Due to cuts in NHS funding have had to cancel third of print journals in favour of electronic, process likely to continue Duplicate book holdings Already begun rationalisation of instrument collection to reduce duplication Currently disposing of old medical equipment & other artefacts We take into account items in poor state of preservation or that have exceptional cases of multiplicity within the collection whenever we acquire new items – occasionally this leads to rationalisation. As part of overall rationalisation of social history some items with no contextual info may be disposed With TNA approval have agreed local collecting areas with Nottingham Archives & transferred records of mental health. Continue to work to ensure that most appropriate home is found for records; some lake of clarity due to split of records from General Hospital Planning to participate in UKRR and may contribute some holdings to collaborative resource Unable to confirm at time Page 36 of 51 15/02/2016 Appendix VIII – Training Activities Institution Beamish the North of England Open Air Museum Black Country Living Museum British Library, The Bronglais General Hospital, Library Services Cadbury Medical Library, Royal Orthopaedic Hospital Chelsea Physic Garden George Eliot NHS Hospital Collection Gressenhall Museum, Norfolk History of Advertising Trust Leicester Royal Infirmary History Museum London Metropolitan Archives Lothian Health Service Archive National Archives, The Old Operating Theatre & Herb Garret Park Pharmacy Trust Robinson Library Special Collections 533546099 G&T Consulting Ltd Training Activities Training in collection access, basic collection care (volunteers & interpretation staff); interpretation training provided with induction & as well as annual follow-up with seasonal staff In-house to staff/volunteers Digitisation & digital editing for oral historians; postgraduate research training; conservation Basic & advanced training in health literature searching Library induction; training on electronic resources esp. clinical databases We do INSET days for teachers; know what we need but don't have funds to do them Full training was accessed by volunteers & staff when collection was a museum Conservation/documentation done through NMAS In-house training on curatorial matters plus attendance at Society of Archivists, regional museums training, etc Medical students, nurses, ODPs LMA staff as necessary In-house conservation training Ref archive; also events Train staff to do presentation work & develop new education projects, etc Practical workshops for children & adults; training to do recall reminiscence work; dealing with visitors to museum; working in medicinal garden Environmental monitoring & control; in-house & external training Page 37 of 51 15/02/2016 Institution Science Museum Surrey History Centre Swansea University, Archives Tyne & Wear Museum University of Nottingham, Manuscripts & Special Collections Wakefield MDC Cultural Services Wellcome Library 533546099 G&T Consulting Ltd Training Activities We provide internal training for conservation, collections care and documentation and exhibition and audience development. This is due to launch Jan 2009 as an integral part of the Sickness and Health project launch. We are not currently developing anything else specifically related to the medical collections for the schools audience, as our priorities lie elsewhere for our core KS2 and KS3 audience (upper primary age and lower secondary age). However we are currently developing generic resources designed to be used anywhere: Generic resources; A series of games and activities for use on gallery in any object rich space, designed to engage audience with the collection e.g. ‘top trumps’ cards where they have to assess the significance of objects to history, compare them to modern iterations, etc We are also developing other resources at the moment: Talk Science Resources The Talk Science Team are developing resources to engage KS4 (GCSE age) students with issues of contemporary Science, these include some resources about medical applications such as sex selection of children and male pregnancy. They don’t relate directly to the collections but cover some relevant issues. Tours We are working to develop tailored tours for education audiences at KS5 (A level) and older. These will include the medical galleries Scotland & Medicine Staffordshire Arts & Museum Service 533546099 G&T Consulting Ltd Drama and other stuff There is a drama character called ‘Jones the Bones’ who talks about medicine, and also and IMAX theme day for learning audiences themed on the Human Body. Neither of these directly use the medical galleries as they are inappropriate for the target age group for these events, but they do relate to engaging the audience with issues of medicine and health. Scotland & Medicine project was very successful; Anatomy Acts book was medical book of year 2007, while partnership nominated for Gulbenkian Award, Arts & Business award & Museums & galleries Excellence Awards Partnership working with nursing history group & museum Use visual material with eg Woking Mind; triggers oral history, reminiscence therapy, etc The project to uncover medical history sources in the South Wales Coalfield Collection arose from a desire to draw attention to the potential of the Collection for research into the history of medicine and health. Welsh historiography in general has been slow to develop a history of medicine, despite the significance of the Coalfield for occupational health and the role of medical aid societies as templates for the National Health Service. Comparatively little academic work has thus far been published. The objective of this Project was to grow the potential for medical history research by making the medical records in the South Wales Coalfield Collection more accessible. In collaboration with Professor Anne Borsay of the Department of Health Science at Swansea University we were successful in obtaining a grant from the Wellcome Trust’s Research Resources in Medical History scheme. This allowed us to employ a researcher who spent a year going through our catalogues and reviewing material in the Collection for items of relevance to medical history research. She compiled a database of the items, which formed the basis for a published work, ‘Medical records for the South Wales Coalfield c1890-1948: An annotated guide to the South Wales Coalfield Collections’. A theme of Medicine and Health was added to the Coalfield Web Materials (CWM) website and catalogue records within the database were enhanced by the addition of specific index terms relating to the areas of occupational and community health. At the end of the project a successful conference was held at the University to explore these aspects of the health of the Coalfield. Papers were given on histories of the region, miners’ respiratory health, workers medical aid schemes, industrial rehabilitation, and occupational lung diseases post-1945. The project has drawn attention to unexpected sources for the history of medicine and is already beginning to bring in researchers making use of the information that has been brought to light.
