FUNDING CRITERIA 1. The competition is limited to senior students who are currently registered in a training program in a medical or health related field and who have completed at least one clinical placement. 2. The term of the award is 6 weeks full time over the summer period (June – August 2012) with some flexibility as to specific dates. 3. The award provides stipend support in the amount of $2,600 for the 6 week period. Stipend payments are made through the research services/finance offices of an Alberta University. 4. Successful candidates will be based at the Cross Cancer Institute, Edmonton. PROGRAM DETAILS The Sartore Multidisciplinary Summer Studentship Award supports a six week elective clinical placement during the summer 2012. The Studentship will appeal to senior students with a keen interest in supportive care, patients and families affected by cancer, and inter-professional practice. Once selected, the two successful students will be based at the Cross Cancer Institute, Edmonton but will participate in a broad range of experiences, including an introduction to community- and home-based care, multidisciplinary team practice and weekly discussion groups, within the context of the cancer journey from diagnosis to palliative care. Students will complete an exploratory investigation or research project, and at the completion of their placement, will make a presentation based on their experiences. To provide a broad introduction to the role of supportive care in Oncology, and by extension, how important supportive care is for patients and family members. 2. To provide a humane understanding of the problems encountered by patients and their families following a diagnosis of cancer. 3. To provide practice in skills of use to students in all disciplines and specialties, such as compassionate, empathetic listening and inter-professional communication. 4. To provide an understanding of and experience with multidisciplinary team practice, its advantages and challenges, and the roles and responsibilities of other team members. 5. The completion of an exploratory investigation or research project and an end-of-rotation presentation. REVIEW CRITERIA Applications for the Sartore Multidisciplinary Summer Studentship Award will be reviewed by a multidisciplinary Award Committee using the following criteria: 1. Candidate’s Performance and Experience: Your academic performance as outlined in your cover letter and letter of reference from a member of your faculty outlining your strengths and relevant experiences. 2. Candidate’s Interest: Your interest in the program and its relevance to the intent of the award as described in a one-page cover letter.
