MATH 011 does not give University of Massachusetts Amherst credit, but it does satisfy the UMass
Amherst R1 general education math requirement, carries a course-load weight the equivalent of 3
credits, and counts towards your overall GPA. Check with your college to see if it does award credit,
such as at the Stockbridge School.
Text: Beginning Algebra by K. Elayn Martin-Gay, 5th edition, Pearson Prentice Hall, with MyMathLab®. Electronic text is
included with MyMathLab when you register for the course through CourseCompass. Although it is not needed, the text can also
be purchased separately. I would suggest at an online discount site.
MyMathLab®: MyMathLab is an online homework and course study system. It contains an online version of your textbook
with links to multimedia resources, such as video clips of lessons and step-by-step solutions of problems. There is also a
personalized study plan automatically generated from your previous work that links you to unlimited tutorial exercises for further
study, so you can practice until you have mastered the skills. You should register for MyMathLab and begin your
assignments immediately. You will need the Course ID emond#####, and the school Zip code, 01003.
Course Description: Math 011 is Beginning Algebra enhanced with a Prealgebra review of fractions, factors, decimals and
percents. Topics include real numbers, equations, inequalities, problem solving, polynomials, factoring, graphing liner equations
and inequalities, systems of equations, roots and radicals, and quadratic equations. The text is Beginning Algebra, 5th ed. By
Elayn Martin-Gay. The electronic text comes with the on-line student learning system MyMathLab. Although MATH 011 does
not give University credit, it does satisfy the R1 general education math requirement, and carries a course-load equivalent of 3
credits. It also counts towards your overall GPA
Calculators: Although not required for this course, I recommend that if you purchase a graphing calculator, the TI-82 or 83 are
sufficient. The graphing calculator can help you analyze graphs as well as perform all other mathematical operations required for
this course.
Homework: The only way to master mathematics is to practice. Weekly homework assignments open up each Monday morning
at 8:00AM, and are due the following Sunday at 11:59PM.. Due dates are listed on the homework page. You can redo your
homework assignments as many times as you want to improve your grade, until the due date and time. After that time you
will still be able to access assignments you worked on for the purpose of practicing, but you will not be able to improve your
grade on that assignment.
The Final Exam: This will be given at the end of the course. It will be cumulative. The exam will consist of 30 questions and
will be proctored in the computer lab in the Lederle Graduate Research Tower during Finals Week. You may avoid traveling to
UMass Amherst by arranging for a proctor as described below. Proctors must be arranged before the end of the Add/Drop period.
“The Mathematics and Statistics department, in accordance with the University of Massachusetts at
Amherst, continues to promote the integrity and security of its courses.
Accordingly the math department requires that all final exams for all of its online courses, must be
proctored. Students who enroll in online courses will have the option of taking their final exam on campus
on the last day of classes, during the first week of the academic semester, or with an approved proctor
during the course final exam timeframe. All outside proctors must be approved by the instructor and math
department no later than the last day of add drop for the course. It is the responsibility of the student to
secure an off campus proctor. Proctors may include, but are not necessarily limited to, an accredited
university instructor, an accredited testing center, or an approved proctoring center.” (Math Dept. Policy)
