Constitution for Serving with Honor Article 1 – Name, Purpose, and Non-Discrimination Policy Section 1 - Name: Serving with Honor Section 2 - Purpose: Serving with Honor is the Honors & Scholars service organization that provides students with opportunities to serve the community in a variety of ways. The program features assistance with locating sites at which to serve and opportunities to participate in service events, projects and discussions that are grounded in social justice issues. Serving with Honor Goals: 1. Provide honors and scholars students with exposure to the social justice issues and -isms that exist in the University district and Columbus area through service projects 2. Educate students on becoming advocates for service 3. Strengthen healthy relationships between students, the university and Columbus community 4. Fund quality, student-developed service projects. Proposals must be submitted to the Serving with Honor Steering Committee. Section 3 - Non-Discrimination Policy: Serving with Honor and its members shall not discriminate against any individual(s) for reasons of age, color, disability, gender identity or expression, national origin, race, religion, sexual orientation, or veteran status Article II – Membership; Qualifications and Categories of Membership Voting membership should be defined as limited to currently enrolled Ohio State students. Others such as faculty, alumni, professionals, etc., are encourage to become members but as non-voting associate or honorary members. Members of Serving with Honor consist of Honors and Scholars students interested in doing service and learning about social justice issues. Students can become members simply by expressing interest, becoming part of the list serve, and/or joining a committee. Article III – Organization Leadership: Titles, terms of offices, type of selection, and duties of the leaders Serving with Honor will elect a President, Vice President, and Treasurer for the organization each spring from the Serving with Honor steering committee. Leadership positions will serve one term with the possibility of being selected for another term. These leadership positions will be voted on by the acting Steering Committee. Duties of President: Attend student organization training Attend and lead the Steering Committee meetings Assist with coordination of events and activities Duties of Vice President: Attend Steering Committee meetings Assist with coordination of events and activities Duties of Treasurer: Attend student organization trainings Submit program funding requests on behalf of Serving with Honor Fill out necessary follow-up paperwork for any funding granted Assist with the management of the Serving with Honor budget Attend Steering Committee meetings Assist with coordination of events and activities Article IV – Executive Committee The Executive Committee of Serving with Honors is referred to as the Steering Committee. The Steering Committee represents the general membership of Serving with Honor. It is comprised of the leaders of Serving with Honor and the chairpersons of the event committees that are established each year. Article V – Standing Committees Serving with Honor refers to these as our Event Committees. Chairs of the event committees are members of the Steering Committee and are appointed by the organizational leadership. Article VI – Advisor The advisor of the Serving with Honor organization is Vicki Pitstick, Program Manager, University Honors & Scholars Center. She is a full-time Administrative and Professional staff member. Duties of Advisor: Assist with management of the budget Attend Steering Committee Meetings Assist with events and activities Advise students on university policy, programming, service and social issues, and leadership Article VII – Meetings of the Organization Serving with Honor holds at least one general meeting each quarter. Members are not required to attend this meeting. The Serving with Honor Steering Committee meets byweekly each quarter. Committee chairs hold committee meetings on a regular basis as needed – much of this depends on what quarter the event is occurring. Article VIII- Method of Amending the Constitution: Proposals, notice and voting requirements Proposed amendments should be in writing and shall not be acted upon until read in the general meeting in which they are proposed and should require a two-thirds majority of voting members of the entire voting membership of the organization, present or not. Article IX – Method of Dissolution of Organization In order for Serving with Honor to be dissolved, 100% of the membership must pass the dissolution and the advisor must approve this. If Serving with Honor should be dissolved, any funding that has been provided by Student Activities/Ohio Union should be returned to that University Department. All other funding from the University Honors & Scholars Center will be re-distributed to other accounts with in the University Honors & Scholars Center. Created and Adopted October 15, 2008
