Topic Sentences and Detail Sentences
What is a topic sentence?






A topic sentence identifies (and introduces) a topic.
It is the first sentence in the paragraph.
It tells what your paragraph is about.
It is general; it doesn’t give details.
It has key words like "several things," "some important things," "a number of
reasons."
It usually has nouns, not pronouns.
What is a detail sentence?





A detail sentence gives specific information.
It is usually not the first or last sentence in a paragraph.
It tells about someone or something, what someone did, what happened, where it
happened, when it happened, etc.
It is not a topic sentence.
It is not a summary sentence.

Topic 2: Homer did several things to help his family.
Topic 3: Homer learned some things about working in a mine.
