Learn about music from different historical periods. Course Objectives: To develop an understanding of basic musical terms such as melody, harmony, rhythm and form. To learn the names and sounds of different musical instruments. and recognize traits of different musical styles. Course Requirements: 1) Attendance: Each student is expected to attend all classes for the term. More than two absences will result in a lowering of your grade. Arriving more than ten minutes after the scheduled start time counts as a late arrival. Two late arrivals count as an absence. 2) Classroom involvement: We will listen to and discuss many examples of music to discover what makes one type of music different from another. Listening to music can be very personal and subjective. We all learn from each other’s opinions! 3) Exams: There will be a mid-term and a final exam which may include essay, matching and short answer questions. Musical examples will also be played. The class prior to each exam will be devoted to reviewing the material to be included in the exam. This course is participating in Outcomes Assessment and will include testing on musical elements, critical thinking and recognition of specific musical pieces. 4) Semester Project: Each student shall attend and write a review of a concert featuring a symphony orchestra. Consult the instructor for appropriate choices. 5) Reading and Listening Assignments: To be assigned in class. The text is: "Listening To Music", 4th edition by Craig Wright. Grade Breakdown: Attendance and participation: 30% Mid-term: 30% Final exam: 30% Semester project: 10% No electronic devices in class! Please speak to me if you need special accommodations.
