VISION of GRASP is: “Empowerment of men and women in rural areas to manage their resources in a scientific and environmentally sound manner.” GRASP’s MISSION statement to achieve the stated vision is: “To work for holistic development of the poor through community action, capacity building of grassroots level organisations, institution building, networking, policy advocacy and action oriented research.” Goals of GRASP To strengthen the participatory management of the natural resources and to regenerate the degraded lands to promote sustainable livelihoods for rural men and women. To develop regional plans for watershed development and Participatory Environmental Resources Management (PERM) and to implement them. To promote grassroots level organisations and community based organisations and to build capacity for Community Based Natural Resources Management (CBNRM) To develop strategic focus in identifying the technical and managerial needs of grassroots level organisations. To develop the strategy for research, network building and policy advocacy for broad basing the concept of community empowerment using PERM as a tool. Projects Profile At present (2006-07) GRASP is implementing four significant projects. Aquifer Water Management Pilot [Under Govt of Maharshtra’s Jalswarajya Programme. District Buldhana] The project covering 17 villages in SIndkhed Raja block, recently completed its planning phase, and is on the verge of getting into implementation phase. So far, village level groups were promoted and capacitated on overall water management concepts. Villagers have been oriented on better sanitation practices and as a result four villages received status of clean villages. Village wise participatory planning of activities focusing on drinking water and ground water recharge completed in all the villages and submitted to Z.P. for the approval. Stree-Shakti Lok Shakti Vikas Project [Under DFID’s Poorest Areas Civil Societies (PACS) Programme. Dist Aurangabad] The project is inspired by UN’s millennium development goal to reduce poverty by half till 2015. It is supported by DFID, UK and being managed in India by Development Alternatives and Price Watershouse Coopers. GRASP designed a project called Stree-Shakti Lok- Shakti Vikas for empowerment of rural community, women in particular and strengthening local resource based livelihood systems. The first phase of the project was completed during Sep 2002 – Dec 2005. Its extension would continue till Sep 2007. It is implemented in network with three other partner CSOs, namely, Pathika, Surabhi and SPEED in Aurangabad. The project has set good examples of community empowerment which resulted in reducing the communities’ dependency on external aid. The project has entered its next phase focusing on strengthening the local livelihood system. Watershed Development – WDF [Under Nabard’s Watershed Development Fund Programme. District Washim] GRASP has initiated an integrated watershed development project focussiing on livelihood security in 6 villages of Karanja Block. Participatory planning activities have been started and the implementation is beginning soon. We are looking for young men and women with graduate or post-graduate qualifications in the disciplines of Management, Agricultural/ Civil Engineering, Hydro-geology, Agriculture, Livestock, Social Work, Environmental Sciences to work on these projects. Each project is led by a senior professional from GRASP, and is backed by sound management systems. It would offer an excellent learning ground for professionals in the initial and middle of their career in rural development.
