There is also Johann Riesterer, born 1811, no town listed. It is possible that Agatha and Johann are also children or other relatives of Dominick Riesterer. John (Johann), son of Dominick Riesterer and Theresa Barger, married Margaretta Wolf Ferry on 4 September 1883 in Celestine, Dubois County, Indiana. 1 Agatha, daughter of Dominic Riestered and Theresia Borger, married Hubert Naegele in 1855 in Celestine, Dubois County, Indiana. 2 An Agath Riester, age 18, German, arrived in New Orleans on 2 June 1847 from La Havre on the ship Tallahassee. 3 Also, an Agathe Riesterer, 26 years old, arrived in New York on 23 October 1854, from Le Havre, place of origin - Bade [sic], on the ship Wm. Any or all of them may be this Dominick Riester. Family stories say that he was married four times. The first is the 26 June 1858 marriage of Domenick Riester and Julia Stenck (or Struck).9 [A person named Julia Reister died August 1858 in Louisville.10] The second is the 18 May 1859 marriage in St. Paul’s Evangelical Church, Louisville, of a Dominik Riester and Maria Bohlen, both born in Germany.11 [A person named Maria Reister died in March 1860 in Louisville.12] The third is the 5 December 1860 marriage in St. Paul’s Evangelical Church, Louisville, of Dominick Riester and Maria Mandt (or Standt).11 In yet another record of the same 5 December 1860 marriage the bride’s name is given as Mary Monin.13 Page 1 Riester family history Louisville City Directory, 1859-60, Reister, Dominick, wheelmaker, 716 Market St. In the 1860 Federal Census Domenick Reister, 45, widowed. wheel wright, born Baden, value of real estate $500, value of personal estate $500, is enumerated in the 2nd Ward, Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, with Stephen, 17, apprentice, born Louisiana, George, 12, born Kentucky, attends school, Domenick, 10, born Kentucky, attends school, and Anthony, 6, born Kentucky. By a straightforward and commendable course he ha made his way to a responsible position in the world, winning the esteem of his fellow citizens and earning the reputation of an enterprising man of affairs. George Riester was born June 18, 1864, in Dubois County, Indiana, the son of Stephen and Caroline (Ehler) Riester, both natives of Germany, born in 1814 and 1827 respectively. His father’s parents lived in Germany, but his mother’s parents immigrated to this country and settled first in the state of Ohio, later coming to Daviess County, going to Dubois County, Indiana, where they spent their last days. Grandfather Ehler was an extensive road contractor and builder and at one time was engaged in the construction of a canal near Sandy Hook, this county. ... George Riester lived on his father’s farm in his youth and received his early education in the parochial schools, also attending the public schools. When about twenty-two years of age he went to Oakland City, in Gibson County, this state, where he remained during a summer season, and in 1886 came to Daviess County, and engaged in the manufacture of brick at Washington. later, he also engaged in the gravel-road contracting business and is thus now engaged. On October 10, 1885, George Riester was married to Helen Benget, who was born on August 18, 1865, in Dubois County, this state, a daughter of Xavier and Magdaline (Haas) Benget. ... To George and Helen (Benget) Riester the following children have been born: Barbara, Tillie, Albert, Minnie, Hattie (deceased), Anna, Charles (deceased), Leo, and Bernard. Mr. and Mrs. Riester are members of the Catholic church and their children have been reared in that faith.”220 Spouse: Birth: Father: Mother: Marriage: Helen (Lena) BENGET (OR BURKET) 18 Aug 1865, Dubois County, IN Xavier BENGET (OR BURKET) Magdaline HAAS 5 Oct 1886, Daviess Co., IN221 Page 45 Riester family history Children: Barbara F. Obituary:231 George P. Riester was bron January 31, 1851 at Celestine, Dubois County, Indiana, and passed away at his home September 11, 1930 at three o’clock in the afternoon. His age was 79 years, 8 months, and 11 days. He died surrounded by members of his family who had unceasingly tried to alleviate the pain and suffering his illness occasioned. He was the son of George and Fredericka Oehler Riester, who immigrated from Baden, Germany to the United States and settled in the county where George P. was born, while it was yet new and but sparsely settled. His parents were Roman Catholics, a faith for which the deceased had profound respect. He was the last of a family of seven. His parents, one sister, Mrs. Theresia Munkelt, one brother, Stephen Riester, and two half-brothers preceded him in death. While very young, George P. was cast upon his own resources and at the age of sixteen years began to follow the trade of a blacksmith. After serving his apprenticeship, he opened a shop in Lawrence County, near Bono, where he continued for six years. He with his estimable wife moved to Salem in the fall of 1877, where he was engaged in the manufacture of wagons, buggies, and in a general blacksmithing business, until 1927, at which time on account of age and ill health, he retired from active business. In October, 1876, he was married to Margaret Smith, who preceded him in death nine years. Mr. Riester ably served as member of the Town council for a period of eight years and in this capacity manifested sound judgment in his opinions and decisions. He had an iron determination to see a thing through to the end. He had been a member of Salem Lodge No. 67 I.O.O.F. for a period of more than thirty years. He was even a friend to those in need, giving generously of both time and money with never one thought of reward. In the words of the poet, “He doth little kindnesses which most leave undone or despise; for naught which sets one heart at ease and giveth happiness or peace, is low-esteemed in his eyes.” He was a true father, constantly interested in the welfare of his children, whom he loved exceedingly. He leaves to mourn his passing three sons, William S. Riester, Wichita, Kansas; Frank H. Riester, Beuchel, Ky.; John O. Riester, Salem, Ind.; three daughters, Mrs. O. T. Davis, Hopkinsville, Ky.; Edna Riester, Madison, Ind; and Ruby E. Riester, Salem, Ind.; and four grandchildren, Margaret and O. T. Davis, Jr. and Kathleen and George Riester. Page 50 Riester family history Funeral services were conducted from the family residence at two o’clock, Saturday, by the Rev. Earl Daniels, assisted by the Rev. N . S. Jeffrey. ... Salem Lodge No. 67 I. O. O. F. had charge of the services at the grave. Burial in Crown Hill Cemetery.” Some of the information about the descendants of George P.
