Chapter Eight Outline
The Gendered World
I.
Introduction
Although globalization is often discussed as a neutral, ungendered concept, the reality is
that globalization often affects men and women in very different ways. This chapter
begins by defining its terms, revisiting the term “globalization” and then exploring how
the term “gender” is used in academic discourses. The chapter then moves to a discussion
of the connections between gender, poverty, and development, exploring gendered
manifestations of poverty and the ways that gendered assumptions impact development
projects. Next, the chapter looks at some of the gendered labor and migration issues that
have emerged in our globalized world. This is followed by a discussion of human
security and human rights issues that are particularly pressing for women, including an
overview of some of the UN’s efforts to integrate gender analysis and gender equality
into its mission and programs. Finally, the chapter concludes with a discussion of
education and health issues that affect women, their families, and the communities in
which they reside.
