWAY--I located a neice of Myrtle's
a couple of years ago, and with her help and the MAGA website (can't remember what MAGA stands for--Morgan Area
Genealogy Assn, maybe?), I have put together quite a respectable family tree on her.
Hey, Aaron--I'm at work right now, and haven't done ONE THING yet this morning, except type this! I'm going to sign off
for now, make it look like I'm earning at least part of my pay, then write more this afternoon.

BTW, I'm 56, divorced, live alone in a teensy, cheerful apartment with a great view, a few miles west of Detroit. I raised 3
boys. I work in the legal department of a major healthcare sytem in Detroit. Life is good, and it keeps getting better. I have
an older brother, Bill, who lives a few miles from me and my younger sister, Jan, who lives in South Carolina. She
screams when I tell people about her, so I'll leave it at that. She'll have to fill you in herself. My family all lived in Illinois
until the War. After Will died, Verna and my mother moved to Rockford, IL, where Verna was from. Eventually Verna met
and married a man who worked for Ford Motor in Detroit and the whole family moved up here--Verna, my parents &
brother, my dad's younger brother and his wife and daughter. We've been here ever since. Jan & I were born here, but my
roots are still in Illinois.

I'll continue from my message this morning... I haven't batted a lick all day--it's hard to concentrate today!
Okay--so--Will died in 1937. My mom & Verna had grown VERY close--Verna was the first person to make her feel loved.
Shortly after Will's funeral in January, Verna moved back to Rockford and got a job at the sanitarium--she was a nurse.
My mother stayed in Alton to finish the school year, then joined Verna in Rockford. I have a 3 page letter my mother wrote
to Verna, sending her invitations to her graduation, and telling her she'd be on the bus the next day. It's a very sweet
letter.
Verna had also grown very close to Will's mother, Irene, in the short time she and Will were together. They corresponded
regularly until Grandma A. died in 1967. I met Grandma Antrobus several times. She visited Verna here in Michigan once-she must have been about 90. I have several nice pictures of Grandma & Grandpa Antrobus, which I'll get copied and
send to your Gram.
We took a couple of family trips to Alton--once when Grandpa Antrobus (Will's father) died in July, 1953. I remember it
being hotter than the devil and my little sister and I sat on a quilt in the front yard. Jan was just about a year old.
We went back to Alton in 1955, when I was 9. That time we stayed with Will's sister and her husband, Edith & Bill Cox,
who lived in East St. Louis, IL. I remember Will's youngest sister, Ruth (who just a little older than my mother and who my
mother liked a lot and corresponded with through the years) coming to visit with twin little girls who I thought belonged to
Ruth. I discovered fairly recently--when I started doing genealogy--that the girls were actually Ruth's neices--they
belonged to another of Will's sisters--Lucy Irene (gosh they got a lot of use out of THAT name, didn't they??). Ruth must
have been babysitting the day they came to visit us.
Another of Will's siblings my mother liked a lot and kept in touch with was Will's younger brother, Harry Antrobus, and his
ex-wife, Kathleen ("Kat"), and their children, Barbara and Bobby. Kat and Harry were married just long enough to have
two babies, then divorced and neither ever remarried. (That I know of, anyway. Turns out I may not know much at all...!)
Harry was an electrician like Will and worked all over the country. In his later years, he worked for a couple of years in
Flint, Michigan, just a stone's throw from Detroit. I believe he was building the Buick plant up there (which is now closed). I
have lots of snapshots of Harry and Will out west, working on some of their projects in the middle of nowhere. I'll make
copies of those too.
Harry was a quiet, intelligent man, with piercing blue eyes. He was a VERY good-looking man in his younger days. Harry
visited us anytime he was close to Michigan. He would stay with my Gram, Verna and her husband, Edward Lang (the
only grandfather I knew). I guess whenever Harry came to visit, he'd get in a snit and stay out in his garden until he was
forced inside by rain or mosquitoes. Grandpa Lang was a great guy--Verna lucked out on that one!
One time when I was about 14 or 15, Harry visited with his son, Bobby, who must have been about 20 at the time. Bobby
is listed in the phone book in Alton. I wrote him a couple of years ago, but I never got a reply. I don't think either Barbara
or Bobby were too wild about their dad. I don't know if that's because he wasn't a good father, or if the kids were just
teenagers. As a teen, you're kind of required to hate your parents...
I do keep in touch with Will's nephew, Howard Antrobus, who is also a family researcher. Howard is the son of another of
Will's younger brothers, Louis. Howard is a very gracious man--always returns my typed letter with a neatly handwritten
one. He will talk on the phone as long as you care to talk. He'd done a ton of family research back in the '70s, typed it up
page by page, and sent me a copy of it right after I contacted him the first time. IF I ever find a decent internet server, I
want to put Howard's research on a webpage. He's already given me the go-ahead. There's lots of Antrobus information
on the 'web, but very little of it is on our branch. The Antrobus family is very prolific--there are HOARDES of them in
Kentucky. They hail from southwester England--near Stonehenge. In fact, rumor has it (I would personally have to see
documentation from the British government) that Stonehenge was at one time on the Antrobus estate. I've seen that claim
more than once. I tried to email the Great Britain Historical Society (or something like that) a couple of years ago, asking
them to verify or dispel that claim. I never heard from them. I should take another stab at it...

Howard has given me lots of interesting tidbits about the Antrobuses. Eunice Howard Antrobus (wife of Isom Antrobus-Will's grandparents) came to Illinois from the east coast on an orphan train. Apparently the orphanages in the east
cleaned house every once in awhile and sent trainloads of orphans to the midwest to be adopted by farm families. I
believe Eunice was born in Virginia.
Another story Howard had was about a major power line accident in Colorado during the depression, which killed several
people. Apparently brothers Will, Harry and Louis were all working in the area, and the accident so impressed Louis
(Howard's dad), that he quit his job, went home to Illinois and never hung another wire. A movie was made in the early
'50s starring Edward G. Robinson, which was supposedly based on this accident. I emailed the Denver newspapers and
library a couple of years ago, asking whether they had any information on it. No one found anything. Just today I posted
on the Denver message site again to see if any genealogists had heard of it. We'll see... The movie was made--can't
recall the name of it, but I think it was VERY loosely based on the facts.
Well... can't think of any more Antrobus anecdotes right now. I just wanted you to have as much as possible to take to

William, worth $15, rents, white maile, age 34, married at 23 (must have been a prior marriage, or this info is incorrect),
married, born IL as were his parents, he is an electrician.
Wife, Pearl, white female, age 25, married at 24, born Canada, father born W.VA, mother born KS
Daughter Irene, 10 years born in IL. It states her mother was born in IL.
They lived at 932 1/2 W. 7th Avenue, Denver City and County.
I also did a search at the Colorado State Archives site, but with no luck. They have a bunch of military info. I also checked
for Louis and Harry, but nothing.

How far is that from Denver? My grandfather may have lived there, too. When he was discharged in 1923, he got travel
pay to Pueblo. I'm coming there to visit some day... I hear Colorado is just beautiful. I've never been further west than

My mother is the kid--Irene--she was Will's child from an earlier marriage. We had never heard anything of Pearl, except
for a couple of pictures of her which Will had sent with a bunch of others to his family in Illinois. Shortly after that census,
Will & Pearl had a daughter, Ethel Irene, who I expect to actually talk to this weekend!
Will and Irene were back in Ill by 1934, and Will died in '37. Yesterday was the first we knew about Pearl & Ethel for sure!
I have never found my mother on a census--she was born 1/26/1920--probably after the census had already been taken
for that year.
All this is soooo exciting! Are there any other Antrobuses in the Denver census? I know Will had at least 2 brothers who
worked out there with him from time to time--Harry and Louis. I just thought of something--I'm going to do another post.

It would be hard to know where to look at first. Initially I found him in the census in 1880 in New York...and I also found a
biography for the man that took him in with my ggrandfather's name in it....
I have seen newspaper articles in the small towns newspapers that have listed the children that were indentured by the
families in the area, and it gave a little information about both and of course the date they were indentured. I am only
hoping that Ogle County Newspapers have done the same thing..and since I am sure it was the early 1880's I am hoping
that it will narrow it down enough to make it an easier search. Cathy
My grandmother was also a rider on an orphan train. I haven't yet tried to find info on the trains--never knew where to
look. Newspapers in destination cities are the best bet?

was a great help. I received a copy of Asa and Ella's death certificates yesterday, which listed both his parents. Mary
Monk was listed, but I suppose there's always an outside chance the informant goofed. Thanks again for responding.
