Schools Programme Options to recycle more at schools (outside of schools recycling contract) The following links and contacts have been collected during our work with schools. This document is not intended to promote or endorse any of the organisations listed below but hopefully can provide starting points and ideas for further collections of recyclable items. The majority are through charities but there are also some cash for schools options for some items. . They can provide a wheelie bin for clothes and textiles, and as far as this knowledge is correct possibly pay up to £100 per tonne Bag It Up has started a Schools Campaign to try to involve the younger generation in our efforts to 'Recycle to Save Lives'. They will also visit to do an assembly with Air Ambulance. They also collect mobiles and printer cartridges. The Bra Appeal donated bras to charities in the UK and overseas. They will distribute them to various charities, and any useable bras that are donated will go to help homeless and under privileged women in the UK and overseas. They can also make use of any damaged bras that you have. These are recycled into quilts which are donated to homeless charities and are also used by the emergency services to keep victims or people suffering shock warm. Shoe Friends – School shoes reuse programme. Collect shoes from schools and provide a collection bin for the shoes. Also offer an intro assembly activities and info pack. Shoes are taken to developing countries. Countrywide collections available at cost for viable amounts of equipment. Accept PC’s less than 6 years old, monitors less than 10 years, laptops, keyboards, mice, power leads and spare hard drives for schools in Africa. For large collections (more than 10) can arrange collection within 80miles of Cheltenham. Schools from further afield who wish to donate could use a budget courier. Accept PCs and peripherals for use in schools in Africa. They have depots in Reading and Cheltenham. Accepts PC, monitors, laptops and peripherals manufactured after 2002. The computers are then used in schools in developing countries. Can also recycle printers for a charge (although these are not reused like the PC’s) Provides a list of local projects that provide furniture reuse schemes for the community, giving furniture to families on low incomes Based in Netley Marsh. Refurbishes craftsman’s, woodworking tools and hand-operated sewing machines and sends them to Africa. Collect donated tools and equipment. The items are refurbished, then packed and shipped to approved projects, mostly in East Africa. Take sewing machines, knitting machines, typewriters, carpentry tools, electric hand tools with attachments, masonry tools, upholstery/leather working tools, electrical plumbing tools, garden tools and vehicle maintenance. Send out tools and items to Africa, also build rainwater collectors. Some of the companies offer the option of donating part to charity. Your glasses can be left at opticians throughout the country and they will be sent to the developing world. You can donate them at any branch of Vision Express, and many independant opticians. APR can also collect on behalf of other charities. Collect and recycle milk bottle tops for the charity of your choice. There is a minimum payment amount of 500 kg but we are happy to collect (if you live in an area we collect from) or for you to deliver smaller amounts and we will keep this on file and let you know every 2 months how your total is mounting up. We pay £25 for every 500 kg on a pro rata basis. Tops must be clean. This means not only washed but free of any paper or foil inserts or labels. Our granulated tops go to make hard plastic toys for children, such as slides and other garden toys. You can donate old buttons from hidden away button boxes to Susan Symes, or to local jewellery maker, Debbie Cox. Button necklaces are proving very popular and Debbie makes a donation to Gift of Sight for each new supply of raw materials received. Accepts certain types of paint, primarily from households however it says on their website that if you’re a painter or decorator or business and have unwanted surplus paint you would rather see reused to contact them. This could also include schools.
