The Hunterian Museum holds extensive collections of human
and animal anatomy and pathology specimens. These include
the original Hunterian collection, dating back to the 18th
century; comparative anatomy specimens from the 19th and
20th centuries; the Odontological Collection of human and
animal dental anatomy and pathology specimens; 6,000
historical surgical instruments; a large collection of paintings
and prints, principally portraits; and collections of historic silver,
furniture, ceramics and medals associated with the College.
Hunterian Museum
at the Royal College of
Surgeons
College Museum
The College's Museum Collection contains about 3,600
specimens and objects acquired after 1799. Many specimens
were prepared or collected by the conservators of the museum,
such as Richard Owen, John Quekett, William Flower and
Arthur Keith. A few items pre-date 1799, including a set of four
anatomical tables prepared for the diarist John Evelyn in Padua
in 1646. There are a number of specimens from the collections
of significant surgeons, scientists and antiquarians, including
material acquired from Sir Hans Sloane, Astley Cooper, John
Heaviside and William Blizard. Amongst the artefacts in the
collection are wax anatomical models prepared by Joseph
Towne in the 19th century and corrosion casts made by David
Tompsett in the 1950s.The Museum continues to acquire
examples of anatomical and pathological preparations that are
of historic significance.
Surgical Instrument Collection
The first recorded donations of surgical instruments to the
College museum took place in 1816, just three years after the
opening of the museum. Today the College has an extensive
collection of about 7,000 historical surgical and dental
instruments and other items of medical equipment. About 3,200
items are on loan to the Science Museum. There are instrument
sets dating back to the 17th century, as well as a large number
of instruments from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The
collection contains instruments used, modified or donated by a
number of famous surgeons including Benjamin Brodie, William
Fergusson and William Macewen. Amongst the most important
are the instruments and scientific apparatus of Joseph Lister
(1827-1912). They include some of Lister’s prototype carbolic
sprays and samples of the catgut ligatures which he
developed, as well as his microscope and glass vessels used
in his experiments on fermentation. This is collection is not
actively being developed though appropriate material will be
acquired when offered; the Museum has an agreement with the
Science Museum and does not collect modern surgical
instruments.

Arrange more loans & put more on display; plans
for new permanent exhibition space to open 2010
Access to e-books
Continue to expand book & journal collection;
expand electronic access to journal material
More adult courses which might be cost effective
but don't have resources
Keen to make more loans from all areas of
collection
Oral history with view to incorporate in displays;
more exhibitions & temp displays using permanent
collection & recent donations; also keen to mount
exhibition of Jenner & contemporaries using
portraiture, etc
Letters held on museum's behalf at London

Oral history recordings - extracts to museum PCs
& education resources when digitised
Ideally we would like to put together more
educational/outreach material based upon our
important collections (e.g. County Asylum), but as
always limited staff time and resources limits what
we can do.

Collection Development
In 2005 the Wellcome Trust supported a project to
research the South Wales Coalfield Collection and
locate medical history material ‘hidden’ within the
wider collection. The result of the project was the
publication of Medical records for the South Wales
Coalfield c1890-1948: An annotated guide to the
South Wales Coalfield Collections edited by Anne
Borsay and Sara Knight. However, this research
and guide only covered the years up to 1948 and
we would therefore like to be able to extend this
research to the whole Collection. We would also
have liked to extend the project to do similar work
at archives and libraries in the South Wales
coalfield area. So far this has only been possible
for Swansea with a grant from the Barry Amiel and
Norman Melburn Trust. We would like to carry out
conservation work on some material and also
continue to digitise items in the Collection.
All of it!
Hearing & audiology
Increase access to public (online) & possible
educational applications
All of them!
At beginning of setting-up museum
More display areas & more storage needed
Small proportion of material requires cataloguing &
recent material requires further assessment before
cataloguing
Cataloguing BASW collection with grant from
Wellcome; Centre for History of Medicine holds
regular workshops in centre; aim to promote
collections to medical history community
Put collection online as part of general project
Digitisation programme for library holdings

Rationalisation Activities
List of duplicates will be produced
Subject to further work & approval: duplicate dispensing bottles,
duplicate/poor condition mid C20th medicines
Not stated
Bedpans, feeding cups, resuscitation equipment; possibly
duplicate publications in archive (subject to documentation)
Rationalise duplicates post merger with other Welsh trusts
Will be looked into in future
Review stored remedies; re-pack bottles, etc into safer store
LMA does not routinely collect patients' case notes & may
establish disposal programme
Due to space pressure want to weed/sample some admin papers
& case note collections
Have disposed of & will continue to dispose of print holdings not
within three core subject areas; already disposed of general
science & medicine, now moving on to specialism. Due to space
& make room for acquisition of additional specialist print &
historical collections. Carefully managed & based on local
retention/collaborative collection development agreements. Due
to cuts in NHS funding have had to cancel third of print journals in
favour of electronic, process likely to continue
Duplicate book holdings
Already begun rationalisation of instrument collection to reduce
duplication
Currently disposing of old medical equipment & other artefacts
We take into account items in poor state of preservation or that
have exceptional cases of multiplicity within the collection
whenever we acquire new items – occasionally this leads to
rationalisation.
As part of overall rationalisation of social history some items with
no contextual info may be disposed
With TNA approval have agreed local collecting areas with
Nottingham Archives & transferred records of mental health.
Continue to work to ensure that most appropriate home is found
for records; some lake of clarity due to split of records from
General Hospital
Planning to participate in UKRR and may contribute some
holdings to collaborative resource
Unable to confirm at time

MLA funded teachers' resource pack to support Citizenship curriculum

As part of the Sickness and Health website development:

Ideas for activities using the site as a resource, and information about
the site’s uses with the curriculum (see wireframes attached for an
overview of the plans). This is due to launch Jan 2009 as an integral
part of the Sickness and Health project launch.
We are not currently developing anything else specifically related to the
medical collections for the schools audience, as our priorities lie
elsewhere for our core KS2 and KS3 audience (upper primary age and
lower secondary age). However we are currently developing generic
resources designed to be used anywhere:
Generic resources;
A series of games and activities for use on gallery in any object rich
space, designed to engage audience with the collection e.g. ‘top
trumps’ cards where they have to assess the significance of objects to
history, compare them to modern iterations, etc
We are also developing other resources at the moment:
Talk Science Resources
The Talk Science Team are developing resources to engage KS4
(GCSE age) students with issues of contemporary Science, these
include some resources about medical applications such as sex
selection of children and male pregnancy. They don’t relate directly to
the collections but cover some relevant issues.
Tours
We are working to develop tailored tours for education audiences at
KS5 (A level) and older. These will include the medical galleries

Drama and other stuff
There is a drama character called ‘Jones the Bones’ who talks about
medicine, and also and IMAX theme day for learning audiences themed
on the Human Body. Neither of these directly use the medical galleries
as they are inappropriate for the target age group for these events, but
they do relate to engaging the audience with issues of medicine and
health.

increase our expertise and that of the partnership
organisation and to help facilitate additional access to our
collections and to also develop our collections in a more
targeted way.

The Living Medical Traditions gallery has successfully updated the
interpretation of the museum’s extensive non-western medicine
collections for a family audience. There is an ongoing update to the
African Medical Traditions section of the gallery.
Sickness & Health is now the major medical web project being
undertaken by the team – it is focussing on KS4 Medicine Through
time through to history of medicine undergraduates. This will make
the collections more accessible and engaging than ever.

The project to uncover medical history sources in the South Wales
Coalfield Collection arose from a desire to draw attention to the
potential of the Collection for research into the history of medicine
and health. Welsh historiography in general has been slow to
develop a history of medicine, despite the significance of the
Coalfield for occupational health and the role of medical aid
societies as templates for the National Health Service.
Comparatively little academic work has thus far been published.
The objective of this Project was to grow the potential for medical
history research by making the medical records in the South Wales
Coalfield Collection more accessible. In collaboration with Professor
Anne Borsay of the Department of Health Science at Swansea
University we were successful in obtaining a grant from the
Wellcome Trust’s Research Resources in Medical History scheme.
This allowed us to employ a researcher who spent a year going
through our catalogues and reviewing material in the Collection for
items of relevance to medical history research. She compiled a
database of the items, which formed the basis for a published work,
‘Medical records for the South Wales Coalfield c1890-1948: An
annotated guide to the South Wales Coalfield Collections’. A theme
of Medicine and Health was added to the Coalfield Web Materials
(CWM) website and catalogue records within the database were
enhanced by the addition of specific index terms relating to the
areas of occupational and community health. At the end of the
project a successful conference was held at the University to
explore these aspects of the health of the Coalfield. Papers were
given on histories of the region, miners’ respiratory health, workers
medical aid schemes, industrial rehabilitation, and occupational lung
diseases post-1945. The project has drawn attention to unexpected
sources for the history of medicine and is already beginning to bring
in researchers making use of the information that has been brought
to light.
