RIVERSIDE COMMUNITY SPECIAL SCHOOL JOB DESCRIPTION Riverside is a day special school for children experiencing complex needs associated with learning difficulties, including children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders. The school works with children from Foundation Stage through to the end of Key Stage 2. An integral part of the work undertaken involves working, very much, in partnership with parents, but also with a number of outside agencies to inform, assess and support in the decision making process relating to the child’s future education and life beyond school. The key aim of the school is to enable each child to achieve his/her maximum potential while raising their self-confidence, self-esteem and working towards greater levels of independence. There is an emphasis on promoting a positive environment in which children stay safe, work towards healthy lifestyles, enjoy as they learn, feel that their contribution is valued and the whole of their well being is important. Riverside has developed a comprehensive outreach service and extended school role. Many local schools and support groups for both professionals and parents regularly receive training, resources, support and advice on many issues related to special educational needs. In addition to this, the school has a visitors’ programme which offers opportunities to work alongside the staff to see how the specialist approaches operating within in the school are used. Current Postholder: Jemma Fryer Job Title: Teacher Responsible To: The Headteacher Part 1: The post requires you to carry out the duties of a school teacher as set out in the Teacher’s Pay and Conditions Document and work within the written Aims, Values, Policies and Guidelines of the school. The salary will be within the framework of the Pay Scales for Classroom Teachers in the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions of employment document with the addition of the 1st/2nd allowance for Special Educational Needs. Part 2 – Teaching and Learning: To be responsible for the teaching of a class of children experiencing learning difficulties, some of which may be complex. This will include the day-to-day management and organisation of the class, as well as the organisation, supervision and work programmes of designated Teaching Assistants and Support Assistants, enabling them to develop in their role. In particular, you will be required to undertake the following responsibilities: 1. To promote the highest possible quality of professional and academic achievement and work as part of a whole staff team. 2. The provision of individual learning programmes for each child within the framework of the school’s schemes of work, policies, etc and to participate in joint planning and evaluation School Details amended September 2009 activities within a key stage and at a whole school level (including school performance measures). 3. To promote the use of ICT to support / enhance learning and curriculum access for the children 4. To undertake planning on a weekly or daily basis, and be adequately/appropriately prepared for the teaching day within the school’s framework of expectations. This includes a self-evaluation element linked to the planned teaching objectives which will inform the next teaching cycle. 5. To undertake joint planning activities with your Teaching Assistant and Support Assistant on a weekly basis. 6. Working in close partnership with parents, including home/school communication systems, learning and support programmes and undertaking home visiting where appropriate. 7. To develop strong links and joint working practices with other agencies, including the delivery of specialist programmes. 8. Take an interest and be involved in the general curriculum development within the school, participate in and contribute to working groups, etc, and be involved in links and liaison with other schools both in mainstream and special provision. 9. Be involved in the general life of the school, particularly in activities relating to parental involvement and partnership. 10. To be flexible in terms of timetable allocations, age groups taught, etc. These may depend on the needs of individual or groups of children, or school organisation generally. Part 3 – Curriculum Development: To co-ordinate an area of the curriculum or a subject across the whole school. This will involve working in partnership with other staff under the direction of the Leadership Team to: 1. Take a leading role in the review and development of your subject (ie policy, guidelines, scheme of work). 2. Keep up-to-date with changes, initiatives, etc relating to the subject and disseminating this information to staff. 3. Monitor the effectiveness of the implementation of the scheme of work and written guidelines for your subject within the school’s policy and guidance for this activity. 4. Collect samples of assessed work in your subject which reflect the achievements of children and progression of learning in the subject. 5. Produce and keep an up-to-date subject file which meets the school’s requirements. (See contents list for subject file.) 6. Give presentations to governors and parents on key developments/changes in the subject and keep the subject link governor informed with regard to the development of the subject within the school. 7. Acting as a budget holder for your curriculum/subject area(s). 8. Promote and facilitate the use of ICT in your subject to support/enhance children’s learning and access to the curriculum. 9. Identify subject-related targets for inclusion in the school’s Strategic Plan.
