Description of Service
The Acute Care Team provides a twenty-four hour service for the population of
Liverpool. The team carries out psychosocial / mental health assessments on
individuals referred. The team accepts referrals from all departments within the
Accident & Emergency Department as well as from GP surgeries.
The team signposts service users onto a wide range of statutory and voluntary
services, as well as referring into the secondary mental health services such as
inpatient wards, Crisis Resolution Home Treatment Team and Community Mental
Health Teams.
Setting where work will be carried out




Most of the trainee’s work will be carried out at Stoddart House
which has the inpatient, and outpatient facilities.
There will be opportunities to work in the community, in collaboration with the
Acute care team.
The trainee will also have the opportunity to assess liaison referrals from
Aintree Hospital under Consultant supervision.
The trainee will undertake clinical assessment at Aintree and Southport and
Police Stations, as well as home, when on call.
General Overview of Training Experience and Job Role:
There will be an expectation that you attend local postgraduate teaching
programmes, as well as specific programmes that are available.


Individual supervision – weekly 1 hour by Dr. O’Brien

Meetings, including management meetings

Opportunities exist for liaison and training with the Clinical Psychologists

Regular opportunities exist to teach medical students and other clinical
observers attached to Dr.O’Brien.

Opportunities to gain knowledge of Mental Health Act (1983) and Mental
Capacity Act (2005).
Responsibilities of Trainee

To take part in Acute Care urgent assessments and reviews at Stoddart
House, in acute hospitals, in police stations, and at home, as required.
To manage in-patients under consultant supervision.
To take part in frequent in-patient reviews, liaise with CMHT, liaise with other
stakeholders and carers, and to take part in CPA, S117 and pre-discharge
planning meetings.
To prepare reports and attend MHRT under consultant supervision
To dictate discharge summaries
To advise and supervise junior staff and to advise primary care colleagues
under supervision
To maintain accurate and up to date written and electronic records
To partake in training and supervision
To partake in audit and research








