PRINCIPAL
KNOLES ELEMENTARY
Knoles Elementary is a kindergarten through fifth grade school with three to four classes per
grade level. We offer special classes such as art, music, and PE for all grade levels. Knoles
also supports the Accelerated Reading program for second through fifth grades. The RTI
(Response To Intervention) program is school wide offering support for reading and math from
remediation to enrichment. Knoles Elementary practices the Positive Behavior Support program
that acknowledges students for using good manners and showing positive character traits.
Through this program, students understand that bullying is unacceptable and appropriate
behavior is continuously celebrated.
THE POSITION
The Governing Board of the Flagstaff Unified School District Number One invites qualified
candidates to apply for the position of Elementary School Principal.
ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES
1.
Establishes and maintains an effective learning climate in the school.
2.
Leads faculty, staff, parents and the community to work collaboratively to fulfill the goals
and mission of the school.
3.
Facilitates the design and initiation of programs to meet specific needs of the school,
involving Site Council, and parents, and staff members at large.

4.
Prepares or supervises the preparation of reports, budget, records, lists, and all other
paperwork required or appropriate to the school’s administration.
5.
Works with members of the central administrative staff on school problems which may
include such issues as transportation, special services, and the like.
6.
Enforces district policies and administrative regulations.
7.
Maintains active and productive relationships with students and parents.
8.
Leads in the development and monitoring of the instructional program and supervises
the school’s teaching process.
9.
With staff, student and parental consultation, establishes guidelines for proper student
conduct.
10.
Supervises the school’s teaching process.
11.
Supervises the daily use of the school facilities for both academic and nonacademic
purposes.
12.
Supervises and evaluates the school/s extracurricular programs.
13.
Supervises and evaluates the school’s professional and support staff.
THE COMMUNITY
Flagstaff is often called “The City of Seven Wonders,” and with good reason, for within the 80
miles of this scenic mountain community are Grand Canyon National Park, Oak Creek Canyon
and Sedona, Walnut Canyon, Wupatki National Monument, Sunset Crater, Meteor Crater, and
Flagstaff’s own San Francisco Peaks. Situated at the base of the Peaks, the city stands at an
elevation of 7,000 feet. With a population of nearly 61,000, Flagstaff is the largest city and the
nucleus of Northern Arizona.
Flagstaff is home to Northern Arizona University, one of the most respected mid-sized
universities in the country. The city is one of the most cultural centers of the Southwest, offering
the Museum of Northern Arizona, the Flagstaff Symphony, and Pioneer Historical Museum.
World famous Lowell Observatory, Arizona Snowbowl Ski Resort, golf courses, a skating rink,
and dozens of recreational opportunities are located in the city.
THE SCHOOL DISTRICT
The Flagstaff Unified School District is recognized throughout the Southwest for its progressive
educational programs, modern facilities, and outstanding faculty. The district is one of the
largest in the United States in geographic area, encompassing 4,450 square miles. From its
humble beginnings in a log cabin in 1883, the district has grown to include 17 schools, offering

Kindergarten through Grade 12 instruction to approximately 11,000 students. The district offers
the cultural stimulation of a cosmopolitan environment within a small city setting.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
The 2012-2013 scheduled salary range for the district’s Elementary School Principal is $70,045
- $83,574 based on a twelve-month contract, consistent with Arizona law. The successful
candidate will be placed on this salary range based upon their attributes. A comprehensive
benefits package is also included.
