think that this may well be Dominick Riester and his family, but it’s hard to prove that it is. 8

Dominick (Riester) was listed (in Louisville City directories) from 1848 to 1860, then he too must have left town. I
have a faint recollection of my father saying his father moved to Indiana. This must be the time when my father was
put in an orphanage as he was 7 or 8 when he went there and 16 or 17 when he left. My father used to talk about
the people who took him out of the orphanage, a man named Pescke with whom he lived. (Agnes Riester, in an
August 2, 1965 letter to Gladys Clark)

Riester family history
Note on a sheet of family information from Gertrude Hibbs (Gertrude Klapheke, daughter of Caroline riester
Klapheke): John Riester (6/6/1853 - 11/2/1932) had two stepmothers. John was put in an orphanage in Louisville at
age 11. Gertrude Hibbs says the orphanage was on Green Street, near St. Boniface Church.
The 1880 federal census for Kentucky has two similar listings for John Riester. In one of them John Riester, 27,
married, works in jewelry store, born in Kentucky, parents born in Prussia, and Rosa Riester, married, keeping
house, born in Kentucky, parents born in Bavaria, are enumerated on Clay Street in Louisville, Jefferson County,
Kentucky, with Rosa, 5, Nettie, 3, and Mary, 1, all of the children born in Kentucky. Also in the household are
Mary Pfalzer, 31, single, boarder, Louis Pfalzer, 28, single, boarder, Elizabeth Pfalzer, 21, single, boarder, all born
in Kentucky with parents born in Bavaria. These are presumably siblings or other relatives of Rosa Riester. Also in
the household is Jacob Hetsch, 21, single, boarder, born in Prussia, works in jewelry store.
In the 1900 Federal Census John M. Riester, 46, born June 1853 in Kentucky, parents born Germany, married at age
26, jeweler, and Rosa Riester, 46, born May 1854 in Kentucky, parents born Germany, married at age 26, 15
children of whom 9 living, are enumerated in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, with Mamie C. Riester,
daughter, 20, born June 1879, clerk, John A. Riester, son, 19, born April 1881, clerk, Carrie S. Riester, daughter, 17,
born January 1883, clerk, Katharine Riester, daughter, 15, born August 1884, Anna F. Riester, daughter, 14, born
June 1886, in school, Louis B. Riester, son, 12, born October 1887, in school, and Agnes M Riester, daughter, 6/12,
born December 1899.

“The gentleman whose life history is herewith briefly outlined has lived to good purpose and achieved a much
greater degree of success than falls to the lot of the ordinary individual. By a straightforward and commendable
course he ha made his way to a responsible position in the world, winning the esteem of his fellow citizens and
earning the reputation of an enterprising man of affairs. George Riester was born June 18, 1864, in Dubois County,
Indiana, the son of Stephen and Caroline (Ehler) Riester, both natives of Germany, born in 1814 and 1827
respectively. His father’s parents lived in Germany, but his mother’s parents immigrated to this country and settled
first in the state of Ohio, later coming to Daviess County, going to Dubois County, Indiana, where they spent their
last days. Grandfather Ehler was an extensive road contractor and builder and at one time was engaged in the
construction of a canal near Sandy Hook, this county. ...
George Riester lived on his father’s farm in his youth and received his early education in the parochial schools, also
attending the public schools. When about twenty-two years of age he went to Oakland City, in Gibson County, this
state, where he remained during a summer season, and in 1886 came to Daviess County, and engaged in the
manufacture of brick at Washington. later, he also engaged in the gravel-road contracting business and is thus now
engaged. On October 10, 1885, George Riester was married to Helen Benget, who was born on August 18, 1865, in
Dubois County, this state, a daughter of Xavier and Magdaline (Haas) Benget. ... To George and Helen (Benget)
Riester the following children have been born: Barbara, Tillie, Albert, Minnie, Hattie (deceased), Anna, Charles
(deceased), Leo, and Bernard. Mr. and Mrs. Riester are members of the Catholic church and their children have
been reared in that faith.”220

blacksmith, manufacture of wagons and buggies
Roman Catholic
In the 1880 Federal Census George Reester, 35, blacksmith, born Saxony (sic), and Margret Reester, 25, born
Indiana, are enumerated in Salem, Washington County, Indiana, with Willie, son, 5, born Indiana, both parents born
Indiana, Franky, son, 2, father born Saxony, mother born Indiana, and Trecia, daughter, 6/12, born Indiana, father
born Saxony, mother born Indiana.
Obituary:231 George P. Riester was bron January 31, 1851 at Celestine, Dubois County, Indiana, and passed away at
his home September 11, 1930 at three o’clock in the afternoon. His age was 79 years, 8 months, and 11 days. He
died surrounded by members of his family who had unceasingly tried to alleviate the pain and suffering his illness
occasioned. He was the son of George and Fredericka Oehler Riester, who immigrated from Baden, Germany to the
United States and settled in the county where George P. was born, while it was yet new and but sparsely settled. His
parents were Roman Catholics, a faith for which the deceased had profound respect. He was the last of a family of
seven. His parents, one sister, Mrs. Theresia Munkelt, one brother, Stephen Riester, and two half-brothers preceded
him in death.
While very young, George P. was cast upon his own resources and at the age of sixteen years began to follow the
trade of a blacksmith. After serving his apprenticeship, he opened a shop in Lawrence County, near Bono, where
he continued for six years. He with his estimable wife moved to Salem in the fall of 1877, where he was engaged in
the manufacture of wagons, buggies, and in a general blacksmithing business, until 1927, at which time on account
of age and ill health, he retired from active business. In October, 1876, he was married to Margaret Smith, who
preceded him in death nine years. Mr. Riester ably served as member of the Town council for a period of eight
years and in this capacity manifested sound judgment in his opinions and decisions. He had an iron determination to
see a thing through to the end. He had been a member of Salem Lodge No. 67 I.O.O.F. for a period of more than
thirty years. He was even a friend to those in need, giving generously of both time and money with never one
thought of reward. In the words of the poet, “He doth little kindnesses which most leave undone or despise; for
naught which sets one heart at ease and giveth happiness or peace, is low-esteemed in his eyes.”
He was a true father, constantly interested in the welfare of his children, whom he loved exceedingly. He leaves to
mourn his passing three sons, William S. Riester, Wichita, Kansas; Frank H. Riester, Beuchel, Ky.; John O.
Riester, Salem, Ind.; three daughters, Mrs. O. T. Davis, Hopkinsville, Ky.; Edna Riester, Madison, Ind; and Ruby E.
Riester, Salem, Ind.; and four grandchildren, Margaret and O. T. Davis, Jr. and Kathleen and George Riester.
