The post is for a Specialty Doctor with an interest Diabetes and will be based at the Royal
Alexandra Hospital.
The Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH) is situated in Paisley and provides acute health care
services to Renfrew District (pop 205,000). The Hospital is a 968 bed modern District
General Hospital (DGH) which opened in 1986. The RAH is one of the largest and busy
non-teaching DGH in Scotland and has an annual budget of £82 million and employs
some 2,000 staff. In addition the hospital is currently the base for provision of surgical,
orthopaedic, ophthalmology, paediatric and the majority of maternity services to the
population north of the Clyde served by the Vale of Leven Hospital.
This post is for one session and the successful applicant will join a team of four Consultant
Physicians, four Clinical Nurse Specialists, two Dieticians and a Podiatrist. The Diabetic
Unit is a progressive and forward thinking unit, with both the community and acute care
teams working out of the Diabetes centre at the RAH.
The successful applicant will be trained in relevant aspects of diabetes care, and expected
to participate in relevant CPD.
Applications are sought from suitably trained individuals who have a special interest in
diabetes. It would be beneficial to possess a post graduate qualification in diabetes,
however not essential. It is proposed that this post would support either a Wednesday
morning or Thursday afternoon clinic, where both Type 1 and 2 patients are reviewed.
The post holder will be required to maintain and develop the diabetic service and work with
colleagues to progress service delivery for patients.
All applicants must have Full GMC Registration, a licence to practice and at least 4 Years
full time Post Graduate Training, two of which must have been within a Specialty Training
programme or you will demonstrate and evidence equivalent experience and
competencies.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Specialty Doctor – Diabetes
1.
INTRODUCTION
The Emergency Care and Medical Services Directorate of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde are
responsible for managing Diabetes Service across GG&C.
Diabetes services within Clyde provide outpatient services in the Royal Alexandra Hospital, and
are supported by four Consultant Physicians, four Clinical Nurse Specialists, two Dieticians and a
Podiatrist.
This post will be based within the Royal Alexandra Hospital.
The Diabetic Unit is a progressive and forward thinking unit, with both the community and acute
care teams working out of the Diabetes centre at the RAH.
There are 5 Diabetic clinics held weekly, in addition there are weekly multidisciplinary foot clinic
and an antenatal diabetes clinic which has input from the diabetic consultant. An insulin pump
therapy service is in operation and being developed to meet government CEL on insulin pump use.
As well as this there is a transitional diabetic clinic which runs in conjunction with the local
paediatric team.
Referrals to the team are controlled via the SPOA (single point of access) system. This allows
greater control of prioritisation and control of resource. The team also has weekly MDT in which
more complex cases are discussed, and updates given about community.
The Diabetic Clinical Nurse Specialists play a pivotal role in co-ordinating an integrated service
working across both the acute and community care. Patients are encouraged to use the drop in
service which operates Monday to Friday for further advice and support. Structured educational
courses; DAFNE, and DESMOND are provided for patients and these are hosted by the Diabetes
team in the RAH and VOL.
Inpatients are managed in the general medical wards under the care of Diabetes and
Endocrinology consultant team.

GENERAL INFORMATION

The hospital provides a wide range of District General Hospital specialties with excellent support
facilities. The hospital has a first class modern radiology department and services. Pathology
services for Clyde Division are centred on this site. The current laboratory review plans to
centralise all main laboratory services in Clyde within the RAH with satellite units in other units. All
departments participate in undergraduate teaching and there is an active postgraduate educational
programme. The hospital enjoys an enviable reputation for undergraduate teaching and is highly
popular with training grades. There is a good medical library service. At the beginning of 2005
Paisley University Nursing School left the RAH campus. Proposals for the use of the vacant space
at the heart of the hospital are being sought and are likely to include the further development of
ambulatory care, day surgery, endoscopy services and improved educational.

The Diabetes Nurse Specialists have played a pivotal role in the running of the diabetes service over
recent years including:
 Education of patients, carers and healthcare professionals in all aspects of diabetes.
 Diabetes drop-in facility within the diabetes centre between 10 am and 12 midday.
 Commencement of insulin, and GLP1 receptor antagonist, as an outpatient within the Diabetes
Centre and in the community.
 Once weekly diabetic foot clinic.
 Weekly joint diabetes/obstetric clinic
 Monthly adolescent diabetes clinic (with Paediatricians)

6. TRAINING AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT
All members of the department are encouraged to develop areas of special interest
and contribute to the teaching carried out within the department. Support will be
provided to attend relevant training courses and meetings. Royal Alexandra Hospital
provides clinical teaching to medical students from Glasgow University in addition to
students completing elective attachments or special study modules.
7. OTHER FACILITIES AT ROYAL ALEXANDRA HOSPITAL
The post is non-resident.
There will be access to office facilities for dictation and paperwork purposes.
Conditions of service will be those agreed and amended from time to time by NHS

New Entrants to the NHS will normally commence on the minimum point of the

SUPERANNUATION
New entrants to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde who are aged sixteen but
under seventy five will be enrolled automatically into membership of the NHS
