The Foundation for Individual rights in Education (FIRE)
will award $5,000 to the best essay submitted. FIRE is
sponsoring an essay-writing scholarship about how American
universities betray the purpose of a university and violate the
constitutional guarantees of free expression as depicted in two
documentaries found at thefire.org/multimedia. High school
seniors are encouraged to submit an essay which can be found
at www.thefire.org/contests. The deadline is November 5.
If you are a high school senior who is a US citizen, you can
apply for the Elks National Foundation Most Valuable
Student Scholarship 2012 for up to $60,000. Applicants will
be judged on scholarship, leadership, and financial aid. Apply
by December 2 at www.elks.org/enf/scholars.
Students interested in Emory University’s Emory Scholars
and Goizueta Scholars programs must see Mrs. Catalfamo in
the Counseling Office to request to be nominated. Our school
can nominate up to four students for the Emory Scholars and
one student for Goizueta Scholars. All nominees are required
to respond to a Scholars-specific essay prompt and submit a
letter of recommendation. All parts of the application must be
submitted by November 15. For more information, go to

To be automatically considered for academic scholarships at
Indiana University at Bloomington, students must submit
complete applications by November 1. These scholarships
(ranging from $16,000-$36,000) are renewable for four years
of study at IU by maintaining a 3.0 GPA. For more

Smith College is hosting their annual Women of Distinction
program on November 11-13, 2011. This is a program for
high school seniors that highlights the opportunities at Smith
for African American, Latina, Asian American, and Native
American students.
Smith will provide round-trip
transportation, meals, and accommodations for all participants.

New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants is
offering scholarships ranging from $6,500 to $8,500 to seniors
interested in a career in accounting. Scholarships are based on
academic standing, standardized test scores, essay, and
performance at a personal interview. Apply by December 21
at njscpa.org/scholarships.

Connections for students diagnosed with specific learning

DeVry University—North Brunswick Campus is sponsoring a
free SAT prep review on Saturday, November 19 from 9am2pm. The review session will help prepare students to take the
SAT. Math and Critical Reading sessions will be taught by
DeVry professors using official SAT review materials. Each
student will receive a SAT review booklet, free of charge.
Lunch will be provided. Space is limited to the first 40
students, so please reserve your place early by calling 973980-2724 or email: ebrenner@devry.edu.
Cablevision’s Power to Learn and MSG Varsity are
sponsoring Charity Champions, a contest that promotes
volunteerism and helps students raise money for a charity of
their choice.
