Each report includes overall rankings (top two teams), varsity rankings (top two senior division teams), community college rankings (using overall points), and rankings by region (using overall points). Points are from a school’s best eight tournaments. How points are calculated is explained on the last page of this report. Teams earn points even if they are not members of the NDT however only members are ranked in the final report. Updates of the NDT Rankings Approximately every two weeks and definitely by the 15th of each month, the NDT Rankings are updated. Each program director is sent an e-mail to check their points and the results are posted at: http://www.whitman.edu/offices_departments/rhetoric/ndt/ If you are a program director and have not been receiving your personal NDT sweeps e-mails, contact me at: hansonjb@whitman.edu If you discover an error in the rankings, please notify me at hansonjb@whitman.edu Sending in results I encourage you to submit results from tournaments you attend or direct. To include results from a tournament, send the following to me: 1. The preliminary results for all divisions (cums with who hit who, with what judge, speaker points, and on what side is best) 2. The elimination results for all divisions (including ballot counts, e.g. 2-1 win, 2-3 loss, etc.) 3. The NDT Rankings Report (the Rich Edwards program prints this out; if you don’t have this, prelim and elim results suffice) 4. Speaker awards (not critical but helpful) FAX RESULTS TO ME AT: 509-527-4959 EMAIL RESULTS TO ME AT: hansonjb@whitman.edu MAIL RESULTS TO ME AT: Jim Hanson; Rhetoric Department; Whitman College; Walla Walla WA 99362 Dr. Jim Hanson NDT Rankings Director Whitman College Office: 509-527-5499 Email: hansonjb@whitman.edu (email is best) Join the NDT The NDT, part of the American Forensic Association, would appreciate your membership support, even if you do not regularly participate in NDT events. The annual membership is only $30, and can be paid in two ways: 1) to the NDT Board of Trustees Treasurer, Dr. Brett O’Donnell at Liberty University, or 2) to the American Forensic Association, via executive secretary, Dr. Jim Pratt at Wisconsin-River Falls. Your institution can be invoiced easily if that is necessary to process payment. 59.0 February 2002 NDT Ranking Report Page 12 NDT Ranking Procedure I. The ranking system will report the standing of all NDT subscribing programs every six weeks, starting in November. A three-tiered system will be employed: (a) Ranking on a national basis for overall squad performance and for varsity level competition; (b) Ranking by districts; (c) Ranking of junior college programs. II. Rankings will be based on a point system according to the following items: (a) Only results from the division of those tournaments with six or more teams per division from three or more schools will count towards the ranking. If divisions are combined for preliminary rounds and the resultant division meets the minimum size requirement, then the preliminary round results will count towards the rankings. The varsity rankings will only count the best two teams in varsity division; (b) The results of a school’s two best teams at any tournament in any division (senior, open, junior, or novice) of oxford-NDT debate will count toward the overall rankings. The varsity rankings will only count the best two teams in varsity division; (c) The results of a school’s best performance at a maximum of eight tournaments will count towards the rankings; (d) The first elimination round that qualifies for points must consist of no more than half of the participants in that division of the tournament; (e) Elimination rounds of teams from the host school of a tournament will not count toward the rankings; (f) Lincoln-Douglas results or rounds in which a debater debated without a colleague or with a colleague from another school will not count toward the rankings; (g) If the elimination rounds of a tournament are interrupted by extenuating circumstances, the points remaining to be earned will be evenly distributed to the remaining participants, rounded to the nearest whole number. III. Points are allocated as follows Prelim Record Percentage Points Elim Record Points 4-0 to 8-0 4-1 to 7-1 3-1, 5-2, 6-2 3-2, 4-2, 4-3, 5-3 2-2 to 4-4 2-3, 2-4, 3-4, 3-5 1-3, 2-5, 2-6 1-4 to 1-7 0-4 to 0-8 100% 80 to 87.5% 71.4 to 75% 60 to 66% 50% 33 to 42.9% 25 to 28.6% 12.5 to 20% 0% 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 Unanimous win (3-0, 5-0, etc.) Split decision win (2-1, 3-2, 4-1, etc.) Split decision loss (1-2, 2-3, 1-4, etc.) Unanimous loss (0-3, 0-5, etc.) 6 February 2002 NDT Ranking Report 5 4 3 Page 13
