LAPAROSCOPIC COLORECTAL SURGERY COURSE FOR THEATRE PRACTITIONERS A one day course for theatre practitioners that will raise awareness and improve understanding of laparoscopic surgery in order to support the introduction of laparoscopic colorectal surgery within the practitioners own hospital team. The course will include short presentations, practical sessions and facilitated discussion and is aimed at practitioners who are about to commence or already have some experience in laparoscopic colorectal surgery. Aims for theatre practitioners To allow the practitioner with an understanding of laparoscopic colorectal surgery in order to optimise patient care and observe best practice whilst supporting the introduction of laparoscopic colorectal surgery within their own hospital team. To improve personal anatomical knowledge in the context of the surgical steps taken during the resection of parts of the bowel (right and left colonic resections). Objectives for day 1. To understand the anatomy of the colon and reasons for resections. 2. To demonstrate how best to position the patient to optimize surgical access whilst avoiding complications related to poor positioning. 3. To orientate equipment in relation to the patient and describe the theatre environmental factors that can influence patient safety. 4. To describe and demonstrate key items of surgical equipment and function in particular; Ergonomics of electrical devices used in laparoscopic colorectal work, including harmonic scalpel. Practice loading and firing the staple guns commonly used in laparoscopic colorectal work. Observe and practice with instruments and equipment that are commonly included in laparoscopic colorectal trays. To understand their use and relevance in different situations. Develop skills in laparoscopic camera orientation and assisting. 5.
