With bachelor and masters degrees in psychology, Alan had a long career as a senior NHS manager. He was the Chief Executive of first an NHS Trust and then a Primary Care Trust (PCT) for fifteen years. The PCT (Somerset Coast, South West England) was a highly regarded organisation that won many awards and was known to be innovative, effective and forward thinking. Throughout his career, Alan has placed an emphasis on supporting colleagues and staff and this led him to develop his current coaching role and skills. He was formerly the Wessex Regional Chair of the Institute of Healthcare Management (IHM) and is still active within the IHM- supporting and developing their coaching and mentoring activities. He has just helped the IHM set up a coaching database for its members (www.ihm.org.uk). Alan was made a Companion of the IHM in 2009. As a Chief Executive, Alan experienced personally the pressures, issues and challenges that very senior managers face routinely. He and his top team made regular use of coaching to tackle specific challenges and to develop their leadership skills. He is passionate about the need for proactive leadership development and the vital role that coaching and personal support plays in this- to help managers and leaders develop their effectiveness and performance. Alan concentrates on working with clients on a 1:1 basis and aims through coaching to help them identify their top goals and use their own resources to move them forwards- to identify new solutions and actions themselves. Alan is currently coaching and supporting a range of senior managers and clinical leaders- in total nearly 150 over the past five years. One of the major strengths he brings to his coaching is his extensive understanding of the public sector and large organisations. He also has a special interest and expertise in working with organisations to set up or provide coaching support. He has completed the Institute of Leadership Management (ILM) Diploma in Leadership Mentoring and Executive Coaching (level 7) and is a member of the European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC).
