The Hackwell Line Last name: Hackwell One source from http://www.surnamedb.com/Surname/Hackwell states: This unusual and interesting name is Anglo-Saxon in origin, and can be either a locational or topographical surname. If locational, it derives from the place called "Hauxwell" in North Yorkshire, which is first recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as "Hauocheswelle". The placename means either "Hafoc's spring or well" or "the hawk's spring", derived from the Old English pre 7th Century personal name H(e)afoc, meaning "hawk", from some resemblance to the bird, or "heafoc", the hawk, with "wealla", a spring, stream or brook. As a topographical surname, the meaning is "dweller by the hawk's well or spring". The modern surname can be found as Hauxwell, Hawkswell and Hockswell, and the later forms, where the "s" has been dropped, Hackwell, Hakewell and Hockwell. The marriage of James Hackwell and Anna Harris was recorded at St. Dunstan's, Stepney, in London, on January 7th 1640, and Mary Hackswell was christened at Leake in Yorkshire on February 16th 1681. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Peter de Haukeswell, which was dated 1272, The Book of Fees for Kent, during the reign of King Edward 1, "The Hammer of the Scots", 1272 1307. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling. Another source, from http://www.houseofnames.com/hackwell-family-crest: The Hackwell name has descended through the generations from the ancient Anglo culture. Their name comes from having lived in Hawkwell, in Essex. The place-name Hawkwell first appeared in the Domesday Book as Hacuuella. Further research revealed that the name is derived from the Old English words haca, which meant “winding, wandering,” and wella, which meant “spring” or “stream.” As it is unlikely that a spring would wander, this place-name refers to a stream. Therefore, the surname Hackwell means “dweller by the winding stream.” If you go back on the Hackwell line, there are two generations that live in Ashprington, England and before that, the Hackwell line was in Haselbury Plucknett, England. Haselbury Plucknett if about 70 miles North East form Ashpington, England. I’m not sure if research will eventually get the line into Hawkwell, Exsex, England or Hauxwell, Yorkshire, England. The eulogy for Catherine Alison Hackwell - Read by Dixie Hunting: Life History of Catherine Alison Hackwell Catherine Alison Hackwell was born on March 22, 1903 at Salt Lake City, Utah to Joseph E. and Alison Catherine Stevenson Patrick. Her mother came from Scotland and her father cane from England. There were 6 children born to that union. Four boys, Jim, Joe, Bob & Jack and two girls, Carrie and Katie. Times were very hard and the family was taught many of the old Scottish and English customs and especially to be conservative. Katie loved her family and they had some wonderful experiences together. Katie told me of one time of peeling some potatoes for a meal. She peeled them pretty fast and her mother made her go back and peel every peeling because she had been so wasteful. She said it had always been a good lesson to her on wasting food. Katie attended school in Salt Lake City and graduated from high school there. She met Mathew Glen Hackwell and they were married on March 31, 1923. They had 3 children, Alison, born Feb. 7, 1925, Steve born Dec. 20, 1927 and Keith born June 29, 1929, all born in Salt Lake City, Utah. When the children were small, Glen and Katie would take the children to work with them. Glen had a sewing machine in the back of a pickup truck and they would go from house to house getting work during the depression times. They moved for a short while to Elko Nevada where they operated a hamburger stand. In 1930 they moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho and opened the Idaho Falls Bedding Co. Glen would go out from house to house and sell and rebuild mattresses. It was not easy but their business grew and because of the quality work that they did it became a success. They used to have a sign hanging in the bedding Co. It became their creed. It said "The bitterness of poor workmanship remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.” When Alison was born she had spastic cerebral palsey and Glen and Katie and the boys had complete care of her. Alison was always first in their lives and never lacked for love and devotion. For the next 63 years no one ever heard one complaint from any of them. The Lord blessed them so much, both materially and spiritually. She was not a burden to them but a blessing. The Lord gave them a 6th sense--The Power of Communication. It was in itself a miracle to see the family communicate with Alison. They knew everything she was thinking and knew all of her needs. Glen and Katie were active in the Eagles Lodge. Glen was a Sec'y but Katie did most of the book work. They used to go up above Idaho Falls in the mountains to a place called Dehlin and Glen played the Banjo in an orchestra up there. When they would vacation they would go to Island Park and camp out and also to Yellowstone Park. They finally decided to build a summer cabin at Mack's Inn. They built it themselves and got acquainted with of the old timers up there. They had a lot of good times as a family up there and built a lot of memories. Their business continued to grow in Idaho Falls so they decided to expand and so they started the Economy Mattress in Boise, Idaho. Steve & Mary moved over there to run the business and Keith & Katie and Glen stayed in Idaho Falls. On March 25, 1959 Glen had a heart attack and died suddenly leaving Katie the full care of Alison and two businesses to worry about. The boys had grown up with the business so pretty well knew the trade and Katie kept the books. Keith and Ione moved to Boise to help with the business there and Katie and Clint Grover, an old time friend and employee ran the business in Idaho Falls. Clint also help Katie with Alison when she needed him and a few years later Katie sold her beautiful home on the banks of the Snake River and moved to Boise to be near her children and grandchildren. She continued to work there until she was 76 years old when she retired. The last few years she was unable to lift Alison around anymore so they decided to hire someone to come in and live and help her with Alison. They hired Julie Soto to live in and Care for Alison until Alison died on Nov 14, 1987. Also Ann Yaeger came in and cleaned and cooked Katie and Alison’s favorite foods. After Alison died Jessie Costa was hired to take care of Katie. Katie had some special friends in Idaho Falls and Boise. Rena Morgan a 3rd cousin was one of Katie’s special friends. She used to bring Katie fresh garden vegetables and fruit and fresh cream from the farm, and Katie would likewise do nice things for her. That is what made them such special friends is when they give of themselves to each other. Another special little friend was Janel McEwan. She was just a little girl when Katie moved next door to them in Boise. Janel would come over and Katie would teach her how to cook and Alison loved her. She was like a ray of sunshine coming into their home. She came over after school and they learned to love her very much. Katie had another dear friend who came often and her name was Alberta Hardee. Katie loved animals. They had a little chiquaqu dog named Mickey. She became part of their family and she was company for Alison. Grandma Patrick came to live with Katie and she helped take care of Alison and the house. Grandma Patrick also loved animals and she had the biggest conglomeration of cats, birds, and squirrels all being fed in abundance on the patio. Katie used to get after grandma Patrick for doing this but Katie ended up doing the very same things after she retired. Katie also took care of Grandpa Hackwell. He lived with Glen and Katie and after Glen died he continued to live with Katie for several years. Most of all the things that Katie loved it was her grandchildren, and they in turn loved her very dearly. She always had something very special for each of them when they came to see her. Katie died June 17, 1989 at her home in Boise, Idaho. She is survived by her two sons Steve and Keith and a daughter-in-law Ione who looked after all of her needs. She has 6 Grandchildren, Michael, Bob and Glen Hackwell, and Kathy Guerrero, Dana Robinson, and Lisa Conlin. She has 4 great grandchildren, and 1 Brother Jack Patrick and several nieces and nephews. Katie was always a beautiful and proud lady, who loved her fellowmen, whose life was filled with Charity and Love. There is a scripture that I'd like to read, Mor. Chap. 7-46-48 which says; “Wherefore my beloved brethren, if ye have not charity, ye are nothing, for charity never faileth. Wherefore cleave unto charity, which is the greatest gift of all, for all things must fail. But charity is the Pure love of Christ, and it endureth forever; and whosoever is found possed of it at the last day, it shall be well with him." There is a story called "Such is Dying" that helps us understand about death. I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is just an object of beauty and strength and I stand and watch her until at length she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and the sky come together. Then someone at my side says: "There she is Gone." Gone where? Gone from my sight, that is all. She is just as large in mast and hull as she was when she left my side, and just as able to bear her load of living weight to the place of destination. Her diminished size is in me, not in her; and just at the moment when someone at my side says: “There she is gone", there are other eyes watching her coming and other voices ready to take up the glad shout "Here she comes" and such is dying. In closing I would like to read this little story called "The Parable for Mothers" The young mother set her foot on the path of life. "Is the way long she asked? And the guide said "Yes" and the way is hard." And you will be old before you reach the end of it. But the end will be better than the beginning. But the young mother was happy and would not believe that anything could be better than these years. So she played with her children and gathered flowers for them along the way and bathed them in clear streams and the sun shone on them and life was good and the young mother cried "Nothing will ever be lovelier than this." Then came night and storm, and the path was dark, and the children shook with fear and cold and the mother drew them close and covered them with her mantle, and the children said "Oh Mother, we are not afraid for you are near and no harm can come." And the mother said "this is better than the brightness of day for I have taught my children Courage. Today I have given them strength.” And the next day came strange clouds which darkened the earth. Clouds of war and hate and evil, and the children groped and stumbled and the mother said "Look Up. Lift your eyes to the light,” and the children looked up and saw above the clouds an everlasting glory, and it guided them and brought them beyond the darkness and that night the mother said "This is the best day of all, for I have shown my children God.” And the days went on, and the weeks and the months, and the years, and the mother grew old, and she was little and bent. But her children were tall and strong and walked with courage. And when the way was hard, they helped their mother and when the way was rough, they lifted her, for she was as light as a feather and at last they came to a hill, and beyond that hill they could see a shining road and golden gates flung wide. And mother said "I have reached the end of my journey. And now I know that the end is better than the beginning, for my children can walk alone and their children after them.” And the children said "You will always walk with us, mother, even when you have gone through the gates. And they stood and watched her as she went on alone, and the gates closed after her. And they said "We cannot see her but she is with us still.” A mother like ours is more than a memory. She is a living presence. May I say in closing, "Katie we love you." Thanks for being a living example of love, Hope and charity to all of us. God Bless You. Matthew Henry Hackwell and his wife Agnes Amelia Graham The Graham Line The Name of Graham - GRAHAM Gender: Masculine. Usage: Scottish, English. Pronounced: GRAY-əm, GRAM [key] From a Scottish surname which was originally derived from an English place name which probably meant "gravelly homestead" in Old English. The surname was first taken to Scotland in the 12th century by the Norman baron William de Graham. A famous bearer was Alexander Graham Bell (1847-1922), the Scottish-Canadian-American inventor who devised the telephone. Last name: Graham Although now widely associated with Scotland and Ireland, this distinguished surname is of Anglo-Saxon origins. It was a locational name originally from the town of Grantham in Lincolnshire, and as such recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as both Graham and Grandham. The translation is either the homestead (ham) on the gravel from the Olde English pre 7th century grand, meaning gravel, or perhaps the personal name "Granta" and hence Granta's homestead. Locational surnames usually developed when former inhabitants of a place moved to another area, and were best identified by the name of their birthplace. The surname Graham was taken to Scotland at the beginning of the 12th Century by the Norman baron William de Graham (see below), holder of the manor in Lincolnshire, from whom many if not all modern bearers are probably descended. James Graham, first marquis and fifth Earl of Montrose (1612 - 1650), fought on behalf of Charles 1st and became lieutenant- general to Charles 11 in 1648. This most notable surname has no less that forty-five entries in the "Dictionary of National Biography", and over forty coats of arms granted to families of the name. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of William de Graham, which was dated 1127, in the Foundation Charter of Holyrood Abbey, Edinburgh, during the reign of King David 1st of Scotland, 1124 - 1153. Graham History Graham's in Ireland stem from an extended family of that name who settled in White Park County Antrim in the early 1600's having been banished as Reivers (Outlaws) from Scotland where they suffered from persecution and certain death as a law had been passed that anyone by the name of Graham were to be hanged summarily. Along with the Graham's came their many "Sept's", that is families of which the mother was a Graham female. It is said that some reversed their name to Maharg to escape scrutiny. The original Graham's Fort at Glenwherry is still in existence to this day and is marked on ordance maps. It is sited on the farm ground of a present day Graham, John. These Grahams are descendants of the Graeme who commanded the armies of Fergus II in 404 AD. and until their departure from Scotland they were known as The Graham's of the Borders. On the Graham Coat of Arms are three scallop shells. These represent pilgrimages of three Graham ancestors. The pilgrimages were made by mediaeval knights to the shrine Santiago de Campostila. Around 1230-1260, pilgrimages were made by two of the senior Dalkeith branches of the Grahams and this was marked by the inclusion of the scallop shells on the Graham Coat of Arms. Shells were used to collect alms for the poor. More direct evidence has since been found of the sixth title holder of the Graham of Montrose family. Patrick Graham made two pilgrimages – 1352 and 1361. Official records show he was issued certificates of safe conduct through England. The motto "Ne Oublie", means , "Never Forget", no hinting of as bibical reference and the three pilgramages. The Graham's of Scotland were no angels, they had became outlaws, border reveirs, raiding cattle and burning castles belonging to their sworn enemies. But became worn down by the ever increasing success of the goverment forces and their local allies, they excepted they would have to move if they ever were to have a settled life again. It is no coincidence that the most prevelant christian name of this Irish Graham Clan became James , after one of six brothers, James , the others being, Josias, Alexander, Gawn, Samuel, David who set about creating a Grahamstown at beautiful Glenwherry, County Antrim, some half way between Ballymena and Larne. The significance of the name and the perpetuating of it in every generation of the family no doubt hinted that this was a branch of the famous Graham Clan of which Sir James Graham,(1612-1650) The Scotish-Irish People The Scotch-Irish trace their ancestry to Scotland, but through Northern Ireland, which also belongs to the British Empire. Northern Ireland, which is composed of six counties—Antrim, Armagh, Cavan, Down, Monaghan, and Tyrone, occupies an area of 5,452 square miles (14,121 square kilometers), or a territory somewhat larger than the state of Connecticut. Its capital and largest city is Belfast, where approximately one-fifth of the country's population of 1,594,000 resides. The Scotch-Irish descend from 200,000 Scottish Lowland Presbyterians who were encouraged by the English government to migrate to Ulster in the seventeenth century. Trying to strengthen its control of Ireland, England tried to establish a Protestant population in Ulster. Surrounded by native hostility, though, the group maintained its cultural distinction. The same economic pressures, including steadily increasing rents on their land, frequent crop failures, and the collapse of the linen trade, coupled with the belief in greater opportunity abroad, caused many Scotch-Irish to leave for the American colonies during the eighteenth century. It is estimated that nearly two million descendants of the Scotch-Irish eventually migrated to the American colonies. Note: The first known Graham of our researched line starts with Thomas Graham. He was born between 1809 and 1812 in Belfast, Antrim, Ireland. This fits to where the Scottish-Irish families lived after they were exiled from Scotland. Thomas Graham then married Jane Ellen Burris and they had 4 children. One of his children named William John Graham married Eliza Ann Chapman and they moved to Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland and had 8 children there. From here, William John and Eliza with some of their children moved to Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah sometime between the years 1880 to 1884. In Salt Lake City, they had 2 more children (their last). It is unknown if William John and Eliza Ann Graham were converted to the Mormon religion and this is why they moved to Salt Lake City.
